1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA single cleanmgr run can surface cleanup categories that Storage Sense did not remove during a month, but that does not prove the command always finds more. The result depends on the command’s switches and saved profile, Storage Sense’s schedule and settings, and whether “more” means an estimate or space actually recovered.
What the comparison can tell you
Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup’s command-line utility, cleanmgr, and Storage Sense as overlapping tools with different operating styles. Storage Sense is the modern automated feature; cleanmgr can be run manually or with command-line options. Microsoft does not publish a benchmark showing that one generally removes more data than the other. See Microsoft’s cleanmgr documentation and Storage Sense documentation.

So a report that one command found more “garbage” than Storage Sense cleaned all month is best understood as a result from one device and one set of settings. “Found” may mean an estimate of files eligible for cleanup; “cleaned” should mean files actually deleted and space recovered. Those are different measurements.
What the cleanmgr command actually runs
Microsoft documents cleanmgr for Windows 11. Its syntax includes options for choosing a drive, configuring and running a saved cleanup profile, using default settings, and cleaning up files left after a Windows upgrade. The exact command matters because “one command” could refer to different behaviors.

| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
/sageset:n |
Opens the settings dialog and saves selected cleanup categories under profile number n. |
/sagerun:n |
Runs the saved profile. Microsoft says it enumerates all drives; do not combine it with /d. |
/tuneup:n |
Combines settings and running for the same profile number. |
/lowdisk |
Runs with default settings when disk space is low. |
/verylowdisk |
Runs with default settings without prompts. |
/autoclean |
Automatically deletes files left behind after a Windows upgrade. |
Microsoft’s examples include cleanmgr /sageset:1 followed by cleanmgr /sagerun:1, or cleanmgr /tuneup:1. The profile determines which categories are selected, so a result cannot be interpreted from the utility’s name alone.
Categories and potential data loss
Depending on the drive, selectable categories can include temporary setup files, downloaded program files, temporary internet files, old Chkdsk files, Recycle Bin contents, temporary files, offline files, and content-index catalog files. Microsoft says cleaning the Windows installation drive exposes all the listed options; other drives have fewer. Categories may be absent or contain nothing reclaimable on a particular installation.

Some choices deserve care: deleting the Recycle Bin permanently removes items already deleted by the user. Storage Sense can also remove eligible files in Downloads when that option and its retention threshold are configured. Check the categories and retention settings rather than treating every listed item as harmless.
How Storage Sense’s monthly result depends on settings
Storage Sense can clean temporary files, manage Downloads and Recycle Bin contents according to configured thresholds, and offload qualifying cloud-backed content while leaving it available in the cloud. Its cadence can be set to run when disk space is low—the documented default—or daily, weekly, or monthly. A month of use therefore does not by itself establish how many times it ran or what it was allowed to remove.

Microsoft describes Storage Sense as an automated feature and cleanmgr as a command-line utility, not as a performance contest. For configuration details, consult Microsoft’s Storage Sense settings guidance.
How to verify which tool recovered more space
A fair comparison needs the same drive, a clear interval, and measurements of completed cleanup—not just the amounts each interface says may be removable.

- Record the setup. Note the Windows version or build, drive letter, exact
cleanmgrcommand and switches, and saved profile categories. For Storage Sense, record whether it was enabled, its cadence, and the selected categories and retention thresholds. - Capture what each tool reports. Keep the displayed categories and any estimated size before cleanup. Distinguish that estimate from confirmation that files were deleted.
- Measure free space consistently. Record free space on the same volume immediately before and after each run. Include elapsed time and note intervening updates, downloads, or other storage changes that could affect the reading.
- Describe the result narrowly. State the device, settings, date, and measured change. Do not turn a one-device result into a claim that one tool universally beats the other.
These checks are a way to make the comparison auditable; Microsoft’s documentation does not provide a universal metric for space recovered by the two features.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right cleanup approach
- Use Storage Sense when you want recurring cleanup governed by a schedule or low-space trigger and retention settings.
- Use Disk Cleanup when you want to inspect selectable categories and run a manually chosen profile or documented command-line option.
- Use both only with deliberate settings. Their functions overlap, so review what each is set to delete or offload before relying on both.
