Choose a clean install if you deliberately want a fresh start and are ready to back up your data, reinstall apps, and set Windows up again. If your goal is only to repair Windows 11, first consider its less disruptive reinstall option in Windows Update, which Microsoft says keeps your apps, files, and settings.
What “in-place upgrade” and “clean install” mean
For a Windows 11 reinstall, an in-place install means launching Setup while signed in to Windows. Setup lets you choose what to keep: personal files and apps, personal files only, or nothing. A clean install starts by booting from installation media into the Windows Recovery Environment; it removes the existing Windows installation and, on the selected drive, personal files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations. Microsoft describes a clean installation as an advanced option to start fresh. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance explains both routes.

The phrase “in-place upgrade” can also mean upgrading an existing Windows installation—such as Windows 10—to Windows 11 while retaining existing content. In that case, launching Windows 11 Setup from the current Windows installation defaults to keeping personal files and apps, though you can change that choice. Booting from the media instead installs a fresh copy. The distinction matters: this comparison focuses on reinstalling or installing Windows, not on treating every upgrade as a repair.

Clean install vs. in-place install at a glance
| Question | In-place install | Clean install |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Run Setup from within Windows. | Boot the PC from installation media into the Recovery Environment. |
| Personal files | Can be kept; Setup also offers options that remove them. | Removed from the selected drive as part of the clean-install process. |
| Apps and settings | Can remain if you choose to keep personal files and apps. “Personal files only” removes apps; “keep nothing” removes data, settings, and apps. | Removed, along with manufacturer customizations on the selected installation. |
| Best suited to | A usable Windows installation when you want to preserve your setup. | A deliberate fresh start when you can restore files and rebuild your setup. |
| Main preparation concern | Back up important data and choose the correct keep option. | Back up first, then take care to select only the intended system disk and partitions. |
Which option should you choose?
Choose an in-place install to preserve your setup
Use this route when Windows is usable enough to launch Setup and keeping applications, personal files, and settings matters. Read the keep option carefully: “personal files only” does not keep installed apps, and “keep nothing” removes user data as well as settings and apps. Back up important files even when you intend to keep them.

Choose a clean install for an intentional fresh start
Choose this route if you are prepared to remove the existing Windows installation from the selected drive, reinstall your apps, restore files, and configure Windows again. It is not a guaranteed fix for every performance, malware, or hardware problem. Microsoft advises using the clean-install steps only if you are confident making the changes.
Try Windows Update’s repair reinstall first if you want to fix Windows
If Windows 11 has update trouble or system-component problems, check Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update before wiping or reinstalling from media. Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and keeps apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while it runs. Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version cover this option.

If Windows will not boot
An in-place install requires starting Windows to launch Setup. If the PC does not boot, Microsoft lists other recovery routes, including a recovery drive and manufacturer recovery media. A manufacturer recovery image may include device-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft installation media does not. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and check your PC maker’s instructions.
Prepare before reinstalling Windows 11
- Back up important files. Microsoft lists an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage such as OneDrive as possible destinations. Do not rely on a keep option as your only copy.
- Confirm your Windows edition and license. Reinstall the edition that matches your license. Microsoft says Windows usually activates automatically after the PC reconnects to the internet; a significant hardware change can require activation troubleshooting. Confirm that your digital license is linked to your Microsoft account before relying on it.
- Check Windows 11 eligibility. Use Windows Update or the PC Health Check app to check whether the device meets requirements. Microsoft warns that booting installation media without checking eligibility first could leave a system in an unsupported state. Its Windows 11 installation guidance also recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer the upgrade before using the Installation Assistant. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance.
- For USB media, use a blank drive. Microsoft specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space for creating installation media, and warns that creating the media deletes the drive’s contents. Microsoft also describes DVD and ISO options. See Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.
- Know your boot and recovery details. If you need to boot from USB, consult the PC manufacturer for the startup key or boot-order instructions. If Windows is encrypted and you are considering Reset this PC instead, make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key.
What to watch during a clean install
- Create Windows installation media on a working PC if needed. The USB flash drive must be blank and have at least 8 GB of space; its contents will be erased during creation.
- Start the target PC from the media. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the startup key or boot order if the PC does not start from USB automatically.
- During Setup, identify the intended system disk before changing partitions. Microsoft’s clean-install instructions warn against modifying partitions on other disks. Deleting partitions on the selected disk erases its existing Windows installation and data.
- Install the Windows edition that matches the PC’s license, then restore backed-up files and reinstall applications after setup.
How Reset this PC differs
Reset this PC is a separate recovery feature, not another name for either Setup route. Its “Keep my files” option removes apps and settings while retaining personal files; “Remove everything” removes them too. If the drive is encrypted, have the BitLocker recovery key available before starting a reset. Microsoft’s Reset this PC guidance describes its choices.

Windows 10 users: account for the end of support
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That support status is separate from Windows 11 eligibility: check whether the specific PC meets Windows 11 requirements before choosing an installation route. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice provides the end-of-support details.
Work- or school-managed PCs
Recovery options can vary by Windows release, device configuration, and management status. If your PC is managed by an employer or school, check with its IT department before reinstalling or changing recovery settings.
