Choose an evaporative air cooler for hot, dry conditions when you can circulate outdoor air and welcome some added moisture. Choose a room air conditioner when humidity is high or you need more controlled cooling and moisture removal. Neither is the universal winner: the right choice depends on the room, local climate, ventilation and how the unit is sized.
How the two types of cooling work
Evaporative air cooler
An evaporative cooler uses water evaporation to cool incoming outdoor air, then circulates that air indoors. Because the process adds moisture, it is best suited to dry conditions. Room air conditioner
A room AC transfers heat from indoor air to the outdoors through a refrigerant cycle. It also removes moisture from the air. That can make it a better fit for humid weather, though an oversized unit may cool a room before it has removed enough humidity. ENERGY STAR: Room Air Conditioners

How to choose for your room
- Consider climate and ventilation. Decide whether your conditions are generally dry or humid, and whether introducing outdoor air is practical. In dry conditions, an evaporative cooler may suit the room; where moisture removal matters, lean toward a room AC.
- For an AC, measure the room and match capacity to it. Use the product’s room-area guidance and account for the room’s conditions. - Compare like with like. For room ACs in comparable categories, check ENERGY STAR certification and the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER), alongside the upfront price and your expected use and electricity rate. An efficiency label helps compare units; it does not predict a household bill by itself.
- Account for more than electricity. Consider water use, ventilation, installation and maintenance for the cooler, as well as installation and expected energy use for an AC. Local conditions and the comfort you need affect which trade-offs matter.
What room-AC efficiency figures can—and cannot—tell you
ENERGY STAR says certified room air conditioners are at least 19–36% more energy efficient than minimum federal government standards. The applicable specification and product class matter, so check the current criteria when comparing models. ENERGY STAR: Room Air Conditioners Key Product Criteria
A separate DOE/FEMP example illustrates potential room-AC lifecycle costs under defined assumptions. Its 2024 guidance uses a nine-year lifetime for room ACs without reverse cycle in a defined capacity band; the premiums are expressed in 2023 dollars. The example shows how a more efficient room AC can reduce modeled energy use and lifetime energy costs compared with its stated baseline. It does not establish what a particular household will save: actual costs depend on use and local electricity prices, and the calculation does not compare an evaporative cooler.

The cited sources support climate-based guidance and room-AC sizing and efficiency comparisons, but they do not provide a current, like-for-like total-cost comparison between evaporative coolers and room ACs. They also do not establish universal figures for cooler water use, maintenance costs or a single correct cooler size.
