Windows 11 build 29680 is an Experimental (Future Platforms) preview, not a stable Windows update. The October 2, 2026 report documents changes to File Explorer previews, Windows Share and Settings, plus several fixes—but it does not describe a Start menu change. Microsoft’s earlier Start-customisation note for build 29671 is context, not confirmation of a change in 29680.

File Explorer previews for downloaded files
When you try to preview a downloaded HTML file, File Explorer displays a “Preview anyway” button first. Other file types, including PDFs, are previewed automatically. The report also notes a fix for a bar that could appear in previews.

Other reported fixes
- Family Safety displays clearer messages when an app is blocked.
- Taskbar visuals receive small fixes for alternate taskbar positions.
- A fix addresses an issue affecting certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, including some multichannel headsets.
Does build 29680 change the Start menu?
The October 2 report does not document a Start menu change. Microsoft’s build 29671 release notes, released September 18, 2026 and updated September 25, said Start menu customisation improvements had been removed from that channel’s notes, with Microsoft looking to bring them in a future update. That earlier note does not establish that the changes are present in build 29680.

Is build 29680 a stable Windows update?
No. Build 29680 is described as an Experimental / Future Platforms preview, intended for early platform work rather than general Windows use. Microsoft says experimental features can change, be removed, or never reach users outside Windows Insider builds. Some features may also roll out gradually through Controlled Feature Rollout, so availability can vary among Insiders.
Microsoft’s guidance for Experimental builds appears in its build 29617 notes; the broader Windows Insider release notes page explains the channels. The build-specific feature list above is attributed to Pureinfotech’s report, which points to Microsoft’s notes.
