To change AutoPlay in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay. Turn AutoPlay on or off, then—when it is on—choose separate defaults for removable drives and memory cards.
Change the AutoPlay setting
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay.
- Use the AutoPlay toggle to turn the feature on or off. Microsoft’s Settings Catalog labels the overall control “Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.”
Choose what happens with drives and memory cards
With AutoPlay turned on, set the defaults for removable drives and memory cards on the AutoPlay page. These are separate category controls, so you can select an action for each type of media. The menu choices can vary by device and installed apps; check the options shown on your PC rather than expecting every system to display the same list. Microsoft’s disc-installation guidance confirms that users can choose AutoPlay defaults for these categories.

Turn off AutoPlay for USB drives
On the AutoPlay page, switch AutoPlay off to disable the feature for media and devices covered by the overall control. If you want AutoPlay to remain available for other media, leave it on and change the removable-drive default instead. The exact actions available in that menu depend on the drive and apps installed.

If a disc installer does not start
AutoPlay is not required to open an installer manually. Open the disc in File Explorer and launch its setup file. Microsoft recommends this approach when AutoPlay does not start the installation.

Keep AutoPlay separate from other Windows defaults
The AutoPlay page controls what Windows does when media or devices are connected. It is not the place to manage apps that launch at startup or the default app for a particular file type.
