Windows 11 Animations: Should You Turn Them Off on an Older PC?

Turning off Windows 11 animations is a quick, reversible way to test whether navigation feels snappier on an older PC, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost.

Turning off Windows 11 animations may make menus and other interface actions feel more immediate, but it is not a proven way to make an older PC process tasks faster. Microsoft says visual effects can use system resources, while cautioning that older computers may not see significant gains from general performance changes. Because the setting is built in and easy to reverse, try it and judge the difference on your own PC.

What the Animation effects setting changes

Windows 11’s Animation effects option controls visual transitions in the interface. Switching it off removes those animations; it does not disable a hardware feature or guarantee that apps will open, files will copy, or demanding tasks will finish faster. Microsoft Support describes the setting under Accessibility’s visual effects options.

Animations can provide feedback, preview the result of an action, show relationships between interface elements, or draw attention to a change, according to Microsoft’s Windows UX guidance. Removing them may make navigation feel snappier, but also makes the interface less animated.

How to turn animations off in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Open Visual effects.
  4. Turn Animation effects off.

The setting is reversible: return to the same page and turn Animation effects on if you prefer the transitions. Menu labels or navigation may change in later Windows releases.

Will turning animations off make an older PC faster?

It may improve perceived responsiveness: a transition that no longer plays can make an action seem more immediate. Microsoft’s UX guidance puts the distinction plainly: “While any transition has the potential for making an action appear faster, the primary purpose of these transitions is to improve the perception of performance and responsiveness.”

Microsoft also says Windows visual effects can use system resources, but its general PC performance guidance warns that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from general optimization steps. That supports trying the toggle, not expecting it to resolve an underlying hardware bottleneck.

Keep animations on or turn them off?

Choice What you may notice Best fit
Animations on Smoother transitions and visual cues about changes or relationships. You value feedback and motion, and the interface feels responsive enough.
Animations off Actions may feel more immediate because transitions are removed. You prefer less motion or want to test whether navigation feels better on your PC.

Try the change during the tasks that feel sluggish, such as moving between Settings pages, and compare how the same actions feel before and after. If it does not help, or you miss the visual cues, switch it back on.
