There is no published Apple measurement showing how much extra battery app locking uses—or whether the difference is measurable in ordinary use. Apple says a locked app requires Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode when you open it; its instructions do not say that Face ID keeps scanning while the app remains locked. The available evidence therefore does not support blaming app locking alone for meaningful ongoing battery drain, but it also cannot establish that the feature uses no extra power.
What app locking does—and what Apple has not measured
Apple describes app locking as an authentication check when someone tries to open a locked app: “The app requires Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to open.” Its Personal Safety User Guide does not describe repeated Face ID scans simply because an app is locked.

Apple has not published an on/off battery comparison for app locking, so there is no reliable percentage to quote. Apple’s Face ID privacy information explains that Face ID can authenticate within apps, but does not quantify the feature’s battery use. The evidence supports neither a claim of substantial ongoing drain nor a promise of zero power cost.

If battery life has changed, inspect activity on your iPhone rather than turning off a privacy feature based on an unmeasured claim. Apple recommends reviewing app and system activity in Settings; its battery guidance notes that background activity and low signal can affect battery life.

- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the usage and activity for the time period when you noticed the drain. Check both app and system activity, and look for notable background activity.
- Consider what changed during that period, including how much you used the phone, signal conditions, and screen brightness. Apple says battery life depends on factors such as device use and which apps you use.
- Review the battery health information available in Settings. The exact menu can vary across iPhone generations.
Apple’s current battery guidance, published July 20, 2026, explains the activity views and battery-health information in If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly. Battery activity can help identify where to investigate, but it does not itself measure the incremental power used by app locking.
Does app locking sync to your other devices?
No. Apple’s guide says an app’s locked status is specific to the device and does not sync through iCloud. Locking an app on one iPhone therefore does not automatically lock it on another device.
