If AC-3 audio stopped playing in Windows 11, a missing decoder is one possibility—but not the only one. Windows 11 version 24H2 no longer includes AC-3 by default, yet some PCs still have it because their manufacturer installed it or they were upgraded from an earlier Windows version. First determine whether the problem affects one AC-3 track or all sound, then follow the matching fix.
What is AC-3, and why might it stop working?
AC-3, also known as Dolby Digital, is an audio codec that can carry multichannel sound. A media player needs a compatible decoder to read an AC-3 track. Microsoft says AC-3 was included in Windows versions before Windows 11 version 24H2; beginning with 24H2, it is no longer included with Windows by default. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance also notes that device manufacturers may preinstall the codec and that upgrading from an earlier Windows version retains it.

That is why two computers on 24H2 may behave differently. A clean installation on one PC may not have the codec, while another PC may have an OEM-installed copy or retain it from an upgrade. The release number alone does not establish whether AC-3 is present.

- Try another known-good media file. If other files play normally but one file or one audio track does not, focus on that file’s audio format and your player’s support for it.
- Try a different player. If the same AC-3 track plays elsewhere, the original player’s codec support or configuration is a more likely cause than Windows-wide silence.
- Check the track’s codec information. Microsoft recommends checking file properties and codec details for files that will not play. A filename extension or container—such as MP4 or MKV—does not by itself identify the audio codec inside.
- Check whether all sound is affected. If music, system sounds, and other media are also silent, start with the Windows output device, volume, connection, and driver rather than assuming AC-3 is missing.
Microsoft treats codec errors and general sound problems as separate troubleshooting areas. A silent AC-3 track in an otherwise working system points toward decoding or player compatibility; silence across applications calls for output-device diagnosis. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers the latter.

Match the fix to your Windows installation and symptom
| What you find | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only a particular file or AC-3 track fails | The file may use an unsupported codec, or the player may not decode AC-3. | Confirm the track codec and test a player that supports it. |
| Windows 11 version 24H2 with a clean installation | AC-3 is not included with Windows by default in this release. | Check whether the PC maker supplies an AC-3 codec, or use a compatible player or codec option. |
| Windows 11 version 24H2 upgraded from an earlier Windows version | The upgrade may have retained AC-3. | If AC-3 playback works, the codec may already be present; if it does not, check the player and track as well as the installation history. |
| A PC from a manufacturer that preinstalls media components | An OEM-installed AC-3 codec may explain playback on 24H2. | Check the PC maker’s bundled software or support information before adding another codec. |
| Windows 10/11 N edition | The N edition has a separate media-feature path. | Check Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions for Windows 10/11 N. |
| All media and apps are silent | This is more consistent with an output, settings, connection, or driver problem than an AC-3-only decoding issue. | Follow Windows sound troubleshooting for the selected output device and driver. |
What to do on Windows 11 24H2
Do not assume that every 24H2 PC lacks AC-3, and do not assume that a successful upgrade proves the codec is included in a fresh installation. Check the computer’s upgrade history and manufacturer software, then verify the specific file and player. If the manufacturer does not provide AC-3 and the player cannot decode the track, choose a player or codec option that explicitly supports the file’s audio format.
What Windows N users should check
For Windows 10/11 N, Microsoft documents the Media Feature Pack as a way to add media technologies, including AC-3 audio codec support. This guidance is specific to N editions; it is not a universal AC-3 download for every Windows 11 24H2 PC. See Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions and follow the applicable Windows edition guidance.

Should you install a codec pack?
Not as a first step. Microsoft says additional codecs may be required for formats a player does not support, but its codec FAQ warns that codec packs can cause compatibility problems, serious playback issues, or system corruption. Microsoft’s codec FAQ explains codec identification and compatibility. Before installing a third-party pack, confirm the track really uses AC-3, check whether another player supports it, and look for an official codec from the PC manufacturer. Avoid treating a generic pack as a guaranteed fix.
When output settings and drivers are the right fix
If all audio is silent—not just AC-3—check that Windows is using the intended output device, that the volume is not muted, and that speakers or headphones are connected correctly. Then use Windows’ audio troubleshooter and review the audio device driver. These checks can resolve general sound failures, but they do not install an absent AC-3 decoder.
