Disabling 8.3 short-name creation may reduce a small amount of work when NTFS creates files, but Microsoft publishes no Windows 11 consumer benchmark showing how much it helps. The change is most relevant to workloads that create many files; it is not a guaranteed or necessarily noticeable speed boost for everyday desktop use.
What 8.3 file names do
An 8.3 name is a short alias associated with a longer file name, retained for compatibility with software that expects the older naming format. Windows 11 includes the fsutil 8dot3name command for inspecting and changing this behavior. Microsoft documents the command for Windows 11 and describes controls for FAT- and NTFS-formatted volumes. Why disabling creation might help—and what is unknown
On NTFS, when short-name creation is enabled, the file system creates an additional 8.3 entry and looks up associated short names as it creates files in a directory. That is extra work, so disabling creation could matter in workloads that create large numbers of files. Microsoft’s fsutil behavior documentation
Microsoft does not quantify the time saved, provide a Windows 11 consumer benchmark, or establish that typical users will notice a difference. Treat a performance gain as possible, not promised; the documentation supports the mechanism, not a specific improvement.

How to assess your own workload
If you want to test whether the change matters on your PC, compare the same file-creation task before and after changing the setting. Keep the files, storage device, and background conditions as consistent as possible, and repeat the test. This gives you a result for that workload and machine; it does not establish a general Windows 11 speedup.
Disabling new names is different from removing existing ones
| Action | Effect | Compatibility consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Disable creation | Stops creation of new 8.3 names according to the selected system or volume setting. | Existing short names are not thereby stripped. |
| Remove existing names | Strips aliases that already exist. | Applications or uninstallers may fail if registry references to those names remain. |
Microsoft warns that permanently removing 8.3 names without updating registry keys that refer to them may cause unexpected application failures, including inability to uninstall an application. Microsoft’s fsutil 8dot3name reference Disabling future creation is the narrower change; stripping existing aliases is a separate, riskier operation.

Do not strip existing aliases as a routine speed tweak
If you are considering removal, first use the documented fsutil 8dot3name scan operation to identify registry references that may be affected. The command also documents a strip test mode. Back up the relevant directory or volume before proceeding, and do not treat forced stripping with /f as a routine performance step. The compatibility warning matters because stale registry references can leave applications or uninstallers unable to locate files.
8.3 names are not the Windows long-path setting
Turning off short-name creation does not enable long paths. Microsoft documents long-path support separately: for supported Win32 functions, it requires the LongPathsEnabled registry setting and an application manifest declaring longPathAware. Applications must opt in; changing the setting does not automatically remove path-length limits for every program. Microsoft’s Maximum Path Length Limitation documentation
