If your iPhone isn’t appearing in iTunes, Finder, or Apple Devices, first use the Apple app that matches your computer, unlock the phone, and approve any Trust or accessory-access prompt. Then check the cable, USB port, and software—in that order. Don’t start with a restore: it can erase your data and is not a first-line fix for a connection problem.
Open the right app for your computer
The app depends on your computer and software version; there is no special iTunes-only repair setting. Apple’s current Windows guidance uses Apple Devices, though iTunes remains applicable to some supported Windows setups. On a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, use Finder. Apple’s device-location guidance also covers earlier Mac and Windows configurations. Apple’s guide to locating an iPhone on a computer explains where to look.

- Windows: Open Apple Devices, or iTunes if that is the supported app on your setup.
- Mac with macOS Catalina or later: Open Finder and look for the iPhone in the sidebar. If the sidebar is hidden, choose View in Finder and show the sidebar.

- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable and unlock the phone.
- If the iPhone asks “Trust This Computer?”, tap Trust.
- If a Mac asks whether to allow the accessory to connect, click Allow.
If you previously chose “Don’t Trust,” or the Trust prompt does not appear, Apple advises resetting Location & Privacy settings on the iPhone, then reconnecting and responding to the prompt. Follow Apple’s computer recognition troubleshooting steps for that reset and the relevant device instructions.

Check the cable, USB port, and iPhone port
Use a cable that transfers data
A cable may charge the iPhone without connecting it to the computer for data. Apple’s guidance is direct: “The cable must support both data and charging.” Try another cable you know supports both, with connectors that fit the iPhone and computer. If the cable and computer use different port types, use a compatible adapter. See Apple’s instructions for connecting an iPhone and computer with a cable.
Try another USB port or computer
Connect directly to a different USB port, then try another computer if one is available. If the iPhone appears on a second computer, that helps narrow the problem to the original computer, its port, or its software; if it does not, the cable or phone may be involved. For update or restore operations specifically, Apple cautions against using a keyboard USB port because it may not supply enough power; that warning is about those operations, not a universal rule for ordinary recognition.

Inspect the iPhone’s charging port if there is no connection response
If the iPhone does not chime or vibrate when connected, disconnect it and check the charging port for debris. Do not insert metal tools or liquids into the port. Apple’s recognition troubleshooting guide includes this connection check.

- Install current macOS or Windows updates and update the iPhone to current iOS.
- On Windows, update Apple Devices or iTunes, whichever applies to your installation.
- If the connection still fails, consider software conflicts. Apple’s Mac guidance specifically calls out VPN and third-party security software as possible factors.

When recovery mode or service makes sense
Recovery mode is intended for situations such as an iPhone already showing a recovery screen, displaying “Connect to computer,” or having an update or startup problem. It is not the first step for a phone that works normally but fails to appear on the computer.
A factory restore erases information and settings. Do not use it as an initial recognition fix. If an update or recovery problem genuinely calls for a restore, back up first where possible and follow Apple’s device-specific instructions: update or restore troubleshooting and restore an iPhone to factory settings using a computer. If the iPhone remains unrecognized after the connection, authorization, and software checks above, Apple says service may be needed.
