Windows 11 26H2: What to Check and Change After Upgrading

Check Windows Update and your backup after installing Windows 11 26H2, then review privacy, accessibility, and personalization settings according to your needs.

After installing Windows 11 version 26H2, check Windows Update, verify that your backup still completes, and review privacy, accessibility, and personalization settings to suit your needs. Microsoft does not prescribe one set of switches that every user should change.

First, confirm what the upgrade changed

Windows 11 26H2 became generally available on September 29, 2026. Its rollout is phased for eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices, so not every compatible PC will necessarily see the offer at once. Microsoft says eligible devices can check Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available to seek updates earlier; eligibility and compatibility safeguards still apply. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 2026 Update announcement.

For eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices, 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package. Microsoft says the download is small and installation typically needs a restart, but the time required can vary by PC. That does not mean every 26H2 installation follows the same path.

Check for updates before changing preferences

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install applicable updates offered for your PC and restart if Windows asks you to.
  4. If you encounter a problem, consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H2 known-issues page for its current status; issue details and fixes can change.

As of the issue information reported in early October 2026, Microsoft listed a confirmed problem affecting some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) decoding after updates released on or after September 22, 2026. Symptoms could include an app failing to launch or closing unexpectedly, sometimes around audio features. Microsoft noted that modern apps often use their own decoders and may not be affected; the listed resolution was a future Windows update. Check the live page for the latest status rather than assuming the issue still applies—or is resolved—on your system.

Make sure your backup still works

If you use File History, check that its destination is available and that a recent backup completes. Microsoft documents File History as backing up files to either an external drive or a network location. The update does not require you to buy hardware just to use 26H2. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H2 update history for update-related information.

Destination Practical consideration
External drive Useful if you want a locally connected destination; it is unavailable while disconnected.
Network location Useful if it fits your existing network and backup workflow; it depends on that location being reachable.

Those are practical trade-offs, not a Microsoft ranking of the two options. Microsoft’s update history says a File History issue affecting some systems after a September 2026 update was resolved in updates released on and after September 22, 2026. If your backup does not complete, install applicable updates and check that the destination is connected or reachable before relying on it.

Review privacy, accessibility, and personalization settings by need

A feature update is a reasonable time to inspect settings that shape how Windows works for you, but Microsoft’s 26H2 materials do not identify a particular privacy or personalization switch that everyone must change. Review only the areas relevant to your preferences and requirements; do not treat an optional preference as a security fix.

  • Privacy: Revisit the permissions and choices you care about, and change them according to how you use the PC.
  • Accessibility: Confirm that the features you rely on remain configured the way you need.
  • Personalization: Adjust appearance and other preferences if the update left them different from what you want.

Know which defaults apply to commercial devices

Microsoft says 26H2 enables some previously controlled features by default on commercial devices, including Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and File Explorer improvements. Existing administrator-configured policies for settings backup continue to be honored. These commercial-device changes are not a description of every home PC; check your organization’s policy if the computer is managed. Details appear in Microsoft’s What’s new in Windows 11, version 26H2.

Check how long your edition is supported

Microsoft lists the Windows 11 26H2 support duration as 24 months for Home and Pro editions, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. These are lifecycle durations, not calendar end dates; the exact edition installed determines which duration applies. Microsoft’s 26H2 announcement covers the release lifecycle.
