Windows 11 26H2 vs. 25H2: What Changed and Should You Upgrade?

Windows 11 26H2 is available through a phased rollout. Here’s what changed from 25H2, how support dates compare, and who should upgrade now.

Windows 11 26H2 became generally available on September 29, 2026. For an eligible PC already running 25H2, the move is delivered as a small enablement package rather than a full operating-system upgrade, and Microsoft says one restart completes it. The clearest reason to upgrade is the longer support window: Home and Pro-family editions receive updates through October 10, 2028 on 26H2, compared with October 12, 2027 on 25H2. New visible features may be limited because many changes arrive through monthly updates before an annual release is activated.

What changed in Windows 11 26H2?

Microsoft describes 26H2 as an annual feature update built on the same servicing foundation as 25H2 and 24H2. Many improvements are delivered through monthly servicing updates, so a fully updated 25H2 PC may already have some capabilities associated with 26H2. Moving to 26H2 activates selected capabilities and starts a new release support lifecycle; it does not necessarily mean that every user will see a large set of new features immediately. Microsoft’s 26H2 IT-pro documentation describes the transition for eligible devices as a small enablement package.

Features and settings

For commercial devices, Microsoft says Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions, and several File Explorer enhancements are enabled by default in 26H2. Those capabilities had previously been subject to temporary commercial controls. The release documentation also lists capabilities added since 25H2, including built-in Sysmon and administrator protection. Administrator protection is off by default and can be enabled through management policy. What appears on a particular PC depends on its edition, policy configuration, and installed updates. See Microsoft’s 26H2 feature details.

25H2 followed a similar pattern: it included capabilities and fixes delivered through earlier 24H2 cumulative updates, and eligible 24H2 devices could move to it through an enablement package when prerequisite updates were installed. This means the comparison is partly about release identity and support dates, not a clean before-and-after feature boundary. Microsoft’s 25H2 documentation explains that release’s features.

How long are 25H2 and 26H2 supported?

The dates below are Microsoft’s listed release end dates for receiving updates. They are not a guarantee that every device will be offered the new version on the same day; rollout and servicing depend on edition and management circumstances. Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information describes the annual servicing cadence as 24 months for Home and Pro-family editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.

Edition group Windows 11 25H2 Windows 11 26H2
Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations October 12, 2027 October 10, 2028
Enterprise and Education October 10, 2028 October 9, 2029

For Home and Pro-family users, 26H2 extends the listed support end date by nearly a year. Enterprise and Education also receive a later end date on 26H2. For the 25H2 enterprise IT-pro servicing description, Microsoft specifies 24 months for Pro and 36 months for Enterprise; consult the release information for the edition-specific lifecycle that applies to your device. Microsoft’s Home and Pro lifecycle page provides additional lifecycle information.

Is Windows 11 26H2 available for your PC?

Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026, but is distributing the update in phases. Eligible devices running 25H2 or 24H2 can receive the offer through Windows Update. Availability is not simultaneous across all PCs, and the offer status on an individual device is the practical guide. To make newly available updates eligible to appear promptly, the relevant setting is Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Check that Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is enabled if you want the device to receive eligible updates as soon as offered.
  3. Select Check for updates and follow Windows Update if it offers Windows 11, version 26H2. Microsoft says the enablement-package installation downloads and installs, with one restart completing the move.

If Windows Update does not offer 26H2, do not assume the PC is broken or force the upgrade: the phased rollout may not yet include that device. Check Microsoft’s current 26H2 release-health page for availability information and any deployment holds.

Known issues to check before upgrading

As of September 29, 2026, Microsoft’s 26H2 release-health page listed three mitigated issues. Mitigation status can change, so people with these workflows should check the live page before a broad rollout:

  • Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices could fail to start or produce no sound.
  • Some domain devices protected by Credential Guard could encounter secure-trust or sign-in problems.
  • Some virtual desktop environments could show a black screen or a desktop-loading problem after sign-in.

For an organization, also validate applications, drivers, policies, and deployment processes on representative devices before moving a broad user group. Microsoft’s release documentation does not establish that 26H2 is faster than 25H2 or provide an independent performance comparison.

Should you upgrade from 25H2?

Personal PCs

If your eligible personal PC is working normally, installing 26H2 when Windows Update offers it is a reasonable choice, particularly if you want the later support end date and a current release. Since many capabilities may already have arrived in monthly updates, do not upgrade expecting every listed feature to appear as a new user-facing change.

Managed work or school PCs

Follow your organization’s deployment and validation process rather than installing on the strength of general availability alone. The relevant decision factors are the edition-specific support window, application and driver compatibility, policy requirements, and whether release-health issues affect your environment.

Devices used for specialist audio, sign-in, or virtual desktops

Check the current mitigations and test the exact device or workflow before a wide deployment if you rely on USB Audio Class 1.0 audio hardware, Credential Guard-protected domain sign-in, or virtual desktop sessions.
