If the Windows 11 26H2 update is not showing, it may be because Microsoft is rolling it out gradually, your PC does not meet the update prerequisites, or a compatibility safeguard is delaying the offer. Windows 11, version 26H2 reached general availability on September 29, 2026, but Microsoft said availability would expand over the following months. Its absence alone does not mean Windows Update is broken.
Why Windows 11 26H2 may not be showing
Microsoft is using a controlled, phased rollout. Eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices can receive the update sooner when Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is enabled, but Microsoft offers it only when the device is eligible and considered ready. The timing can therefore differ between PCs.

Microsoft describes its approach as a “controlled feature rollout,” expanding availability as it evaluates update data. See the Windows Experience Blog announcement and the Windows 11 26H2 release-health page for current information.
- Phased availability: the rollout may not have reached your device yet.
- Eligibility or servicing prerequisites: the documented enablement-package path applies to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 with a required cumulative update installed.
- Safeguard hold: Microsoft may temporarily withhold the offer because of a known compatibility issue.
- Organization policy: a work or school administrator may control when the update is deployed.
Check Windows Update and your current version
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Select Check for updates. If your device is eligible and ready, Windows Update can offer 26H2; enabling the setting does not override a safeguard hold.
- Check your installed Windows version in Settings > System > About. Microsoft’s documented enablement-package instructions specify Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 as the starting version.
- Install available cumulative updates. Microsoft lists the September 22, 2026 KB5124010 Preview update, or a later cumulative update, as a prerequisite for the enablement package. See Microsoft’s instructions for getting the Windows 11 2026 Update.
Microsoft says 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a common core and servicing branch; the enablement package activates features already delivered through monthly updates. Windows Update or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) can deliver the package as part of the feature update.

Look for a safeguard hold before trying to force the upgrade
Microsoft applies safeguard holds when compatibility or quality data indicates that an upgrade could fail, roll back, or cause a poor experience. The hold blocks the Windows Update offer until Microsoft validates a fix; how long it remains in place depends on the issue and its remediation.
If Windows Update says the upgrade is on its way but not ready, select Learn More to see any device-specific safeguard summary. A message like this means the device is protected by one or more holds. Repeatedly checking for updates or trying to force installation will not clear the compatibility block.

Microsoft recommends waiting for the issue to be resolved and the hold released rather than manually updating a personal PC. Disabling safeguard protections is intended for IT validation; it can expose a device to known problems and does not guarantee that installation will succeed. See Microsoft’s safeguard-hold guidance and its guidance on disabling safeguards.

Known issues and mitigations can change during a rollout, so check Microsoft’s 26H2 release-health page for the latest status. As of October 2, 2026, Microsoft reported that some applications requiring AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding might close unexpectedly after the September 22, 2026 update or later, and said it was working on a future update resolution. The same page marked USB audio, domain trust, and virtual-desktop sign-in issues as mitigated on September 29, 2026.

If this is a work or school PC
Ask your IT administrator whether your organization has scheduled 26H2 for your device or update ring. Commercial and education customers can manage the rollout through tools such as Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center; administrators may also use Windows Update for Business reports and the release-health dashboard to investigate safeguard holds. Microsoft recommends targeted validation before broader deployment.

- If you have not enabled the latest-updates setting, enable it and check Windows Update again.
- If your PC is not running 24H2 or 25H2, the documented enablement-package path does not list your starting version as eligible.
- If the required cumulative update is missing, install available Windows updates and check again.
- If Windows Update shows a readiness message, use Learn More and wait for Microsoft to clear any safeguard hold.
- If the PC is managed by an organization, ask its administrator about deployment timing and policy.
For administrators investigating a suspected hold, Windows Update for Business reports can list active holds and their eight-digit IDs. Microsoft also documents advanced registry checks, including the GStatus value where 0 indicates a hold and 2 indicates no hold in the specified key. These diagnostics are not necessary for most home users; use Microsoft’s safeguard-hold documentation for the relevant reporting and registry details.
