Windows 11 version 26H2 is an incremental update, not a platform overhaul. Its most useful change is for eligible organization-managed PCs: Windows settings backup is enabled by default, helping preserve supported settings and Microsoft Store app lists for recovery or device replacement. That is not a backup of your whole PC, and administrators still need to configure restore.
What’s new in Windows 11 26H2?
Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026. For eligible devices already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, it is delivered as a small enablement package that activates features previously delivered through servicing updates. No. For eligible 24H2 and 25H2 installations, 26H2 uses the same servicing foundation and is activated by an enablement package. That makes it a modest annual release rather than a sweeping redesign. Microsoft says installing 26H2 resets the support lifecycle for supported editions; consult its 26H2 update history for release-specific details.

Does Windows 11 26H2 back up my PC?
No—not in the sense of creating a complete disk image or copying every personal file. The change concerns Windows settings backup: it can preserve supported Windows settings and a list of Microsoft Store apps for a user environment. That information can help when recovering a setup or moving to a replacement device, but it is not a substitute for a full-file or system-image backup.
Backup and restore are separate controls. In 26H2, backup is enabled by default under the qualifying commercial policy, but administrators must still configure restore policies. Do not assume that the presence of backup automatically means settings will be restored to a device.

Who gets Windows settings backup by default?
The default applies to eligible commercial devices, not every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft’s documentation specifies Microsoft Entra ID-joined or hybrid-joined environments. Existing administrator-configured policies continue to be honored, and the feature is unavailable in GCCH and other sovereign clouds, as well as China. Why isn’t Windows 11 26H2 showing up in Windows Update?
Microsoft is using a controlled, phased rollout. Compatibility safeguard holds may delay an offer on a device even if it is otherwise eligible, so not every compatible PC receives the update at once. To signal that you want updates as soon as they become available, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available in Windows Update. Release-health information can change. At the time of the cited status information, Microsoft listed possible startup or audio problems with USB Audio Class 1.0 devices and desktop-loading problems on some systems; the desktop-loading issue was listed as mitigated through Known Issue Rollback. Check the live release-health page for the current status before troubleshooting a particular device.
