If Windows Update fails and DISM or System File Checker (SFC) also reports a problem, capture the exact Windows Update error code and the full DISM and SFC results before choosing another repair. The title alone does not identify the cause: the failed update, error code, repair output, free space, restart state, and any work or school management policy all matter.
Start with a backup and Windows’ built-in update troubleshooter. Then verify that DISM and SFC ran in the right order and completed. If those steps do not resolve the issue, follow the repair branch that matches the evidence rather than repeating commands or applying broad resets.

First, identify exactly what failed
Write down the update’s KB number, the Windows Update error code, and when the failure occurs: download, installation, or restart. Also record the complete DISM error or result and SFC’s final message. These details determine which troubleshooting branch is relevant; without them, there is no reliable way to diagnose this particular PC.

- Note whether Windows is waiting for a restart and whether the same update fails again afterward.
- Check available storage and whether the PC is managed by a work or school organization.
- Keep the full command output, not just a summary such as “DISM failed.”
Windows 11 Home 25H2 x64 build 26200.8457 corresponds to Microsoft’s May 12, 2026 cumulative update KB5089549. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 security-update notes list build 26200.9445 for Windows 11 25H2. That makes 26200.8457 an older build in the cited update history, but it does not establish that the build caused the failure or that it has a known SFC/DISM defect. Check Settings’ update history and the updates currently offered to this PC before attempting to install a package manually.

Try the low-disruption Windows Update repair first
Back up important files before troubleshooting. For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. Follow its results, restart if prompted, and try Windows Update again. If the troubleshooter does not fix the issue, use the error code to select the next step rather than assuming every update failure has the same cause.
Check that DISM and SFC ran correctly
Run these tools from an elevated Command Prompt, in this order. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Let each command finish before starting the next.

Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for its final result. - After DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. Wait until verification reaches 100% and read the final message. - Restart if requested, then retry Windows Update and note whether the same KB and error code appear.
If either command reports an error, preserve the complete output. A command that was interrupted, run without elevation, or has not finished does not provide a reliable result. Do not keep rerunning it without understanding the reported failure.

DISM normally obtains the files it needs through Windows Update. If the update client is itself broken or the repair source is unavailable, DISM may fail because it cannot retrieve those files. Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network or removable media as an alternate source.

An alternate source must be valid and compatible with the Windows installation being repaired. Do not guess a source path or use an arbitrary image. Microsoft’s documented syntax uses /Source and /LimitAccess; any example placeholder path must be replaced with the actual compatible source before running the command. If you do not have a suitable source or cannot establish compatibility, use the exact DISM error to seek the relevant Microsoft guidance rather than experimenting with image paths.
Choose the next step using the Windows Update error
Microsoft maps different update error codes to different possible causes and remedies. For example, its troubleshooting guidance associates error 0x8007000d with update-file or cache problems, while 0x800f0922 can relate to insufficient disk space or component issues. Neither code is known to apply here because no code was supplied.

Use Microsoft’s instructions for the code actually shown. Depending on that branch, the relevant checks may include internet connectivity, free disk space, update services or cache, and a possible driver or software conflict. A cache reset or other broad change should be used only when it fits the applicable guidance; it is not a universal first response to every failed update.
Consider reinstalling the current Windows version
If ordinary troubleshooting and system-file repair do not resolve persistent problems, check Settings > System > Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update. On eligible Windows 11 devices, this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Back up important files before starting.
The option may not appear when prerequisites are unmet or the device is managed by a work or school organization. If it is unavailable, do not treat that as proof of a specific fault; use the applicable update error and device-management status to determine what recovery route is permitted.
Reserve a clean installation for a prepared last resort
A clean installation is different from the in-place repair reinstall: it can remove apps and data. Use it only after careful preparation, including a verified backup and the information needed to reinstall software and restore files. Microsoft links to clean-install guidance from its update troubleshooting instructions; do not start this process as a substitute for identifying the update and repair errors.
