GhostPairing is a social-engineering attack that tricks someone into linking an attacker’s device to their WhatsApp account. The cited advisory describes misuse of WhatsApp’s device-linking feature—not a demonstrated break of end-to-end encryption. If you suspect it, check Linked devices on your primary phone and log out anything you do not recognize.
What GhostPairing means for a WhatsApp account
CERT-In’s Advisory CIAD-2025-0055 describes malicious actors exploiting WhatsApp device linking through pairing codes and social engineering. The victim is persuaded to authorize a device controlled by the attacker, often while believing they are viewing content or completing a verification step. In effect, the victim approves an additional endpoint on their account.

WhatsApp supports device linking for legitimate use. Meta Engineering explains that linked sessions can operate independently while maintaining end-to-end encryption. The advisory does not establish that GhostPairing breaks that encryption; it describes abuse of the linking process. Once a device is linked, the concern is access through that session and possible impersonation, not proof that WhatsApp’s encryption has been defeated.
Warning signs to take seriously
Be cautious if you are not setting up a device but receive an unexpected pairing-code request, encounter an unfamiliar QR-code flow, or are asked to continue a device-linking process. A vague message urging you to verify something can also be a warning sign. These clues are not an exhaustive checklist, and no single sign proves that your account has been compromised.

Check and remove unfamiliar linked devices
- Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
- Open Linked devices. Menu placement and labels can vary by operating system and app version.
- Review the listed devices. If you do not recognize an entry, select it and tap Log out.
- Enable or review two-step verification in WhatsApp’s account settings, and never share your registration code.
WhatsApp recommends checking the list regularly: How to check devices linked to your account and unlink a device you don’t recognize. Two-step verification and protecting your registration code help protect account registration and recovery; they do not by themselves remove a session that has already been linked.
If your account is still accessible
Logging out an unfamiliar device is the immediate step when you can still use WhatsApp on your primary phone. Then review two-step verification and account security settings. If a suspicious device reappears or you see activity you do not understand, keep reviewing the list and use WhatsApp’s account-help guidance. The linked-device screen does not identify who accessed the account or when and where they did so.

If your number was registered elsewhere or you lost access
- In WhatsApp, choose Log back in or Continue, enter your phone number, and request the six-digit code by SMS or phone call.
- Enter the code to re-register the number. WhatsApp says this logs other devices out.
- If WhatsApp requests a two-step verification PIN you do not know, follow the recovery process shown by WhatsApp. Recovery may not be immediate.
- After regaining access, inspect Linked devices and review two-step verification.
- Tell family and friends if someone may have used your account to impersonate you.
WhatsApp’s instructions are in How to recover a compromised account. WhatsApp says it cannot tell you who accessed an account or the time and location of access; the device list is not a forensic attribution tool.

| What you can see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your primary account still works, but a linked device looks unfamiliar | Open Linked devices, log out the unfamiliar entry, and review two-step verification and account security settings. |
| Your number appears to have been registered elsewhere, or you cannot access the account | Use WhatsApp’s re-registration flow with the SMS or call code, follow any PIN recovery steps, then check linked devices and alert contacts if impersonation is possible. |

What is established—and what is not
The cited CERT-In advisory describes the attack mechanism, but the sources cited here do not establish a reliable GhostPairing victim count or prevalence rate. Avoid treating an advisory as evidence of how many accounts have been affected. The available description also does not demonstrate that the campaign cryptographically breaks WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
