Windows 11 24H2 is starting to reach Release Preview Insiders. That’s a meaningful milestone: Microsoft is moving the build closer to what will later ship more broadly, with less churn than Dev or Beta rings.
If you’re in the Release Preview channel (or planning to join it), the key questions are simple: what you’ll likely see, how to get it safely through Windows Update, and what to do if the install fails or your system acts oddly afterward.

In many releases, Release Preview builds land in the Windows 11, version 24H2 track and often appear under a build number series such as 26100.xxx (the 24H2 train). Exact build IDs vary by wave and device compatibility.
Release Preview vs other Insider channels (and why it matters)
Windows Insider rings differ mainly in stability and how fast changes land on your PC. Release Preview is the conservative option for testing.
| Channel | Typical risk level | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Release Preview | Lower | People who want the next release without the rough edges |
| Beta | Medium | Testing features earlier than the “near final” builds |
| Dev | Higher | Developers who can tolerate regressions |
| Canary | Highest | Very early experimentation |
So when Windows 11 24H2 starts rolling out to Release Preview, it’s generally a good sign that the upgrade path is maturing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

24H2 is a feature and servicing update, not a full rewrite. Microsoft’s work focuses on improvements across performance, security, and new experiences in areas like system management and AI-enabled capabilities where supported.
Depending on your hardware and region, features may be enabled progressively. That means two Release Preview users can see different “visible” changes even when both are on the same 24H2 branch.
Prerequisites before you install 24H2
Before you accept the update, make sure the basics are in place. Upgrades fail far more often due to disk space, driver issues, or interrupted installs than due to Windows itself.
Hardware and system requirements
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are typically required for Windows 11 (for supported installs).
- Confirm you’re on a supported edition such as Windows 11 Pro or Home.
- Check you have adequate storage. A conservative target is 20–30 GB free on the system drive (C:), because feature and servicing packages can expand during installation.
Software and data safety
- Back up important files. If you rely on BitLocker, ensure you can access your recovery key (manage it in your Microsoft account or where BitLocker stores it).
- Temporarily disable non-essential security tools if they’re known to conflict with upgrades (for example, deep inspection AV). Re-enable after the update.
- Make sure peripherals are stable: remove unnecessary USB hubs/devices if you’ve had past setup glitches.
Pre-check your current state
Open Settings > System > About and confirm:
- Your Edition (Home/Pro/etc.)
- Your current Version and OS build
- Whether Windows Update reports pending restarts
How to check eligibility and get 24H2 in Windows Update
Eligibility isn’t just “being on Release Preview.” Microsoft also uses device compatibility signals and rollout waves.
Confirm your Insider ring
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Windows Insider Program.
- Verify you’re on Release Preview (sometimes labeled under the Insider channel picker).
- Restart if it prompts you to change rings.
Check for the update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If 24H2 is offered, you’ll see it as a feature update (the exact naming depends on the build and UI wording).
If nothing appears immediately, that usually means your device hasn’t reached the wave yet or Windows Update is still gathering compatibility data.
Step-by-step: install Windows 11 24H2 from Release Preview
This is the “standard” Windows Update path. It’s the least error-prone for most people because it uses Microsoft’s serviced update mechanism.

Verify version and build
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Confirm Windows 11 and Version 24H2 are listed.
- Check the OS build number matches the approximate 24H2 build train (often the 26100.xxx family for 24H2).
Run a quick compatibility sweep
- Open Windows Update again and confirm there are no pending restarts.
- Check Device Manager for yellow warning icons, especially under Network adapters and Display adapters.
- Test your main workflows: login, printing, VPN, Wi‑Fi, and sleep/wake behavior.
Re-check security posture
Ensure your antivirus status is active and Windows Security shows normal operation. If you disabled a third-party tool before the upgrade, re-enable it now.
Troubleshooting when 24H2 won’t install
Install failures usually fall into patterns: insufficient disk space, driver conflicts, corrupted update components, or a stalled download.
1) Confirm prerequisites and restart cleanly
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and run Check for updates.
- Verify free space on C:. Aim for at least 20 GB free before retrying.
2) Run Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart and try the update again.
3) Reset update components (manual)
If you get repeated failures, resetting Windows Update’s components can help. This is more technical, but it’s often effective when downloads stall or installations loop.
- Back up any critical data if you’re nervous about tools changing system services.
- Use Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as Administrator.
Reset steps vary by build and policy, so follow a reputable Microsoft procedure for your specific Windows 11 version. After the reset, restart and check for updates again.

If the installer fails near “getting updates ready,” suspect a driver problem—especially for storage controllers, Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth, VPN adapters, and GPU drivers.
- Download and install the latest drivers from the hardware vendor (not just Windows Update).
- Reboot.
- Retry the 24H2 update.
5) Try a different update method (when available)
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, Microsoft sometimes offers alternative installation methods like an update assistant or direct package options. Those paths can be more resilient because they don’t depend on the same staged download behavior.
Use only official Microsoft downloads, and make sure they match your edition and architecture (x64 vs ARM64).

If something goes wrong: rollback and recovery options
When an upgrade misbehaves, you usually have a limited rollback window. Plan for that before you install.
Recommended Free Tools
Rollback using Windows (typical)
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Look for the option to go back to the previous version (wording may include “Go back” and the prior feature update).
- Follow prompts to complete the rollback.
If that option is missing, the rollback window likely expired or the previous installation was removed automatically.
Use advanced recovery if Windows won’t boot normally
For repeated boot failures:
- Force a few restarts to trigger Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if needed.
- Use Troubleshoot options to repair or restore.
For BitLocker systems, ensure you can supply the correct recovery key when WinRE requests it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Known gotchas and common mistakes
These are the issues that show up again and again during feature updates.
Trying an upgrade on low disk space
Even if it’s “just over” the minimum requirement, feature updates can expand temporarily. Keep 20–30 GB free to avoid mid-install failures.
Skipping pending updates
If Windows Update shows pending updates or a restart required state, install those first. Skipping them can cause dependency problems during the 24H2 feature update.
Unstable power or sleep during install
Don’t run the install on battery. Also avoid changing power settings that could make the PC sleep mid-process.
Third-party networking and VPN tools
VPN clients and custom network drivers can delay or break setup. If you use a managed corporate VPN, consider testing it after the update and, if needed, reinstall the latest VPN client.
Forgetting to check post-upgrade peripherals
Audio devices, docking stations, and USB hubs can temporarily glitch after major updates. If hardware drivers update after the install, confirm they’re stable by rebooting once more.

Alternatives if you need 24H2 but can’t wait
If you’re on Release Preview and don’t see it yet, waiting for your rollout wave is normal. But if you have a hard deadline, you have options.
Wait for your wave (safest)
This avoids mixing Insider builds with manual installs. If your current setup is stable, letting Windows Update pull the offer on its own is usually the smoothest path.
- Recheck Windows Update once per day.
- Keep your PC on and updated for background compatibility checks.
Use an official Windows upgrade assistant or package (when applicable)
If Microsoft provides a supported installation method for your scenario, it can bypass some Windows Update staging steps.
- Confirm your edition and architecture.
- Download from an official Microsoft source.
- Run the tool and follow prompts.
Stay on your current build and test later (best if you’re mission-critical)
If the PC is used for work, consider waiting a few incremental Insider waves. Early waves sometimes surface specific driver incompatibilities that later waves address.
- Monitor release notes from the Insider program.
- Upgrade after a wave passes that matches your device class (laptop vs desktop, specific GPU vendors, etc.).
Windows 11 24H2 FAQ
Will upgrading to 24H2 from Release Preview affect my files and apps?
Most in-place upgrades keep files and installed apps. Still, feature updates can break compatibility for some drivers and certain third-party software. Backups matter, and you should note critical app licensing in case a reinstall is needed.
How do I know I’m actually on Windows 11 version 24H2?
Check Settings > System > About. Look for Version 24H2 and the OS build number. Release Preview builds typically show 24H2 as the version once the upgrade completes.
What if the update keeps failing with Windows Update errors?
First, ensure you have adequate free space and restart. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If it still loops, reset Windows Update components and consider updating or temporarily removing conflicting drivers and VPN/network software.
Can I move from Release Preview to the stable release later?
Yes. Insider channels change how updates arrive, not your basic ability to receive future releases. When 24H2 becomes broadly available (it shipped broadly in October 2024), you’ll still receive normal servicing updates as your device qualifies.

Release Preview is generally safer than Dev/Canary, but it’s still an Insider environment. If the machine is mission-critical, consider waiting for general availability on stable rings, or at least upgrade after you’ve verified compatibility with your core hardware and software.
Bottom Line
The Windows 11 24H2 rollout to Release Preview Insiders is a sign that Microsoft is nearing broader release readiness. If you’re already on Release Preview, the Windows Update path is usually the cleanest and most reliable way to get it.
Verify ring settings, prepare disk space and backups, and if anything breaks, use rollback/recovery options promptly. That approach turns a potentially stressful feature update into a controlled, bookmark-worthy process.
