A stolen iPhone is more than a lost phone. It’s a risk to your Apple ID, your bank and email accounts, and your personal data. The fastest moves are the ones that happen in the first minutes—before the thief can exploit anything.
This guide is built for speed and clarity. You’ll lock the device, protect your accounts, involve your carrier, and document everything so you have the best chance of recovery and minimal damage.

1) Confirm it’s really your device (and lock it fast)
Don’t waste time arguing with yourself if the phone is genuinely missing. Grab a trusted device and start Find My immediately.
2) Put it in Lost Mode via Find My
Lost Mode is designed to stop the phone from being casually used and to display a message for whoever finds it (depending on iOS and network conditions).
3) Mark it as lost and notify Apple services where applicable
After you start Lost Mode, change your Apple ID password and check your account security settings. The thief can’t unlock Activation Lock, but they can still attempt account-based attacks if your Apple ID is weak.

Use Find My to lock down the iPhone (iPhone, iPad, and web)
Find My is the core tool for stolen-device response. You’ll usually be able to: view the last location, put the device in Lost Mode, and (if needed) erase it.
On another iPhone or iPad (Find My app)
Use the Find My app on a trusted device signed into the same Apple ID.
- Open Find My.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the stolen iPhone from the list.
- Tap Mark as Lost.
- Enter a phone number and a short message for the lock screen.
- Confirm Mark as Lost.
If the phone appears offline, Lost Mode still helps. You may see the last known location and updates can resume when the phone reconnects.
On a Mac (Find My app)
Mac users can do the same thing without a browser.
- Open Find My (macOS includes it; on older setups it may appear as a bundled app).
- Select Devices.
- Choose your iPhone.
- Click Mark as Lost.
- Add a contact phone number and a lock-screen message.
- Click Activate / Mark as Lost to confirm.
On the web (iCloud.com)
Use a computer or any browser when you don’t have another Apple device handy.
- Go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Open Find Devices (sometimes shown as Find My in the interface).
- Select your iPhone.
- Choose Mark as Lost.
- Enter a phone number and message.
- Confirm Activate.
If you see options for Erase iPhone, resist erasing immediately unless you’re sure you don’t need tracking anymore.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Decide: Lost Mode vs Erase iPhone
This decision affects both recovery odds and the chance a thief can keep interacting with your device. It’s also irreversible in the short term—so be deliberate.
When to wait (tracking might still work)
Wait and keep Lost Mode on if you still see a location update or you believe the phone is moving (for example, your carrier neighborhood, a rideshare route, or a recent “last seen” ping).
Typical scenario: the phone shows a location from the last few hours, even if it’s now offline. Keeping it in Lost Mode can buy you time.
When to erase (active risk to your data)
Erase is the right move when you believe sensitive data exposure is likely and you don’t need further tracking—like if the phone was taken during a situation where the thief can attempt access quickly, or if you suspect your account security is already compromised.
- You’re seeing signs your Apple ID security is being attacked (new login attempts you didn’t make).
- You have to hand over the device to another agency quickly and can’t risk delay.
- You don’t need future location updates and prioritize data protection.
What erasing actually does
When you erase from Find My, the iPhone is set to remove its data when it can connect to the internet. Activation Lock typically remains in effect, meaning the thief still can’t set it up normally using their own Apple ID.
Secure your Apple ID and accounts immediately
Locking the device helps, but the real long-term protection comes from securing your Apple ID. A strong password and 2FA reduce the odds of account takeover.
Change your Apple ID password
Use a brand-new password you haven’t used anywhere else. A good target is a long passphrase with mixed case and symbols.
- Go to Settings on your trusted iPhone/iPad or appleid.apple.com on the web.
- Open Password & Security.
- Choose Change Password.
- Update any autofill passwords if you use iCloud Keychain.
Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
If 2FA isn’t already enabled, turn it on immediately. Apple uses a trusted device/phone number to confirm sign-ins.

Review and revoke access (devices and sessions)
Check for devices signed into your Apple ID that you don’t recognize and remove them.
- Open appleid.apple.com.
- Go to Devices and review each item.
- Remove any you don’t recognize.
- On Password & Security, review recent sign-ins.
If you see sign-in attempts from locations or times you don’t recognize, treat it as a compromised account and rotate passwords for email and other critical services tied to the Apple ID.
Check email and phone-number recovery settings
Your Apple ID recovery depends on your ability to access your email and phone number. Ensure they haven’t been altered.
Do this on a trusted device, not on the stolen phone.
Contact your carrier to stop service and protect the SIM
Call or chat with your mobile carrier right away. Your goal is to prevent misuse of your phone number and SIM, and to minimize fraudulent activity.
What to ask your carrier for
- SIM suspension or line suspension due to theft.
- Port-out protection if available.
- A new SIM (or eSIM re-provisioning) if you suspect the SIM may have been swapped.
- Confirmation your line is not eligible for unauthorized changes.
How eSIM changes the process
If your iPhone used an eSIM, the risk model changes. Your carrier will typically guide you through disabling access and installing the eSIM again on your replacement device.
Be ready to verify your identity. Carriers often require proof of ownership and account security checks.

Police report: what to include
- Date, approximate time, and location of the theft.
- Device details: model, storage size, color, and any case/unique identifiers.
- Serial number or IMEI (from your original purchase documentation or Apple account record).
- Last known location shown by Find My (capture screenshots).
- Any relevant evidence: CCTV footage, witness info, or app records like Find My location history.
Carrier and Apple support: details that speed things up
When you contact support, have your Apple ID email ready and any proof of purchase documents. For carriers, be ready with your account PIN/security answer.
Document everything
Save: Find My screenshots (Lost Mode/locations), the police report number, carrier case number, and timestamps of your calls/chats. Keep them in one place you can access from a computer.
Know the limitations (and the odds of recovery)
It’s smart to plan for outcomes. Most stolen iPhones are recovered only if the device reconnects to the internet, you have an accurate last known location, and local conditions allow it.
Why you might not see location updates
- The thief turns off the device or removes access to network.
- The iPhone is in a low-signal area.
- Your device hasn’t connected recently, so you only see the last ping.
- Find My location accuracy depends on conditions and network behavior.
Still, Lost Mode can remain active until you erase or you regain access.
What Activation Lock does
Activation Lock ties the iPhone to your Apple ID. Even if the thief physically resets the device, they usually can’t activate it without your credentials (assuming Activation Lock was enabled).
This is why account security matters: if someone gains your Apple ID, they can bypass the normal protections.

- Use recovery options available to your account (trusted phone number, trusted device, or email).
- If you can’t regain access quickly, immediately contact Apple Support and your carrier and explain you need theft response steps.
Find My shows no location
No location isn’t the end. Try:
- Confirm Find My was enabled on the stolen device before it went missing (you can check via your Apple ID settings on trusted devices).
- Refresh the iCloud.com Find Devices page and try again after 5–15 minutes.
- Confirm the correct device is selected if you have multiple iPhones/iPads.
Lost Mode fails to set
If Lost Mode doesn’t activate:
- Retry from a different platform (switch from iCloud.com to the Find My app, or vice versa).
- Make sure you’re signed into the same Apple ID used on the stolen iPhone.
- Check Apple system status for any Find My disruptions.
If it still won’t go through, proceed with Apple ID security changes and carrier suspension anyway. Device actions can often be delayed while account protection can’t.
You forgot your Apple ID password and no trusted devices are available
Use Apple’s account recovery process. It can take time, so don’t wait to protect your accounts.
- Change passwords for your email account first (since email resets often control Apple ID recovery).
- Lock down any financial accounts tied to your email or Apple services.
- Contact your carrier for SIM suspension.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting too long to enable Lost Mode. Start immediately after you confirm theft.
- Only reporting to the police. Reporting matters, but Find My and Apple ID security must happen first.
- Not changing your Apple ID password. Activation Lock helps device access, but not account misuse if your credentials are weak.
- Sharing recovery codes or verification messages. Only enter codes you generate on your own devices.
- Erasing right away without thinking. If you want the best chance to track, keep Lost Mode on until it’s no longer useful.
Bottom Line
When an iPhone is stolen, speed and sequence matter: use Find My to set Lost Mode, secure your Apple ID (password + 2FA), and contact your carrier to suspend service and protect your SIM. Then file reports and preserve evidence so your recovery and claims process doesn’t stall.

Quick FAQ
Can I track a stolen iPhone if it’s offline?
You’ll typically only see the last known location until it connects again. Lost Mode stays active and can update once the device comes back online.
Will erasing the iPhone stop the thief from using it?
Erasing removes local data once the phone connects. Activation Lock should still prevent normal setup by the thief, but erasing doesn’t magically remove the device from the thief’s hands immediately.
Should I report the theft before or after contacting my carrier?
Do both, but don’t wait. Lost Mode and account security should start immediately, and carrier suspension should happen as soon as you can.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if I don’t have another Apple device?
Use iCloud.com from a computer or any browser. If you can’t access iCloud.com due to account issues, start with carrier suspension and email account security, then proceed with Apple account recovery.
Will a thief be able to activate the iPhone with their own Apple ID?
If Activation Lock is enabled, they typically can’t activate it without your Apple ID credentials. That’s why securing your Apple ID is a must.
