Windows 10 gives you several fast ways to move between open apps, windows, and virtual desktops without breaking your workflow. Whether you prefer keyboard shortcuts, visual previews, or touchpad gestures, you can quickly jump to the task you need instead of hunting through the taskbar.

Virtual desktops are especially useful when you want to separate work, browsing, communication, or personal tasks into different spaces. With Task View, Alt + Tab, and a few simple shortcuts, you can organize your screen, switch contexts quickly, and move windows where they belong.

Use Alt + Tab to Switch Between Open Apps

The fastest way to jump between open apps in Windows 10 is the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut. Hold down Alt, press Tab, and Windows displays a switcher with thumbnails of your open windows. Keep holding Alt and press Tab again to move through the list. When the app you want is highlighted, release Alt to bring that window to the front.

This shortcut is especially useful when you are working between two or three apps, such as a browser, a Word document, File Explorer, and a chat window. If you only need to return to the last app you used, press Alt + Tab once and release both keys quickly. Windows immediately switches back to the previous window, making it ideal for copying information from one app and pasting it into another.

#1 Best Overall

Alt + Tab controls you can use

  • Alt + Tab: Open the app switcher and move forward through open windows.
  • Alt + Shift + Tab: Move backward through the open windows while the switcher is visible.
  • Alt + Ctrl + Tab: Keep the switcher open after you release the keys, so you can choose a window with the arrow keys or mouse.
  • Arrow keys: Navigate between window thumbnails when the switcher is open.
  • Enter: Open the selected window from the switcher.
  • Esc: Close the switcher without changing apps.

By default, Alt + Tab cycles through windows on the desktop you are currently using. This matters if you use Windows 10 virtual desktops, because an app open on another desktop may not appear in the switcher unless your multitasking settings are configured to show windows from all desktops. To check this, open Settings, go to System > Multitasking, and review the options under Virtual desktops. You can choose whether the taskbar and Alt + Tab show windows from only the desktop you are using or from all desktops.

For smoother switching, keep your most-used windows easy to recognize. Maximize the apps you use most, close duplicate browser or File Explorer windows you no longer need, and give documents meaningful filenames so their thumbnails and titles are easier to identify. If the Alt + Tab list feels crowded, that is often a sign that some apps belong on a separate virtual desktop, such as one desktop for communication and another for focused work.

Open Task View to See All Windows and Desktops

Task View is Windows 10’s full-screen workspace overview. While Alt + Tab is ideal for quickly jumping to another app, Task View is better when you want to see everything at once: open windows, running apps, and any virtual desktops you have created. It gives you a visual layout, so it is especially useful when several similar windows are open, such as mulle browser windows, File Explorer folders, Word documents, or remote desktop sessions.

The fastest way to open Task View with the keyboard is to press Windows key + Tab. You can also click the Task View button on the taskbar, which looks like a rectangle with smaller panels beside it. If you do not see the button, right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Show Task View button. On touch-enabled devices, you may also be able to open the same view by swiping in from the left edge of the screen, depending on your device and Windows settings.

Once Task View is open, the main area shows thumbnails of your open windows. Click any thumbnail to bring that app to the front. If a program has more than one window open, each window appears separately, making it easy to choose the exact document, folder, or browser window you need. This is often faster than cycling through windows one by one, because you can identify the target visually instead of relying on app icons or window titles.

What you can do in Task View

  • Switch to an open window: select its thumbnail to return to it immediately.
  • Close a window: hover over a thumbnail and click the X in the corner.
  • Check your desktops: view your virtual desktops along the top of the Task View screen.
  • Create a new desktop: click New desktop to separate workspaces for different tasks.
  • Move windows between desktops: drag a window thumbnail onto another desktop at the top of the screen.

Task View becomes more valuable when you use virtual desktops. For example, you might keep email, chat, and calendar apps on one desktop, research and browser windows on a second desktop, and a spreadsheet or presentation on a third. Opening Task View lets you confirm where everything is before switching. This reduces clutter because you do not need to minimize windows repeatedly or crowd the taskbar with unrelated tasks.

For a smoother workflow, keep each desktop focused on a clear purpose. Avoid spreading one project across too many desktops unless there is a real benefit, because that can make apps harder to find. If you lose track of a window, open Task View and scan the thumbnails across your desktops. You can then click the correct desktop, select the needed window, or drag it to a better location. Used this way, Task View acts as a control center for your Windows 10 workspace rather than just another app switcher.

Create and Manage Virtual Desktops

Virtual desktops in Windows 10 let you separate groups of open apps into different workspaces without needing extra monitors. For example, you might keep email, Teams, and your calendar on one desktop, a browser and Word document on another, and music or reference material on a third. Each desktop can hold its own set of windows, making it easier to focus on one type of task at a time.

To create a new virtual desktop, open Task View by clicking the Task View button on the taskbar or pressing Windows + Tab. At the top of the screen, select New desktop. Windows will add another desktop, usually named Desktop 2, Desktop 3, and so on. Click any desktop thumbnail to switch to it, then open the apps you want to use there.

Common virtual desktop actions

  • Create a desktop: Open Task View with Windows + Tab, then choose New desktop.
  • Switch desktops: Open Task View and click the desktop you want to use.
  • Close a desktop: In Task View, point to a desktop thumbnail and click the X in its corner.
  • Keep your apps: Closing a desktop does not close its apps. Windows moves those open windows to another remaining desktop.

For day-to-day use, it helps to create desktops around activities rather than individual apps. A simple setup could be Desktop 1 for communication, Desktop 2 for focused work, and Desktop 3 for research. This keeps related windows together and reduces the need to dig through a crowded Alt + Tab list. If you use several browser windows, placing them on separate desktops by project can also make them easier to find.

You can also adjust how virtual desktops behave in Windows 10 settings. Go to Settings > System > Multitasking and look for the Virtual desktops options. These settings control whether the taskbar shows windows from only the desktop you are using or from all desktops, and whether Alt + Tab shows windows from all desktops or only the current one. If you prefer a cleaner workspace, show only the current desktop’s windows. If you often jump between tasks, showing all windows may be faster.

Virtual desktops are most useful when you keep them limited and purposeful. Too many desktops can become harder to manage than one busy screen. Start with two or three, close desktops you no longer need, and group apps in a way that matches how you work. Used this way, virtual desktops give you a quick way to reduce clutter while keeping windows open and ready.

Switch Between Desktops with Keyboard Shortcuts

Once you have more than one virtual desktop open in Windows 10, keyboard shortcuts are the fastest way to move between them without breaking your flow. Instead of opening Task View and clicking a desktop thumbnail, you can jump left or right across your desktop list with a simple key combination. This is especially useful if you keep different kinds of work separated, such as email and chat on one desktop, a browser and research on another, and documents or spreadsheets on a third.

To switch to the desktop on the right, press Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow. To switch to the desktop on the left, press Windows + Ctrl + Left Arrow. Windows moves through your virtual desktops in the same order they appear in Task View, from left to right. If you are on Desktop 1 and press Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow, you move to Desktop 2. Press it again and you move to Desktop 3, if one exists. The left-arrow shortcut works the same way in the opposite direction.

  • Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow: switch to the next virtual desktop on the right.
  • Windows + Ctrl + Left Arrow: switch to the previous virtual desktop on the left.
  • Windows + Ctrl + D: create a new virtual desktop and switch to it immediately.
  • Windows + Ctrl + F4: close the current virtual desktop.

These shortcuts work best when you keep your desktops arranged with a clear pattern. For example, you might use Desktop 1 for communication, Desktop 2 for active work, Desktop 3 for reference material, and Desktop 4 for media or monitoring tools. With that setup, you can quickly build muscle memory: one shortcut press to move from email to your main project, another press to move to your research, and so on. If you frequently lose track of where you are, open Task View with Windows + Tab to see the full desktop row and confirm the order.

When closing desktops, remember that Windows + Ctrl + F4 closes only the virtual desktop you are currently viewing, not the apps on it. Any open windows from that desktop are moved automatically to another desktop, usually the one immediately to the left. This makes the shortcut safe for cleaning up extra desktops, but it can also make a busy desktop feel cluttered if many windows are moved at once. Before closing a desktop, switch to it and check whether any apps should be moved manually or closed first.

For the smoothest experience, combine desktop-switching shortcuts with app-switching shortcuts. Use Windows + Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow to move between workspaces, then use Alt + Tab to switch between apps inside the current desktop. If you want a visual overview, use Windows + Tab instead. This gives you three levels of control: fast app switching, fast desktop switching, and a full layout view when you need to reorganize your workspace.

Move Apps Between Virtual Desktops

Once you have more than one virtual desktop, you can reorganize your workspace by moving open app windows from one desktop to another. This is useful when a window ends up in the wrong place, or when you want to separate tasks more clearly. For example, you might keep email and chat on one desktop, a browser with research tabs on another, and Excel or PowerPoint on a third desktop for focused work.

The easiest way to move a window is through Task View. Press Windows + Tab to open Task View, then look at the open windows shown on the current desktop. Find the app window you want to move, right-click it, choose Move to, and select the destination desktop, such as Desktop 2 or Desktop 3. If you prefer using the mouse, you can also drag the window thumbnail onto another desktop shown along the top of Task View.

Move a window from Task View

  1. Press Windows + Tab to open Task View.
  2. Locate the window you want to move.
  3. Right-click the window thumbnail.
  4. Select Move to.
  5. Choose the virtual desktop where the window should go.

You can also use the right-click menu to place a window on every virtual desktop. In Task View, right-click the app window and choose Show this window on all desktops. This is helpful for apps you need constantly, such as a music player, a messaging app, or a monitoring dashboard. Some apps also offer Show windows from this app on all desktops, which applies the setting to every open window from that same program.

For cleaner desktop management, move windows as soon as you notice they belong somewhere else. If a browser window is for a work project, move it to your work desktop before opening more tabs. If a meeting app needs to stay visible while you switch contexts, show it on all desktops instead of duplicating windows. Naming is not available for virtual desktops in all Windows 10 versions, so a simple order helps: keep communication on the first desktop, active work on the second, and reference material on the third. This makes Windows + Ctrl + Left Arrow and Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow easier to use because you know what each desktop contains.

Use Touchpad Gestures for Faster Navigation

If your Windows 10 laptop has a precision touchpad, gestures can make switching between apps and virtual desktops feel much faster than reaching for the keyboard or moving the pointer to the taskbar. These gestures are especially useful when you are working on a small screen, because you can jump between tasks without rearranging windows or opening extra menus.

The most useful gesture for app switching is a three-finger swipe up. This opens Task View, showing your open windows and virtual desktops in one place. From there, tap any window to bring it forward, or choose a desktop from the row at the top of the screen. A three-finger swipe down shows the desktop by minimizing your open windows, and swiping up again can bring them back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For moving between virtual desktops, use a four-finger swipe left or right. Swiping left moves to the desktop on the left, while swiping right moves to the desktop on the right. This is one of the quickest ways to separate work areas, such as keeping email and chat on one desktop, browser research on another, and documents or spreadsheets on a third. Once the gesture becomes familiar, switching desktops feels similar to moving between pages on a phone or tablet.

Common Windows 10 touchpad gestures

Gesture Action
Three-finger swipe up Open Task View to see apps and desktops
Three-finger swipe down Show the desktop
Three-finger swipe left or right Switch between recently used open apps
Four-finger swipe left or right Switch between virtual desktops
Four-finger tap Open Action Center, depending on settings

You can check or customize these gestures in Settings > Devices > Touchpad. Look for the “Three-finger gestures” and “Four-finger gestures” sections. If you do not see many options, your device may not have a precision touchpad, or the manufacturer’s touchpad driver may be handling gestures separately. In that case, check the laptop maker’s touchpad utility or support software.

For the smoothest workflow, combine gestures with the desktop organization you already created. Keep related apps grouped together, then use four-finger swipes to move between those groups. If you need to move a window to another desktop, open Task View with a three-finger swipe up, drag the window to the target desktop, and then continue working there. This keeps your hands on the touchpad and makes virtual desktops feel like a natural part of everyday navigation.
