Internet Explorer proxy settings determine how the browser connects to the web, either directly or through a proxy server that routes traffic on behalf of the device. Although Internet Explorer is now a legacy browser, its proxy configuration still matters because many Windows components and older business applications rely on the same Internet Options settings.
These settings are found in the Windows Internet Options panel under the Connections tab, where you can enable a manual proxy server, use an automatic configuration script, turn on auto-detect, or remove proxy routing entirely. Changing them can affect browsing, authentication, access to internal company resources, and whether certain apps can reach the internet.

Understanding how to enable, disable, and test these options helps resolve common problems such as pages not loading, repeated credential prompts, “proxy server isn’t responding” errors, or apps connecting only on certain networks. The steps are straightforward, but the right choice depends on whether the device is on a home network, a managed workplace network, or using a legacy application that depends on Internet Explorer settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat Internet Explorer Proxy Settings Control
Internet Explorer proxy settings control how the browser, and many Windows components that rely on the same configuration, reach websites and other internet resources. Instead of connecting directly to a destination such as https://example.com, the request can be sent first to a proxy server. That proxy may inspect traffic, apply access rules, cache content, require authentication, or route the connection through a specific network path. In Internet Explorer, these settings are found through Internet Options, most commonly under Connections > LAN settings.

These settings are not limited to the Internet Explorer window itself. Internet Explorer uses the Windows Internet, or WinINet, configuration store, which is also used by many legacy desktop applications, older control panels, embedded browser components, and enterprise tools. For example, an old accounting application, a vendor updater, or a help desk utility may fail to connect if the Internet Options proxy is wrong, even if a modern browser appears to work normally. This is changing proxy settings in Internet Explorer can have a wider effect across Windows than users often expect.
Proxy options controlled from Internet Explorer
- Manual proxy server: Sends HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, or SOCKS traffic through a specified proxy address and port, such as proxy.company.local:8080.
- Bypass proxy for local addresses: Allows intranet names, local servers, and internal resources to connect directly instead of going through the proxy.
- Proxy exceptions: Defines specific hosts, domains, or IP ranges that should not use the proxy, such as *.contoso.local or 10.*.
- Automatic configuration script: Uses a PAC file URL to decide which destinations require a proxy and which should connect directly.
- Automatically detect settings: Uses Web Proxy Auto-Discovery, often called WPAD, to locate proxy configuration on managed networks.
The impact depends on the application. Programs built to use WinINet usually follow the same proxy settings visible in Internet Explorer and Internet Options. Other software may use WinHTTP, its own proxy configuration, or browser-specific settings instead. For instance, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and Firefox may not always behave exactly like Internet Explorer, especially when managed by separate policies or profiles. Command-line tools and Windows services can also use different proxy stores, which explains cases where Internet Explorer opens a site successfully but a background updater, activation service, or script still cannot connect.
In business environments, Internet Explorer proxy settings are often managed by Group Policy, mobile device management, or a configuration script. Users may find that the proxy fields are locked, reset after sign-in, or automatically repopulated when connected to the corporate network. On home networks, these settings are usually blank unless a user has installed privacy software, malware, a debugging proxy, or a VPN client that modifies them. When proxy settings are misconfigured, common symptoms include pages that never load, repeated credential prompts, certificate warnings, “proxy server isn’t responding” messages, or access to internal sites failing while public websites still work.
How to Enable Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer
To enable proxy settings in Internet Explorer, open the browser and go to Tools > Internet options. If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to display it, or click the gear icon in the upper-right corner and select Internet options. In the Internet Options window, select the Connections tab, then click LAN settings. This opens the Local Area Network settings dialog, where Internet Explorer reads and applies proxy configuration for most standard web connections.
In the LAN Settings window, enable Use a proxy server for your LAN. Enter the proxy server address in the Address field and the port number in the Port field. A typical proxy entry might use a hostname such as proxy.company.local or an IP address such as 192.168.1.50, with a port such as 8080, 3128, or 80. If your organization provides separate proxy servers for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, or SOCKS traffic, click Advanced and enter the appropriate server and port for each protocol.
Basic steps to enable a manual proxy
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click the Tools menu or gear icon, then choose Internet options.
- Select the Connections tab.
- Click LAN settings.
- Check Use a proxy server for your LAN.
- Type the proxy Address and Port.
- Optionally check Bypass proxy server for local addresses.
- Click OK, then OK again to save the change.
The Bypass proxy server for local addresses option is commonly used on business networks. It allows connections to intranet sites, file servers, printers, and internal web applications to go directly instead of through the proxy. For example, addresses such as http://intranet or http://server01 may fail or respond slowly if sent through an external proxy. In the Advanced proxy settings, you can also add exceptions manually, such as *.contoso.local, 10.*, or specific hostnames separated by semicolons.
After saving the settings, close and reopen Internet Explorer, then test a known website. If the proxy requires authentication, Internet Explorer may prompt for a username and password. On domain-joined computers, credentials may be passed automatically depending on the proxy and Windows authentication configuration. These settings can also affect legacy Windows applications that rely on Internet Options or WinINet, so enabling a proxy here may change connectivity behavior outside the browser as well.

How to Disable Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer
Disabling proxy settings in Internet Explorer removes the manual proxy server configuration used by the browser and by many older Windows applications that rely on the Windows Internet Options stack. This is useful when a proxy server has been retired, when a laptop moves from a corporate network to a home network, or when incorrect proxy details are causing pages to fail with errors such as “The proxy server isn’t responding” or “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.”
To turn off a manually configured proxy, open Internet Explorer, select the Tools gear icon, and choose Internet options. If the menu bar is visible, you can also select Tools > Internet options. In the Internet Options window, open the Connections tab, then select LAN settings. Under Proxy server, clear the checkbox for Use a proxy server for your LAN. If the Advanced button contains separate proxy entries for HTTP, Secure, FTP, or Socks, clearing the main proxy checkbox disables those manual entries for LAN browsing.
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Select the Tools gear icon, then select Internet options.
- Go to the Connections tab.
- Select LAN settings.
- Clear Use a proxy server for your LAN.
- Select OK, then select OK again to close Internet Options.
After saving the change, close and reopen Internet Explorer so the browser starts a new session with the updated network settings. Applications that use Windows Internet Options may also need to be restarted. This can include older versions of Microsoft Office, legacy business tools, embedded browser controls, and some installers or updaters. The change does not necessarily affect applications that maintain their own proxy configuration, such as some third-party browsers, VPN clients, developer tools, or command-line utilities.
If the computer is domain-joined or managed by an organization, the proxy setting may turn itself back on after a restart, sign-in, or policy refresh. In that case, the setting is probably controlled by Group Policy, mobile device management, a security agent, or a logon script. You may be able to clear the checkbox temporarily, but the managed configuration will override it. For work or school devices, contact the administrator before removing the proxy permanently, because the proxy may be required for filtering, authentication, auditing, or access to internal sites.

When disabling a manual proxy, also check the automatic settings in the same LAN Settings dialog. If Use automatic configuration script remains enabled, Windows may still receive proxy instructions from a PAC file. If Automatically detect settings is enabled, Windows may use Web Proxy Auto-Discovery to locate a proxy on the network. These options are separate from the manual proxy checkbox, so disabling one does not automatically disable the others.
- Manual proxy only: Clear Use a proxy server for your LAN.
- No proxy at all: Clear the manual proxy checkbox, clear Use automatic configuration script, and, if appropriate, clear Automatically detect settings.
- Corporate network: Leave auto-detect or the configuration script enabled if your administrator requires it.
To confirm the change, try opening a public website and an internal site if you use one. If public sites work but internal resources stop loading, the proxy may have been needed for corporate access. If no sites load, check whether a VPN is connected, whether DNS is working, and whether Windows still shows a proxy under Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. On modern Windows versions, Internet Explorer’s LAN settings and the Windows proxy page reflect many of the same underlying settings, so changes in one place can appear in the other.
Using Automatic Configuration Scripts and Auto-Detect
Internet Explorer can use automatic proxy configuration instead of a manually entered proxy server and port. These options are found in Internet Options under the Connections tab. Select LAN settings, then look in the Automatic configuration area. The two main choices are Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script. These settings are still relevant because they are stored in Windows Internet Options and can be used by legacy Windows applications, embedded browser controls, and older enterprise software that relies on WinINet.

Automatically detect settings uses Web Proxy Auto-Discovery, commonly called WPAD. When enabled, Windows attempts to locate proxy instructions automatically, often through DHCP or DNS. In a corporate network, this may allow a laptop to receive the correct proxy configuration without users typing anything. For example, when a device joins the office network, it may discover a WPAD file that tells Internet Explorer which internal sites should bypass the proxy and which external sites should route through it.
Recommended Free Tools
Use automatic configuration script points Internet Explorer to a specific proxy auto-configuration file, usually a PAC file. The address often looks like http://proxy.example.com/proxy.pac or http://wpad.example.com/wpad.dat. A PAC file contains rules that decide, per URL or host, whether traffic should go directly to the destination or through a proxy server. This is more flexible than a single manual proxy entry because administrators can define different behavior for intranet sites, cloud services, regional gateways, and failover proxy servers.
How to configure automatic proxy options
- Open Internet Options from Control Panel, Internet Explorer, or the Windows search box.
- Select the Connections tab.
- Click LAN settings.
- To use WPAD, check Automatically detect settings.
- To use a PAC file, check Use automatic configuration script and enter the script address.
- Click OK, then close and reopen Internet Explorer or the affected legacy application.
If both automatic detection and a script are enabled, behavior can vary by Windows version and application, but the specified script commonly takes precedence once it is reachable. In managed environments, Group Policy or device management tools may lock these fields or reapply them after a restart. If settings revert after you change them, check whether the computer is domain-joined or managed by an organization.
Common issues with auto-detect and PAC files
- Slow first page load: WPAD discovery can add delays if the network does not provide a valid discovery response.
- Cannot reach websites: The PAC file may be unavailable, blocked, or returning an unreachable proxy address.
- Internal sites fail: The PAC rules may not include bypass entries for local domains or private IP ranges.
- Settings keep returning: Group Policy, registry-based configuration, or endpoint management may be enforcing proxy options.
For troubleshooting, test the PAC script URL directly in the browser to confirm it downloads or displays text. Then try disabling Automatically detect settings temporarily to see whether WPAD discovery is causing delays. If a manual proxy works but the PAC file does not, the issue is usually in the script address, script availability, DNS resolution, or the PAC rules themselves. On corporate systems, contact the network or desktop support team before making permanent changes, since these settings may be required for authentication, filtering, logging, or access to internal resources.
Applying Proxy Settings Through Windows Internet Options
Internet Explorer proxy settings are not stored only inside the browser. They are managed through the Windows Internet Options control panel, which also affects many legacy desktop applications that rely on the WinINet networking stack. This includes older business apps, embedded browser components, some update utilities, and tools that use Windows’ user-level web configuration instead of maintaining their own proxy settings.

You can also find them by opening Control Panel, selecting Network and Internet, and then choosing Internet Options. In the Internet Properties window, go to the Connections tab and select LAN settings. This is the same configuration area used by Internet Explorer when you open proxy settings from the browser interface.
Proxy options available in LAN settings
- Automatically detect settings: Allows Windows to search the network for proxy configuration using WPAD. This is common on corporate or school networks.
- Use automatic configuration script: Lets you enter a PAC file URL, such as http://proxy.example.com/proxy.pac, which tells applications when and how to use a proxy.
- Use a proxy server for your LAN: Enables a manually entered proxy address and port, such as proxy.company.local and 8080.
- Bypass proxy server for local addresses: Sends local intranet traffic directly instead of routing it through the proxy.
- Advanced: Lets you set separate proxy servers for HTTP, Secure, FTP, and Socks traffic, and define exceptions for specific domains or IP ranges.
After changing these options, select OK in the LAN Settings window, then select OK again in Internet Properties. Most applications that read Windows Internet Options will use the updated configuration the next time they open a new connection. If an application was already running, close and reopen it so it can reload the current proxy settings.

On managed devices, these settings may be controlled by Group Policy, mobile device management, or security software. If checkboxes are unavailable, keep re-enabling themselves, or change back after a restart, the computer is likely receiving proxy configuration from an administrator-controlled policy. In that case, local edits in Internet Options may be temporary or blocked completely.

Troubleshooting Internet Explorer Proxy Problems
Proxy issues in Internet Explorer often appear as pages that never load, repeated authentication prompts, certificate warnings, or errors such as “This page can’t be displayed.” Because Internet Explorer uses the Windows Internet Options configuration, the same proxy problem can also affect legacy desktop applications, older enterprise tools, Control Panel applets, and components that rely on WinINet settings. Start troubleshooting by confirming whether the problem affects only Internet Explorer or mulle Windows applications.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Open Internet Options from Internet Explorer by selecting Tools or the gear icon, then Internet options. Go to the Connections tab and select LAN settings. Check whether Use a proxy server for your LAN, Automatically detect settings, or Use automatic configuration script is enabled. A common cause of connection failure is an old proxy server address, an unreachable port, or a configuration script URL that no longer exists.
Common proxy checks
- Verify the proxy address and port: Make sure the server name or IP address is typed correctly and that the port matches the proxy service, such as 8080, 3128, or a company-specific port.
- Test without the proxy: Temporarily clear Use a proxy server for your LAN, apply the change, and reload a known working site. If the site opens, the proxy configuration or proxy server is likely the problem.
- Check bypass rules: Select Advanced under the proxy settings and review the exceptions list. Internal sites may fail if they are forced through an external proxy instead of being bypassed.
- Confirm script access: If a PAC file or automatic configuration script is used, paste the script URL into the browser address bar to confirm that the file can be downloaded.
- Review authentication: Repeated username and password prompts can indicate expired credentials, missing domain prefixes, or a proxy that does not allow the current account.
If Automatically detect settings is enabled, Windows may be trying to locate Web Proxy Auto-Discovery information from the network. This can cause delays when opening Internet Explorer, especially on networks that do not provide WPAD records. Disable auto-detect temporarily to see whether startup and page loading improve. In managed environments, these options may be controlled by Group Policy, so settings can reappear after a restart or policy refresh.
Also check whether security software, VPN clients, or endpoint protection tools are inserting or modifying proxy settings. Some products route traffic through a local proxy address such as 127.0.0.1 with a custom port. If that local service stops running, Internet Explorer may lose web access even though the network connection is active. Restarting the security client, reconnecting the VPN, or disabling the local proxy entry can help isolate the cause.
Quick diagnostic sequence
- Confirm that the computer has basic network access by pinging or opening an internal resource.
- Open Internet Options and record the current LAN settings before making changes.
- Disable the proxy and automatic configuration options, then test a public website.
- Re-enable the required corporate proxy, script, or auto-detect option one at a time.
- Clear cached credentials if authentication prompts continue, then sign in again with the correct domain account.
- Restart Internet Explorer and any affected legacy application after changing proxy settings.
When the settings look correct but connections still fail, compare them with a working computer on the same network. Matching the proxy server, port, bypass list, and script URL often reveals a missing exception or outdated entry. If the proxy is centrally managed, contact the network or system administrator with the error message, current proxy values, and the specific sites or applications that fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Internet Explorer proxy settings still affect Windows if I do not use Internet Explorer?
Yes. Internet Explorer proxy settings are stored in Windows Internet Options, and many legacy apps, control panel tools, and older enterprise programs still read those settings. Changing the proxy under Internet Options can affect apps that use the Windows/WinINet networking stack, even if your main browser is Edge, Chrome, or Firefox.

Where do I find the proxy settings for Internet Explorer?
Open Control Panel, go to Internet Options, select the Connections tab, and click LAN settings. From there you can enable a manual proxy server, use an automatic configuration script, or turn on automatic detection. The same window can also be opened from Internet Explorer through Tools, Internet options, Connections, and LAN settings.
Should I use a manual proxy address or an automatic configuration script?
Use a manual proxy address when your administrator or proxy provider gives you a specific server name or IP address and port, such as port 8080 or 3128. Use an automatic configuration script when you are given a PAC file URL, usually ending in .pac, because it can choose different proxy rules for different sites. In managed business networks, the script option is often preferred because IT can update routing rules without changing every computer manually.
What should I check if Internet Explorer stops loading websites after enabling a proxy?
First confirm that the proxy server address and port are typed correctly and that the proxy server is online. If you are on a home network and do not intentionally use a proxy, disable “Use a proxy server for your LAN” and test again. Also check whether “Use automatic configuration script” or “Automatically detect settings” is enabled, because a bad PAC file or failed auto-detection can cause long delays or connection errors.
How do I completely disable proxy settings in Internet Explorer?
Go to Internet Options, open the Connections tab, click LAN settings, and clear “Use a proxy server for your LAN.” If you also want to stop automatic proxy configuration, clear “Use automatic configuration script” and “Automatically detect settings.” Click OK to save the changes, then close and reopen Internet Explorer or the affected legacy application.
Bottom Line
Internet Explorer proxy settings are managed through Internet Options under LAN settings, and they can affect more than just IE because many Windows components and legacy applications still rely on the same system proxy configuration. Knowing how to enable, disable, or reset these settings is useful when troubleshooting blocked websites, authentication prompts, slow browsing, or apps that suddenly cannot connect.
If you are unsure whether a proxy should be enabled, check with your network administrator or verify your VPN, security software, and automatic configuration script settings first. For most home users, disabling manual proxy entries and leaving automatic detection on is a good first step when fixing unexpected connection problems.
