Windows 10 Extended Security Updates: Who Needs Them and How They Work

Windows 10 ESU offers eligible personal-use PCs a limited bridge of critical and important security updates. Learn the eligibility rules, enrollment steps, costs, and regional end-date differences.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use an eligible personal PC running Windows 10 version 22H2, Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program can provide critical and important security updates for a limited time. It does not restore full Windows support: upgrading to Windows 11 or moving to another supported device may be a better long-term choice.

Who needs Windows 10 ESU?

ESU is for people who plan to keep using an eligible Windows 10 PC after standard support ended and want Microsoft security updates while they delay a transition. It is optional, not a requirement for every Windows 10 owner. Whether you can enroll depends on your Windows version, how the device is used, and the consumer offer available in your region.

Microsoft’s consumer guidance describes eligibility for personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in supported markets. Organization-managed devices and devices enrolled in enterprise licensing programs are excluded from the consumer route. Commercial customers use a separate ESU program, and LTSC/LTSB editions follow their own lifecycle policies. Check Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support guidance for your region and edition.

Windows 10 PCs continue to work after support ends, but without ESU they no longer receive regular security updates from Microsoft. Microsoft warns that antivirus software alone is not enough to keep an unsupported Windows installation protected.

What does ESU include—and what does it leave out?

Microsoft says consumer ESU includes critical and important security updates only. It does not add features, provide customer-requested non-security updates, or accommodate design-change requests. It is not a general maintenance plan or an extension of normal Windows support.

Microsoft’s support exception is limited to help with ESU license activation and installation of ESU updates. Enrolling does not mean you will receive general technical support for Windows 10.

Who is eligible for consumer ESU?

Before looking for the enrollment option, confirm that you are using Windows 10 version 22H2 and that the PC is for personal use rather than managed by an organization. Microsoft requires a Microsoft account for its consumer enrollment process. Availability and terms vary by region, so the offer shown on your own eligible PC is the most relevant guide to your choices.

For a business or organization-managed PC, do not use consumer ESU guidance to determine eligibility or coverage. Administrators should consult Microsoft’s commercial ESU information and confirm the applicable license, servicing channel, and coverage year. The commercial schedule is not the consumer schedule.

How do you prepare and enroll a PC?

Consumer enrollment uses a built-in Settings flow on eligible Windows 10 22H2 PCs. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 article for licensing preparation package KB5126256 specifies that the device first needs a security update released on or after October 14, 2025, followed by that package. The package prepares licensing and enrollment components; Microsoft explicitly says it does not enroll the device or provide ongoing security updates by itself.

  1. Check your Windows version: Confirm the PC is running Windows 10 version 22H2 and is being used personally.
  2. Install a qualifying security update: Make sure the device has a security update dated October 14, 2025 or later.
  3. Install KB5126256: Use Microsoft’s KB5126256 licensing preparation package guidance to check the package details and installation instructions.
  4. Complete enrollment in Settings: After preparation, use the ESU enrollment option in the built-in Settings flow and follow the choices shown on the PC. A Microsoft account is required under Microsoft’s consumer guidance.

Installing the preparation package is not a substitute for the final enrollment action. If the enrollment option is missing, recheck the edition, version, update prerequisites, and whether the device is organization-managed; regional availability can also affect the offer.

How long do updates continue?

Windows 10 standard support ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance in some locales says enrolled devices receive critical and important security updates through October 12, 2027. Microsoft also says consumer enrollment options and timing may vary by region, and some official pages have shown the earlier one-year consumer period ending October 13, 2026. Check the current guidance for your country and the date shown in the Settings offer rather than assuming one consumer end date applies everywhere.

Commercial ESU uses a separate schedule. Microsoft’s commercial lifecycle FAQ lists coverage ending October 13, 2026 for Year 1, October 12, 2027 for Year 2, and October 10, 2028 for Year 3. Those dates do not mean every consumer PC receives three years of ESU.

Should you enroll, upgrade, or replace the PC?

Choose based on the device you have and how long you intend to keep it—not just on whether an ESU offer appears. Compare these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the PC run Windows 11? Microsoft recommends upgrading an eligible PC to Windows 11 as the transition path.
  • Is the consumer offer available for this device and region? Check personal-use eligibility and the terms presented on the PC.
  • How long do you need to keep this PC? ESU provides a limited security-update bridge, not an indefinite support plan.
  • Is the device ineligible or ready to be replaced? Microsoft suggests considering a new Windows 11 PC. Back up your files before moving to another device.

ESU can make sense when you need more time with a qualifying PC. If it cannot enroll or you want a longer-term supported setup, plan an upgrade or replacement instead. A new device is optional for ESU enrollment.

Sources and regional details

Microsoft’s consumer terms, eligibility, and dates can differ by locale and may change. For the current offer, consult Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support page, the KB5126256 package article, and Microsoft’s commercial ESU FAQ if the PC is managed or used by an organization. The consumer coverage date cited here reflects Microsoft guidance checked on October 7, 2026 and is not a guarantee that the same end date or enrollment options apply in every country.
