If Enroll now is missing, check your Windows edition, update prerequisites, account, and device management status. If Windows says you’re enrolled but security updates are not arriving, verify enrollment in Windows Update first: installing the ESU preparation package alone does not enroll a PC.
First identify which ESU problem you have
- Enrollment option missing: Check that the PC meets the consumer ESU requirements and is not managed in a way that excludes consumer enrollment.
- Enrollment wizard fails: Check Windows Update and the exact error. Microsoft’s KB5071959 addressed a specific consumer enrollment wizard failure, not every possible failure.
- Enrolled, but updates are missing: Confirm ESU enrollment status, then troubleshoot Windows Update using the error and update history.
Why is “Enroll now” missing?
Check Windows version, edition, and prerequisites
Microsoft’s consumer ESU program requires Windows 10 version 22H2 on Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstations edition. The PC must have the latest Windows update and the ESU Licensing Preparation Package, KB5126256. The account used to enroll must be an administrator Microsoft account, not a child account. A local-account user may be prompted to sign in to a Microsoft account during enrollment. See Microsoft’s consumer ESU eligibility and enrollment guidance.

Check whether the PC is managed or otherwise excluded
Consumer enrollment is not offered on kiosk devices, devices joined to an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra, devices enrolled in mobile device management (MDM), or devices that already have an ESU license. Microsoft says Microsoft Entra-registered devices can use consumer ESU. If a consumer-enrolled PC later becomes a domain-joined or MDM-managed commercial device, consumer enrollment is suspended until it is no longer used that way. For a managed work or school PC, ask the organization’s administrator about its commercial ESU route rather than trying to force the consumer flow.

- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account. If you use a local account, be ready to sign in with a Microsoft account during enrollment.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- If the requirements are met, select Enroll now and follow the prompts.
Microsoft describes consumer enrollment options as syncing PC settings, redeeming Rewards, or making a one-time purchase. On Microsoft’s U.S. program page, the listed options are no additional cost when syncing PC settings, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30 USD purchase plus applicable tax. Currency, availability, and terms can vary by region. An existing consumer ESU license can cover up to 10 devices; to enroll another eligible PC, sign in with the Microsoft account holding the license and choose Add device in the enrollment flow. Install the current preparation package in the right order
Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 support article identifies KB5126256 as the current ESU Licensing Preparation Package for Windows 10 version 22H2, superseding earlier preparation packages such as KB5072653.
- Install Windows 10 version 22H2 and a security update released on or after October 14, 2025. Microsoft gives KB5066791 as an example.
- Install KB5126256. Depending on device management and policy, it may be offered through Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Microsoft Update Catalog, or WSUS.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and complete enrollment.
KB5126256 prepares licensing and enrollment components; it does not enroll the PC or install ESU security updates by itself. On managed devices, policy may determine whether and how the package is deployed. See Microsoft’s KB5126256 article.

What to do if the enrollment wizard fails
Microsoft’s out-of-band update KB5071959, released November 11, 2025, addressed a particular issue that could cause the Windows 10 Consumer ESU enrollment wizard to fail. For that documented failure, Microsoft instructed affected users to open Windows Update, select Check for updates, install KB5071959, and restart. The release note also says the latest servicing stack update must be installed; without it, a Windows update might not be offered. Do not assume KB5071959 will fix a different or later wizard error. If it does not match your issue, record the exact message and update history and use Microsoft’s current Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Confirm enrollment before troubleshooting missing security updates
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and confirm that Windows reports ESU enrollment.
- If you paid for enrollment, check the Microsoft account’s Order History as an additional confirmation.
- Do not treat KB5126256 appearing in installed updates as proof of enrollment; it is only the preparation package.
- Once enrollment is confirmed, check Windows Update for available updates and note any error code or failed update.
After successful enrollment, eligible critical and important security updates are delivered through Windows Update as they become available. ESU does not include feature improvements, non-security updates, design changes, or technical support. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and consumer ESU coverage runs through October 12, 2027, according to Microsoft’s consumer ESU program page.

Use Windows Update’s error details and update history to narrow the issue. Microsoft lists driver problems, insufficient free disk space, and other device issues among possible causes of update failures. Those possibilities are not a diagnosis for any particular PC; the error code, Windows edition and build, update history, enrollment status, and management status are needed to investigate further. - Record the Windows edition, version, and build.
- Write down the full error code or message and the update that failed.
- Review Windows Update history, including whether the latest servicing stack and prerequisite updates installed.
- Check whether the PC is domain joined, Microsoft Entra joined, or MDM enrolled, and whether Windows reports ESU enrollment.
If the PC cannot use consumer ESU
Microsoft recommends checking whether the PC can upgrade to Windows 11; if it cannot remain supported, consider a supported replacement PC. That is an alternative for devices that cannot use an appropriate supported path, not a required step for a PC that qualifies for ESU.
