Window AC vs. Portable AC: Which Is Better for a Small Apartment?

A window AC is usually the more efficient choice when it is allowed and fits safely. A portable AC works when it can exhaust outdoors through an approved opening.

For most small apartments, a properly sized window air conditioner is the better choice for efficiency and value—if your building allows it and the window can support it safely. Choose a portable AC when a window unit is prohibited or will not fit, but only if you can route its hot-air exhaust outdoors through an approved opening.

Check installation rules and fit first. Then compare room size, current model ratings, noise information, and your electricity rate. Neither appliance is a good fit if it cannot be installed or vented correctly.

How window and portable ACs compare

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) notes that these products differ in how they are installed, used, and provide cooling. Its 2021 rulemaking analysis gives broad expected ranges for the two types; these are historical technology ranges, not specifications for every model sold today.

Factor Window AC Portable AC
DOE expected capacity range (2021) 5,000–35,000 Btu/h 2,500–10,000 Btu/h
DOE expected efficiency range, CEER (2021) 9–15 Btu/Wh 4–8 Btu/Wh
Installation Fits in a window or through-wall opening; requires permission, compatible dimensions, secure support, and effective sealing. Sits inside the room and needs a duct to carry hot exhaust outdoors through an approved opening.
Room and heat impact Frees floor space. Side curtains or insulating materials are common, although a window bracket itself may provide little insulation. Occupies floor space. Its hot exhaust duct is in the cooled space, and DOE says the installation can create different unwanted heat transfer and outdoor-air infiltration than a room AC.
Moving and seasonal handling May need to be removed or stored seasonally, depending on the installation. Can be moved, but still needs the exhaust setup each time it is used.
Noise Noise varies by model. ENERGY STAR says variable-speed compressors can enable quieter cooling; U-shaped or saddle designs place the compressor outside the room in most cases. The DOE comparison does not establish an across-the-board decibel ranking against window units. Check model-specific sound information and account for the appliance being inside the room.
Running cost Depends on the specific unit, operating hours, and electricity price. Also depends on the specific unit, operating hours, and electricity price.

When a window AC is the better choice

Favor a window unit when your lease or building policy permits it, the window is compatible, and you can install the unit with secure support and a good seal. The DOE’s broad 2021 ranges show why window units often have the advantage on capacity and efficiency, but a particular model’s current ratings matter more than a category average.

Window units also preserve floor area. That can matter in a studio or small bedroom where a portable unit would take up space. Consider seasonal removal and storage, and whether the unit’s installation parts fit your window style.

When a portable AC makes more sense

A portable unit is a practical alternative when building rules or window design rule out a window AC. It avoids mounting the appliance in the window, but it is not vent-free: the hot exhaust must reach outdoors through an opening using an arrangement approved by the manufacturer.

Before buying, check that the exhaust hose reaches the opening without an unsuitable extension and that the supplied or compatible kit can seal the gap. Poorly fitting venting can undermine cooling by allowing unwanted heat transfer or outdoor air infiltration. The unit also uses floor space, and moving it does not remove the need to set up its exhaust.

How to choose a size and compare models

  1. Measure the area you need to cool. Use ENERGY STAR’s room-area guidance and the manufacturer’s sizing instructions. ENERGY STAR cautions that “bigger is not always better!” An oversized unit can cost more, waste energy, and cool the room before removing enough humidity.
  2. Confirm the installation route. For a window AC, check the lease and building policy, window style and dimensions, included brackets or panels, and safe support. For a portable AC, verify an approved outdoor exhaust route and compatible sealing kit.
  3. Compare specific models. Check cooling capacity, current efficiency information such as CEER where provided, dimensions, sound specifications, warranty, and expected seasonal hours. Do not treat the DOE’s 2021 category ranges as a rating for a current product.
  4. Estimate your own electricity cost. Use the model’s consumption information, your expected operating hours, and your local electricity rate. ENERGY STAR certification and higher efficiency may help reduce use, but your bill depends on your actual conditions.
  5. Seal gaps without compromising safety. Use compatible installation materials or weatherstripping if needed. Do not weaken the unit’s anchoring or block required airflow.

What the energy-cost examples do—and do not—show

DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) room-AC guidance, updated December 2024, illustrates the effect of efficiency for a 12,000 Btu/h room AC. Under its assumptions of 750 operating hours per year and an electricity rate of 11.1¢/kWh, the ENERGY STAR example used 612 kWh annually and estimated $67 in annual energy cost; the less-efficient comparison used 826 kWh and estimated $91. These are modeled scenario figures, not current product prices or a prediction of a household’s bill. The guidance applies to window and through-wall room ACs, not portable units.

DOE also reported in 2023 that typical new room air conditioners used 39% less energy than their 1990 counterparts. Its estimate that the 2023 standards would save consumers about $1.5 billion per year was a projection of the rule’s expected impact, not an observed saving for an individual household.

Check the current rules and product information

Federal requirements and certification status can change. DOE’s portable-AC page says compliance with its current standards is required beginning January 10, 2025, and records a May 16, 2025 notice proposing withdrawal of DOE’s prior determination that portable ACs qualify as covered products under EPCA. Consult the DOE portable AC page for current regulatory status. For room ACs, DOE’s purchasing guidance is for window and through-wall products; check ENERGY STAR’s current product finder and the manufacturer’s specifications for a specific model.
