Not necessarily: a window AC’s electricity use depends on its input power and how long it runs. As a U.S. comparison, the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) estimates 612 kWh per year for an example ENERGY STAR room AC and 826 kWh per year for a less-efficient example. Both figures assume a 12,000 Btu/h unit runs 750 hours a year, so they are standardized comparison figures—not a forecast of your household bill.
How much electricity does a window air conditioner use?
There is no single kWh figure for all window ACs. A unit’s capacity in Btu/h describes its cooling output, not the electricity it draws. To estimate energy use, you need its input power and operating time.

FEMP’s 2024 guidance compares two 12,000 Btu/h room air conditioners at 750 operating hours per year:
| FEMP example | Annual energy use | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR model | 612 kWh/year | 12,000 Btu/h; 750 operating hours/year |
| Less-efficient model | 826 kWh/year | 12,000 Btu/h; 750 operating hours/year |
These are useful for comparing those examples under the same stated assumption. They do not establish what a different model—or the same model in a different home—will use. Runtime changes with weather, thermostat setting, room conditions, and how often the compressor cycles. FEMP treats room air conditioners, including window units, as a separate category from central air conditioners.

How can you estimate the cost to run a window AC?
Use the AC’s rated input power or model documentation, your best estimate of its actual operating hours, and the electricity price on your bill:
- Energy: input power in kW × operating hours = kWh.
- Cost: kWh × your electricity price per kWh = estimated cost.
For example, if a unit draws 1 kW while running and operates for 5 hours, it uses 5 kWh during that time. Multiply 5 kWh by your own rate to estimate the energy charge. This simple estimate does not account for changes in power draw or other billing components.
FEMP’s example cost calculation assumes 11.1 cents per kWh, based on federal-facility electricity data as of July 2024. That is an illustrative rate, not a typical or guaranteed household tariff; use your own bill’s rate instead.

How do you compare window AC efficiency?
Compare units that meet a similar cooling need, rather than choosing by capacity or an efficiency label alone. Check these details in the product documentation and current ENERGY STAR listings:
- Cooling capacity: compare Btu/h values so you are evaluating units intended for similar cooling demands.
- CEER: the combined energy-efficiency measure used in ENERGY STAR criteria and listings. A higher CEER is a useful efficiency comparison when capacities and product types are comparable.
- Annual energy use: check the kWh figure and the operating assumptions behind it.
- Exact model and current certification: verify the model number and certification in the live listing, since listings and product availability can change.
ENERGY STAR says qualifying room air conditioners are 19–36% more energy efficient than minimum federal standards, depending on product category. That range compares qualifying products with a defined baseline; it is not a guaranteed savings percentage against any particular older unit. See ENERGY STAR room air conditioner criteria.
The live ENERGY STAR Most Efficient room air conditioner listing includes window models, with examples at CEER 16.0 and 562.5 kWh/year for listed 12,000 Btu/h products. These are model-specific listing values, not a universal consumption figure or a promise that a model will remain listed or available.

What do federal efficiency standards mean for household bills?
Federal efficiency standards set a product-wide baseline; they do not predict an individual household’s savings. In a March 23, 2023 announcement about finalized standards for room air conditioners and portable air cleaners, DOE projected approximately $1.5 billion per year in consumer electricity-bill savings and 106 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions avoided over 30 years. Those are aggregate projections, not a household-level estimate or a claim about one window AC.

For your own expected cost, the relevant inputs remain the specific model’s power use, its actual runtime, and your electricity rate. DOE’s room-air-conditioner guidance is available at FEMP’s room air conditioner purchasing guidance; its standards announcement is at DOE’s March 2023 announcement.
