To find what is taking up disk space with WinDirStat, scan the drive or folder that is running low, sort the results by size or open Largest Files, then use the treemap to connect large files to their locations. Check each candidate in File Explorer before removing it; a large file is not automatically safe to delete.
Choose the drive or folder to scan
Open WinDirStat and select the drive or folder where you see the space shortage. The project describes scans of individual drives and folders, as well as multiple folders, network shares, and MTP devices. Starting with the affected location keeps the results focused. Wait for the scan to finish before interpreting the results. WinDirStat presents disk usage in sortable lists, extension statistics, a Largest Files view, and an interactive treemap.
Find the largest files and folders
- Sort the file listing by size to bring large items into view, or use the Largest Files view for a quick first pass.
- Select an item in the results. WinDirStat locates it in the treemap so you can connect the listing entry with its visual block and folder location.
- Check extension statistics to see which file types contribute to usage. Treat this as a clue for investigation, not a deletion recommendation: file type alone does not establish whether an item is safe to remove.
WinDirStat also describes searching by file name, size, type, or owner; detecting duplicates; and comparing logical and physical size. These features can help narrow down what to inspect when the largest-items view does not answer your question.

Read the treemap
Each rectangle represents a file. Its area corresponds to file size, its color indicates file type, and its nesting shows where it sits in the folder structure. A large rectangle is therefore a useful lead, while the surrounding layout helps you understand the file’s place in the scanned folders. The official feature description explains this visualization.
Use the treemap together with the listing rather than treating color as a safety signal. It identifies file type, not whether Windows, an application, or you still need the file.

Review files before cleanup
When you find a possible candidate, review it in File Explorer before taking action. Confirm its path and what it belongs to. Do not delete an unfamiliar system, application, or personal file just because it is large. If you are unsure what an item does, leave it in place until you can verify its purpose.

Install the edition that fits your Windows device
The official WinDirStat download page lists Windows x64, x86, and ARM64 installers, portable ZIP and 7z archives, a Microsoft Store option, and package-manager commands for winget, Chocolatey, and Scoop. Choose the package that matches your device and preferred installation method.
The project’s resources page lists Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11, plus Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, as tested targets. It says other versions may work but are unsupported. Check the official resources for compatibility details.

WinDirStat is described by the project as free and open-source software. Its download page and resources page give different GPL license-version statements, so check the license for the specific release if the exact terms matter. The project’s blog announced version 2.2.0 on January 6, 2025, but that announcement does not establish which version is current now. See the official blog and the download page for release information.
