Whether your Steam games will run on Linux depends on the games, Proton version, hardware, and settings—not on a blanket compatibility promise. A credible claim that “every game” in one library was tested needs a dated game list, a reproducible setup, and outcomes that distinguish failed launches from games that ran with limitations. Without those details, there is no basis for reporting a personal test result or calling it a surprise.
What Steam gaming on Linux actually supports
Steam Play can let Windows-only games run on Linux, but “potentially work” is not the same as a guarantee. Steam Support explains the feature and how to select a compatibility tool in a game’s properties: Steam Play support.

Valve’s Proton is a compatibility tool for the Steam client that uses Wine to run Windows games on Linux. Valve recommends that most users use the Proton version provided through the Steam client. Compatibility can differ by game and configuration, and can change as Proton, games, drivers, and anti-cheat support change. Valve’s Proton project
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat “every game in my library” should mean
A library-wide result is meaningful only when readers can see what was counted. Define whether the audit included every owned game, installed games only, or a subset; note excluded titles and the reason for each exclusion. Then list the titles and record an outcome per game. A missing result is unknown, not a failure.

Separate at least these outcomes: launched and playable under the test conditions; launched with a specific limitation; and failed to launch or reach gameplay. Also identify what was actually checked. A brief launch is not evidence that multiplayer, anti-cheat, saves, controllers, cutscenes, or extended play work.
How to document a reproducible Linux test
Report the test environment and method alongside the results. A useful record includes:

- Powerful Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT 3.6GHz (4.6GHz Turbo) 6-Core 12-Thread processor brings faster response time to easily handle multi-threaded tasks
- Motherboard Specification: MSI A520M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and expandability for your computing needs
- Integrated Graphics: AMD Radeon Vega Graphics (CPU Integration) enables you to play 1080P mainstream games at quality frame rates
- Memory and Storage: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM paired with 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD for fast multitasking and quick data access
- Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation
- Linux distribution and release, CPU, GPU, and graphics driver.
- Steam client channel and the Proton version used for each game.
- Whether native Linux builds were preferred or Proton was forced.
- Test date, time spent per game, and the threshold used to call a game playable.
- Whether launchers, cutscenes, multiplayer, anti-cheat, saves, and controllers were tested.
- Per-game outcomes, including limitations and any changes needed to make a game run.
Do not combine distinct test conditions into one compatibility percentage. If the setup or Proton version changes, record the new run separately; otherwise, readers cannot tell whether a changed result reflects the game, software, or hardware.
How to use Steam Deck ratings without overreading them
Valve’s Steam Deck categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. They address the Deck experience: input, display legibility, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and anti-cheat. Verified means a title works well out of the box on the Deck; Playable may require adjustments; Unsupported means it is currently nonfunctional on the Deck; Unknown means it has not yet been checked. Valve notes that review is ongoing and compatibility can change. Steam Deck compatibility review

Those labels are useful context, not a certification for a different desktop Linux PC. A desktop has different hardware and may use a different display, controller, driver, or software setup. A Deck rating therefore cannot substitute for testing on the machine described in a library audit.

ProtonDB aggregates community-submitted reports about games on Linux and Steam Deck. These reports can help explain a result or suggest a configuration to investigate, but they are not the author’s test results and do not establish how a game behaves on every system. Keep community reports separate from the audit’s own observations.

What a surprising result must be compared against
“Shocked me” needs a stated baseline. Explain what you expected before testing and why—for example, a documented expectation or your previous experience—then show the actual outcomes against that expectation. A raw count without the library size, exclusions, definitions, and conditions cannot establish how unusual the result is.

Valve’s SteamOS page describes SteamOS as Linux-based and says Proton runs over 18,000 titles “last we checked,” but the page does not give an explicit check date for that changing count. It is not a current, independently measured estimate of the share of any particular library that works on a particular PC. Valve’s SteamOS gaming page
