No: Sony has said purchased PS4 and PS5 games do not need recurring online check-ins. In a statement reported on April 30, 2026, a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said a one-time online check confirms a game’s license, “after which no further check-ins are required.” That addresses the widely discussed “30-day license check” concern, but Sony’s public support pages do not specify the reported check’s rollout, eligibility, or exact timing. A lock icon can also have ordinary troubleshooting causes; it does not by itself show that a purchase was revoked.
What did Sony say about the PS5 license check?
On April 30, 2026, TechRadar reported Sony’s statement to GameSpot: “Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are required.” TechRadar’s report and a Tom’s Hardware report both reproduce the clarification.

The statement is the clearest public answer to reports and user concerns about a recurring “30-day license check”: Sony described a one-time confirmation, not a monthly requirement. It does not, however, explain which purchases or system versions are covered, when the check occurs, or how the process is implemented. PlayStation’s support documentation separately explains license restoration and server-confirmation errors, but does not provide those technical details.
Will digital PS5 games stop working if you stay offline?
Sony’s reported clarification says no further check-ins are required after the one-time license confirmation. It is not a blanket guarantee that every digital game will work in every offline situation: a game may need an initial online check, and an individual title may depend on online services or other network features. The available statement does not spell out the timing or conditions of the one-time check, so do not assume that a newly acquired game will always launch offline before its license has been confirmed.

Access also depends on the account and entitlement. PlayStation’s US terms say access to digital products may be lost if the purchasing account is deleted or suspended. Terms can differ by region, and that account-related caveat is distinct from the reported check-in issue. PlayStation’s US Terms of Service and Software Application EULA describes the applicable terms.
Why is there a lock on a purchased game?
A padlock does not, on its own, prove that PlayStation revoked a purchase. PlayStation lists a lock icon or missing game among the situations where restoring licenses may help, and says the symptom is not necessarily related to a PlayStation Plus membership expiring. Check that the console is using the account that acquired the game, then try the official restoration steps.

Restore licenses on PS5 or PS4
- On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Try launching the game again. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect your data.

Check the console’s offline-sharing setting
If the problem continues, PlayStation recommends checking that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the PS5, or that the PS4 is activated as the primary console. These settings affect how purchased content is shared and accessed on that console.

What does error CE-109258-5 mean?
PlayStation says this PS5 error can mean the console failed to connect to a server and could not confirm license information. That is a server-confirmation problem; it is not, by itself, evidence that the purchase was withdrawn. PlayStation’s CE-109258-5 support page gives these steps:
- Check PlayStation service status.
- Restart the PS5 and your router or modem. After restarting the network equipment, wait at least five minutes before trying again.
- Restore licenses using the PS5 path above, then retry later if the error persists.
If the game still appears unavailable, contact PlayStation Support with the purchasing account and purchase details, the error code, and when you attempted access. Keeping timestamps can help explain the failure.

Does a disc copy guarantee offline access?
No. A disc copy is not a guarantee that a game will work completely offline: a particular title may require online services, or some content may be downloaded or served online. PlayStation’s US terms make a narrower point: a suspended console may still play disc games that run without PlayStation Services. That does not establish that every disc game will work in that situation.
Sony has announced that production of physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will stop beginning in January 2028. The announcement says this change does not affect titles released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format. It is a change to new-game disc production, not a statement that existing discs or earlier releases are being withdrawn. Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement provides the details.
