Some of your current smart-home devices will work with Apple Home, but compatibility depends on the exact model and the route it uses: direct HomeKit support, supported Matter support, or a manufacturer bridge that explicitly lists the device. A Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Matter label alone does not guarantee that an accessory will appear in Apple Home or expose every feature.
How to check whether a device is compatible
- Find the exact model number. A brand or product-family name is not enough; models within the same range can differ.
- Check the maker’s current support page or manual. Look for Apple Home or HomeKit compatibility, or a Matter claim for that exact model. Apple recommends checking whether setup also requires extra hardware, a software update, or steps in the manufacturer’s app (Apple’s accessory setup guidance).
- If the device is not directly supported, check for a documented bridge. Confirm that the manufacturer names both the bridge and your particular device as compatible, and verify which controls and features the bridge exposes.
- Check network and hub requirements. Thread, Wi-Fi band, operating-system version, and remote-access needs can affect setup and use.
Three ways devices can connect to Apple Home
HomeKit
Accessories designed for HomeKit can be added through the Home app’s setup flow. Apple’s HomeKit framework coordinates and controls supported accessories from multiple vendors (Apple Developer: HomeKit).

Matter
Apple supports Matter accessories, which can be added through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app. After setup, supported Matter accessories can be controlled through Apple Home surfaces such as the Home app and Siri. Apple’s published Works with Apple Home guidance lists Matter categories including air purifiers, blinds and shades, bridges, fans, lights, locks, outlets, robot vacuum cleaners, sensors, switches, and thermostats (Apple Developer: HomeKit).

A manufacturer bridge
Some makers offer a bridge that connects selected accessories to Apple Home. A bridge is not a universal converter for older smart-home equipment. Apple lists Matter bridges as a supported category, but the maker must explicitly document support for your accessory and the specific bridge (Apple Developer: HomeKit; Apple’s accessory setup guidance).
Requirements that can change the answer
Thread and the home hub
A Thread accessory needs a suitable Thread-enabled home hub or compatible Thread border router, as required by the accessory and its maker. Apple’s setup guidance names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and compatible third-party Thread border routers in its Thread setup context. Check the exact hub generation and the manufacturer’s current instructions (Apple: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub).

iOS, a hub, and remote features
Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a home hub; Apple recommends a hub for the best experience (Apple’s accessory setup guidance). Local pairing and control are not the same as hub-enabled features: remote access, automations, and notifications may have additional requirements. Apple’s packaging guidance distinguishes these functions, so check the requirements for the feature you plan to use (Apple Developer: HomeKit; Apple: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub).
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Bluetooth should be enabled during setup. Some accessories do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi; if setup reports that the network is incompatible, check whether the accessory requires a 2.4 GHz network and connect your iPhone or iPad accordingly (Apple’s accessory setup guidance).

Manufacturer app, firmware, and Matter pairing
An accessory may need to be set up in its maker’s app, updated, or paired with extra hardware before it works with Home. If a Matter accessory was first paired through another app, Apple’s instructions describe generating a pairing code in that app and then adding the accessory to Home; Matter pairings are stored using iCloud Keychain and can be managed in iOS Settings (Apple’s setup guidance for Matter accessories; Apple’s accessory setup guidance).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between keeping, bridging, or replacing a device
| Approach | What to verify | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the device and add it directly | Exact-model HomeKit or Matter support; required firmware, app setup, network, and hub; whether the controls you need are available in Apple Home. | Least hardware change if supported, but a compatible category or brand does not prove exact-model or feature support. |
| Use a manufacturer bridge | The maker’s compatibility list names both your accessory and the specific bridge; required setup and which functions the bridge exposes. | May preserve existing equipment, but compatibility is limited to documented combinations and features. |
| Replace the device | The replacement’s exact-model Apple Home or Matter support, plus network and hub requirements. | Requires replacing hardware, but avoids relying on a bridge for the old device. |
Compare those checks with the cost and effort of adding a supported bridge versus replacing the accessory. Apple’s compatibility guidance is not an exhaustive model-by-model list, so confirm feature-level support with the manufacturer.

- Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
- Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
- Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
- Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
- Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.
Troubleshoot “can’t add a smart home accessory to the Home app”
- “Accessory is not supported”: Check the maker’s app for a firmware update and confirm that the exact model is documented as compatible.
- “Network is incompatible”: Verify the accessory’s Wi-Fi requirements. If it does not support 5 GHz, try setup with the iPhone or iPad on a 2.4 GHz network.
- Pairing does not complete: Enable Bluetooth, complete any required manufacturer-app setup, and check whether the accessory needs a bridge, Thread border router, or compatible hub.
- An accessory stops responding: Apple recommends restarting the accessory and any bridge, checking for updates, and contacting the manufacturer if it remains unresponsive (Apple’s accessory setup guidance; Apple’s Matter setup guidance).
