How to Set Up EmuDeck on a Steam Machine

EmuDeck supports SteamOS, but its published setup guide is written for Steam Deck. Here’s how to install it, organize your own files, and add selected games to Steam on a Steam Machine.

You can use EmuDeck on a Steam Machine through its SteamOS workflow: install EmuDeck, add your own game and BIOS files, then use Steam ROM Manager to add selected games to Steam. Valve identifies SteamOS as the Steam Machine operating system, and EmuDeck lists SteamOS as supported. However, EmuDeck’s published SteamOS installation guide is written for Steam Deck, so confirm the Steam Machine’s current route to Desktop Mode and treat removable-storage behavior as unverified.

Before you start

  • Use files you are authorized to use. EmuDeck configures emulators; it does not provide game ROMs or BIOS files. Laws vary by country. EmuDeck’s overview explains its role and file requirements.
  • Decide where files will live. The installer lets you choose a storage location. EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide says SD cards used with its workflow should be formatted as ext4 or btrfs. It does not establish how external storage behaves on a Steam Machine.
  • Check the machine’s menus. Valve identifies SteamOS as the Steam Machine operating system, but EmuDeck’s setup instructions use Steam Deck-specific navigation and controls. Use the Steam Machine’s own current interface to find Desktop Mode rather than assuming the Deck button sequence applies.

See Valve’s Steam Machine documentation and EmuDeck’s SteamOS installation guide.

Choose an installation and library setup

Choice What it does Best fit
Easy Mode Uses the installer’s recommended setup path. New users who want fewer decisions.
Custom Mode Exposes individual options, including storage location, emulator selection, controller layout, display options, RetroAchievements, and cloud saves. Users who want to configure specific components.
Steam Library shortcuts Steam ROM Manager adds selected parsed games as non-Steam shortcuts. Users who want chosen games to appear individually in Steam.
EmulationStation-DE Provides a unified emulation frontend; EmuDeck offers an EmulationStation-DE parser. Users who prefer a central interface over individual Steam entries.

These options are described in the EmuDeck install options and SteamOS guide. You can also limit Steam ROM Manager to selected system parsers rather than adding every supported game type.

Install EmuDeck

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Use the Steam Machine’s available system menu. EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide describes this step with Steam Deck-specific directions, so the exact navigation may differ.
  2. Download the installer from EmuDeck’s official SteamOS guide and run it from the desktop environment, following the prompts.
  3. Choose Easy or Custom setup. Select the storage location and integration options that suit your setup. If you choose removable storage, first ensure it meets EmuDeck’s stated ext4 or btrfs requirement for SD cards; Steam Machine compatibility beyond that is not confirmed in the published guide.
  4. Complete the installer prompts. The selected setup determines which emulators and related tools are configured.

Add your game and BIOS files

EmuDeck’s SteamOS guide uses Emulation/roms for game files and Emulation/bios for BIOS files. Put each game in the matching system subfolder; folder names, supported formats, and BIOS requirements vary by system. Check the SteamOS guide’s system cheat-sheet links for those details instead of guessing a folder name or file format.

Add selected games to Steam

  1. Open Steam ROM Manager through EmuDeck. Steam closes while Steam ROM Manager is open.
  2. Select the parsers you want. A parser determines which systems or entries are scanned. Choose only the ones you intend to add; the EmulationStation-DE parser is available if you use that frontend.
  3. Preview and parse the list. Review the entries before committing them so you can avoid adding unwanted shortcuts.
  4. Save apps to Steam. Steam ROM Manager creates non-Steam shortcuts for the selected parsed games, emulators, or tools.
  5. Close Steam ROM Manager and return to the Steam interface. The guide documents returning to Game Mode for Steam Deck; use the equivalent option available on your Steam Machine.

When Steam ROM Manager is open, EmuDeck documents controls in “Lizard Mode”: R2 acts as left-click and L2 as right-click. These labels are documented for Steam Deck, so do not assume the same mapping applies to every Steam Machine controller setup. See the Steam ROM Manager documentation.

Troubleshoot missing entries or parsers

  • A game does not appear in the preview: Check that it is in the correct system subfolder under Emulation/roms, and verify its format against that system’s cheat sheet.
  • A game launches to an error or will not start: Check whether that system requires BIOS files and whether they are in the appropriate location under Emulation/bios. EmuDeck’s system-specific documentation lists the relevant requirements.
  • Expected parsers are missing: EmuDeck says its Steam ROM Manager configurations may not have been selected. Use the EmuDeck application’s Manage Emulators section to reset the Steam ROM Manager configurations, then reopen Steam ROM Manager. See EmuDeck Application 101.
  • Removable storage is not available as expected: The cited EmuDeck guidance gives an SD-card filesystem requirement but does not confirm Steam Machine external-drive setup or behavior. Verify the device’s current SteamOS storage options rather than assuming the Deck instructions transfer directly.
