Some iPhone 17 Pro cases may fit the iPhone 18 Pro, but don’t assume yours will. Apple lists the same body dimensions for both phones, while a 2026 MacRumors report says Apple considers the older cases incompatible because of a small camera-plateau difference. Check the specific case maker’s iPhone 18 Pro listing before relying on a 17 Pro case.
Why an iPhone 17 Pro case might fit
Apple’s published dimensions match: both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro are 150.0 mm tall, 71.9 mm wide, and 8.75 mm deep. Apple’s iPhone comparison lists those measurements for both models; the iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications identify that model as introduced in 2026 and repeat the same dimensions.

Matching height, width, and depth make cross-generation reuse plausible, but those figures describe the phones’ bodies, not whether a particular case fits. A case also needs the right camera opening and aligned buttons and ports.

A MacRumors report dated September 18, 2026 attributes a negative compatibility answer to Apple and cites a slightly thicker camera plateau on the iPhone 18 Pro. The report gives the plateau measurements as 11.5 mm versus 11.4 mm, attributed to John Gruber’s account of Apple’s answer; these are reported figures, not an Apple-published compatibility specification.

The same report quotes Gruber saying, “In my personal testing, my iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro models perfectly, as did iPhone 18 Pro cases on iPhone 17 Pro models.” That is one person’s reported testing, not a universal test or certification. The evidence therefore points to possible fit for some cases, alongside Apple’s reported position that the older cases are not compatible.
How to decide whether to reuse your case
- Check the case maker’s model listing. Look for explicit support for iPhone 18 Pro, not just iPhone 17 Pro. A case listed for both models is a safer choice than inferring compatibility from the phones’ dimensions.
- Check the fit carefully. Confirm that the camera opening, buttons, and ports align, and that the case does not press against or obstruct any of them.
- Keep return protection in mind. If the maker does not list iPhone 18 Pro, verify the seller’s return policy before depending on the older case.
These checks apply to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro only. The Pro Max models are separate; a fit claim for one size does not establish fit for the other.
