Epic has not announced that it will remove building from Fortnite’s main Battle Royale mode. Its official announcements instead describe building and Zero Build as coexisting formats. That is evidence of Epic’s announced approach at those points in time—not a promise that the modes or rules will never change.
What Epic has announced about building
Epic introduced Zero Build in March 2022 as a Battle Royale mode without player construction. The announcement described it as an alternative format, not the removal of building from Battle Royale. Epic’s Zero Build announcement also said players could find the mode in Discover as Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads at launch. Those are launch-era details, not confirmation that every playlist remains available today.

In December 2024, Epic announced Fortnite OG would return and “be here to stay.” It said Solos and Squads would be available, along with Zero Build, and that building mechanics would be uniform with Battle Royale as it was then. This shows Epic described building and no-building options within the OG experience at that time; it does not establish what Epic will do in the future. See Epic’s Fortnite OG announcement.

Epic described the Overshield as an added defensive layer: “Without building, all players have the recharging Overshield as your first line of defense in Zero Build.” The same launch announcement highlighted Ascenders, Mantling, and sprinting between cover. These mechanics help explain how Zero Build was designed to work without player-built defenses; they should not be read as a current, exhaustive list of mode features.

Could Epic remove building later?
It is possible for a game’s rules and playlists to change, but the official announcements cited here do not reveal a future decision to remove building from the main Battle Royale mode. They establish that Epic launched Zero Build and later described it alongside a building-enabled Fortnite OG experience. Whether Epic will change that arrangement remains unknown; presenting removal—or permanent coexistence—as confirmed would go beyond what those announcements say.

Epic’s news index showed ongoing announcements as of October 3, 2026, but an active news feed alone does not indicate a building-removal plan.
