Yes. Apple says an iPhone alarm plays through both the iPhone’s built-in speakers and connected headphones, so connecting AirPods should not silence it. Apple also says alarms sound in Silent mode and while Do Not Disturb or another Focus is active. The guide describes connected headphones generally; it does not separately guarantee identical behavior for every AirPods model or software configuration.
What happens when AirPods are connected?
Apple’s iPhone guide says an alarm plays at a set volume through both the iPhone’s built-in speakers and connected headphones. AirPods are wireless headphones, so that guidance applies: do not assume the alarm will be private to your ears just because you are wearing them. Apple’s iPhone alarm guide also says alarms sound when Silent mode is enabled or Do Not Disturb or another Focus is active.

Check the alarm sound and volume
If you are concerned the alarm will be too quiet, confirm that it has an audible sound selected and check the alarm volume in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Apple says you can turn off Match Ringtone Volume and adjust the volume slider, or leave that setting on. With Change with Buttons enabled, the iPhone’s volume buttons can adjust the alarm volume. Test your own setup before relying on it
- On your iPhone, open Clock > Alarms and check that the alarm is enabled and has an audible sound.
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and set an alarm volume you can hear.
- With AirPods connected, set a test alarm for a few minutes ahead. Check where you hear it and whether its volume is adequate.
This is a practical check, not an Apple requirement. It lets you confirm the behavior of your particular iPhone, AirPods, and software combination rather than relying on assumptions.

Why some reports describe different routing
In an October 23, 2025 article, The Mac Observer reported complaints from some iOS 26 users that alarms played through connected earphones rather than the iPhone speaker. That secondary report does not establish how common the behavior was, which configurations were affected, or whether it remains present. It does not replace Apple’s general guidance that alarms play through both the built-in speakers and headphones.
