A file available only at /api is not at the documented verification URL. Serve the same valid association JSON directly from the required well-known path, then verify the response and app details.
Why the /api URL is not enough
For each hostname covered by a qualifying app intent filter, Android retrieves the Digital Asset Links file from that hostname’s fixed path: https://<hostname>/.well-known/assetlinks.json. The App Links verification flow does not use a custom API path in place of that endpoint. See Android’s App Links verification guidance.

Your deployment can keep its API route, but the required well-known URL must itself return the association file. You can place a static JSON file there or configure your server or deployment routing to serve that JSON at that path. Android specifies the required URL and response behavior, not a particular web-server rewrite or framework implementation.
What the well-known endpoint must return
- A successful response over HTTPS.
- The JSON directly, without an HTTP redirect.
- A valid JSON document served with the
Content-Type: application/jsonheader. - An association statement for the correct Android app.
These response requirements are described in Android’s website association configuration guide and App Links troubleshooting guidance. A redirect from the well-known URL—even one that eventually reaches /api—does not meet the documented no-redirect requirement.

Check that the association identifies the release app
The JSON statement needs the delegate_permission/common.handle_all_urls relation, the android_app target namespace, the app’s package name, and the SHA-256 fingerprint of its signing certificate. Use the real values for your app rather than copying example values from documentation. The configuration guide shows the statement structure and permits multiple fingerprints when more than one signing identity must be supported.
If you use Play App Signing, compare the JSON fingerprint with the app-signing certificate shown in Play Console. A locally generated keystore fingerprint may not match the certificate used for distributed releases. Android explains the fingerprint requirement in its configuration guide.

Test the exact URL and then check the app
- Request
https://<hostname>/.well-known/assetlinks.jsonover the public internet, using the exact hostname in the app’s intent filter. - Check the response status, HTTPS connection,
Content-Type, JSON validity, and whether the server returns the file directly instead of redirecting. - Compare the JSON package name and certificate fingerprint with the release app’s identity.
- Inspect the app manifest for a qualifying
VIEWintent filter andandroid:autoVerify="true". Check its host and path rules if matching links still open in a browser. - Run Android’s App Links testing workflow and inspect the reported domain verification state.
Check every configured hostname independently. For example, if the app declares both example.com and www.example.com, test the well-known URL on each host; a correct response on one does not establish that the other is configured.

App Links verification is available on Android 6.0 (API level 23) and later devices with Google services. Dynamic App Links are supported on Android 15 (API level 35) and later devices with Google services; their server-side rules cannot expand beyond the scope declared in the app manifest.
