Can one VGA port connect two monitors?
Not as two independent desktop screens through a simple VGA Y splitter. The splitter duplicates one video signal, so both monitors show the same image. Microsoft explicitly notes that a display splitter duplicates the signal rather than creating independent signals in its Windows external-monitor troubleshooting guide.

If you want separate content on each screen, the computer’s graphics hardware must support two displays at once. A computer with one external display output may not support a second monitor directly, and two physical sockets do not necessarily mean both can operate simultaneously. Check the computer or graphics adapter specifications for the supported display count and output combinations.
Choose the connection that matches your setup

VGA is an analog 15-pin connector. Your computer and monitors may instead use HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, or a mix of these. If the ports do not match, a compatible adapter may be needed; a cable or passive conversion alone does not add another independent output. ASUS’s external-monitor connection guide also cautions that USB-C video capability varies by device.

Connect the monitors and extend the Windows desktop
- Identify the video outputs on the computer and the inputs on both monitors. Check the computer or graphics adapter documentation for supported display count and output combinations.
- If the computer has two supported independent outputs, connect one monitor to each using compatible cables or adapters. If it has only one suitable output, check the computer maker’s guidance for a compatible dock or USB display adapter before buying one.
- Turn on both monitors and select the correct input on each monitor if it does not switch automatically.
- In Windows, press Windows+P and select Extend for separate desktop space. Choose Duplicate if you want both screens to show the same image.
- Open Settings > System > Display. If a monitor is missing, use Multiple displays > Detect. Drag the display diagrams to match the monitors’ physical positions.
Microsoft documents these display-mode and detection controls for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its monitor troubleshooting guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the available controls may still be present, but Microsoft no longer provides standard support for that operating system.
Why do both monitors show the same thing?
If you connected both displays with a VGA splitter, the duplicated image is expected: the splitter is sending the same signal to both. Windows cannot turn that one signal into two independent display outputs. To use different content on each screen, connect the displays to separate supported outputs or use a compatible dock or USB display adapter.

If you have separate outputs but still see the same content, press Windows+P and choose Extend rather than Duplicate.

Troubleshoot a blank or missing monitor
- Check that each cable is fully seated and that the monitor is set to the input connected to the computer.
- Try a known-good cable or another available output. Testing the monitor with another computer can help isolate whether the problem is the monitor or its connection.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect.
- Confirm the graphics adapter supports the number of displays and the output combination you are using.
- If the setup worked before but stopped, Microsoft lists resetting the graphics driver with Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B or restarting the PC as troubleshooting steps. Driver rollback or reinstallation may also be appropriate.
Exact compatibility depends on the computer, graphics adapter, dock or USB adapter, drivers, and monitors. Check the relevant manufacturers’ specifications for the particular setup rather than assuming that a port or adapter will support a second screen.
