Yes. A PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD can work in a compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, but it will run at PCIe 4.0 speeds rather than its full Gen 5 interface capability. Before installing one, confirm that the specific motherboard socket supports PCIe NVMe drives and that the SSD physically fits.
What happens to speed in a PCIe 4.0 slot?
The slot limits the connection: a Gen 5 SSD in a Gen 4 slot negotiates a PCIe 4.0 link. Intel lists signaling rates of 16 GT/s for PCIe 4.0 and 32 GT/s for PCIe 5.0; these are interface signaling rates, not guaranteed application or SSD benchmark throughput. Intel’s PCIe 5.0 explainer says PCIe generations are backward compatible.

For scale, SanDisk describes theoretical interface bandwidth of about 4 GB/s per lane for PCIe 5.0, or 16 GB/s across four lanes, compared with 8 GB/s for a four-lane Gen 4 connection. These theoretical limits do not predict a drive’s real-world results. SanDisk’s Gen 5 SSD brief explicitly says that Gen 5 SSDs are backward compatible with Gen 4 slots, with performance capped at Gen 4 speeds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Check the M.2 slot and drive before installing
- Confirm the socket supports PCIe NVMe. M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that a socket supports every M.2 drive protocol. Check the motherboard manual for the exact socket’s supported interface.
- Check which generation and lanes the socket provides. Boards can have multiple M.2 sockets with different generations, lane counts, CPU or chipset connections, and sharing rules. A board’s Gen 5 support may apply to only one socket. Consult the manual for your exact motherboard and CPU configuration.
- Verify physical clearance. Match the SSD’s length to the board’s mounting points and check whether its heatsink fits beneath any motherboard cover or other components. M.2 2280 is one common size, but dimensions and heatsink arrangements vary by product.
- Review boot and lane-sharing details. The exact board and platform determine boot support and whether installing a drive affects other slots or ports. Look up the board’s documented configuration rather than assuming every M.2 socket behaves identically.
Does the speed limit make a Gen 5 SSD a poor choice?
Not necessarily. If you expect to move the drive to a Gen 5 system later, buying a Gen 5 model now may suit that plan, even though its current slot caps the link at Gen 4. If this is the only system you expect to use, compare Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives at the price and capacity available for your workload; the interface generation alone does not establish which is better value.

Manufacturer ratings are not a prediction of performance in an older slot. For example, MSI rates its SPATIUM M570 sequential reads at up to 9,500 MB/s for the 1 TB model and 10,000 MB/s for the 2 TB model; rated sequential writes are up to 8,500 MB/s and 10,000 MB/s, respectively. Those are MSI product ratings, not expected results when connected through a Gen 4 slot. The M570 is an M.2 2280 drive; MSI lists its dimensions as 80.00 × 22.00 × 3.5 mm without the heatsink and 80.40 × 23.00 × 20.40 mm with it. Check MSI’s M570 specifications for the specific version you are considering.
If the SSD is not detected
- Identify the exact motherboard model and socket. Use the board manual to confirm that the socket accepts PCIe NVMe M.2 drives, and check its supported CPU and lane configuration.
- Check installation and platform documentation. Confirm that the SSD is seated correctly and that the board’s documented settings and sharing rules do not affect that socket.
- Ask the motherboard or SSD vendor about the specific system. If it remains undetected, the Gen 5-to-Gen 4 mismatch alone is not enough to explain the problem. Follow the vendors’ guidance for that drive, board, and CPU.
Some specialized add-in-card configurations have additional requirements. For example, ASUS’s guidance for a Hyper M.2 add-in card on specified W790 boards describes CPU- and motherboard-dependent support and a case where PCIe speed must be set to Gen 4. That guidance concerns those particular configurations; it is not a general BIOS-change requirement for installing an ordinary M.2 SSD.
