MediaTek says eligible chipset platforms give phone makers the ability to support Android OS and security updates for up to eight years. The maker of each phone still decides what it will promise, and MediaTek’s announcement does not specifically name the Dimensity 9600.
What MediaTek’s eight-year announcement means
In a May 27, 2025 announcement, MediaTek said its collaboration with Google would give OEMs and ODMs the ability to support Android OS and security updates for up to eight years on devices powered by the Dimensity 9400, Dimensity 8400, and future chipsets in MediaTek’s flagship and premium mobile portfolio. “Up to eight years” describes a maximum capability for device makers, not a support promise automatically attached to every phone using an eligible processor. A manufacturer must choose its own commitment and state it for the particular handset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

MediaTek’s current product page lists Dimensity 9600M in its “Flagship 5G Family.” See MediaTek’s Dimensity flagship family listing. That makes it reasonable to infer that a 9600-family chipset could fall within the announcement’s reference to future flagship and premium platforms.

However, the 2025 announcement names the Dimensity 9400 and 8400 and does not explicitly name the Dimensity 9600. The product listing describes chipset features, not an Android update term for any phone. So the evidence supports possibility, not confirmation of eight-year support for a Dimensity 9600 handset.
Why the phone maker’s policy matters
MediaTek says Project Treble, which separates core Android system updates from manufacturer-specific modifications, helps reduce the work involved in preparing updates. That can make longer support more feasible, but it does not require a manufacturer to provide a particular number of upgrades or years of security patches.

Policies can vary by manufacturer and model. For example, Xiaomi’s global FAQ says security updates are typically maintained for at least two years after a model’s first shipment; some models may receive three years or longer, subject to actual conditions. This is a general Xiaomi policy statement, not a commitment for a Dimensity 9600 phone. Read Xiaomi’s global support policy FAQ.

- Android version upgrades: How many OS-version updates does the maker promise?
- Security updates: For how long will security patches continue?
- Start date: Does the support period begin at launch, first shipment, or another date?
- Coverage: Does the promise apply to your region and the particular model variant you plan to buy?
- Wording and cadence: Is the term a firm commitment, and does the manufacturer specify how often updates will arrive?
These details matter because “up to eight years” is not a substitute for a handset-specific promise. The available sources do not establish a particular Dimensity 9600 phone or its update duration.
