CDs store data as optical changes that a laser reads, not as magnetic patterns that a magnet can reverse. Even rewritable CD-RW discs are erased through an optical drive, not with a magnet.
Why a magnet does not erase a standard CD
A pressed CD represents information through tiny pits and lands arranged along a track. A drive shines a laser on the disc and reads differences in reflected light. Because the data is not stored as aligned magnetic domains, an ordinary permanent magnet has no recorded magnetic pattern to erase. The technical reference describes CDs and DVDs as electro-optical devices that use pits and lands: technical reference.

That is different from magnetic media such as tapes and some disks, where information is represented magnetically. A magnetic field can affect those media; that does not make it a suitable way to erase a CD. For the distinction, see the National Archives material on storage media.
What about CD-R and CD-RW?
CD-R
A recordable CD uses a recording layer to create optical changes that the reader can detect. Being writable does not make it magnetic: a magnet is not an eraser for a CD-R.

CD-RW
A CD-RW can be erased and reused, but its recording layer changes through a phase-change process controlled by a compatible optical drive. The Canadian Conservation Institute explains this recording-layer distinction in its guidance on optical discs. The drive’s write or erase process—not a magnet—changes the data.
Magneto-optical media are a separate format
Some media combine magnetic and optical principles, but they are not ordinary CDs. In magneto-optical recording, a laser heats the recording area while magnetic polarity is changed. The National Archives description of magneto-optical recording explains this hybrid process. Do not apply its behavior to a standard CD.

If a CD is unreadable
A magnet is not a likely explanation for ordinary CD data loss. Check the disc for dirt, scratches, or damage to its layers, then try it in a known-good compatible drive. Surface contamination or physical damage can interfere with optical reading; these checks cannot determine the cause for a particular disc. See the National Archives guidance on optical media.

To erase and reuse a disc, use a CD-RW and a drive that supports it; the drive performs the change to its recording layer. If you need to make data unrecoverable before disposal, do not rely on a magnet. NIST treats optical storage as a distinct media category in its media-sanitization guidance, so choose a disposal method appropriate to the disc and the sensitivity of its contents.
