Gemini can reach some work tools outside Google, so “it falls apart the moment I leave Google’s ecosystem” is too broad as a general claim. The practical limitation is narrower: connections vary by Gemini feature and account, and Google says its listed third-party Workspace integrations currently retrieve information but cannot change data in those apps. That distinction matters if your workflow needs Gemini to update a task, send a message, or edit a customer record—not just find it.
What “Gemini integration” means depends on where you use it
Google documents two different routes that are easy to conflate. Gemini Apps Connected Apps let Gemini work with selected Google services and, in some cases, attach a GitHub repository. Separately, Gemini in Workspace offers integrations with selected third-party services inside Workspace surfaces such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, and Chat. They have different service lists, controls, and documented limits; a connection in one does not establish what another can do.

Connected Apps for work or school accounts
Google lists Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive, Keep, Tasks, Classroom, and other Google services among the Connected Apps available in this context, and says users can attach a GitHub repository to help Gemini understand a codebase. Availability depends on factors such as account type, Workspace edition, location, language, device, and the Gemini app. For work or school accounts, access can also require a qualifying edition, Keep Activity to be on, and administrator enablement. See Google’s Connected Apps requirements and instructions.

Check the sources Gemini cites against the underlying item: Google warns that responses can be inaccurate or outdated.

Google also documents limits specific to these Connected Apps. For example, the Gmail connection cannot create drafts; the Drive connection cannot manage contents by creating folders or moving files; and the listed Docs, Sheets, and Slides connection cannot create or delete documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, or presentations. These are boundaries for the Connected Apps described on that help page, not a universal statement about every Gemini product or feature.
Third-party integrations in Gemini in Workspace
Google’s Workspace help page lists integrations for Asana, Atlassian Rovo (including Jira and Confluence), HubSpot, Mailchimp, Monday.com, QuickBooks, and Salesforce. Examples include finding assigned tasks, locating Jira issues, retrieving campaign details, or checking Salesforce leads. A connection may require a separate subscription to the third-party service, administrator setup for work or school accounts, or a third-party helper app. The current service list and requirements are on Google’s Gemini in Workspace integrations help page.

The crucial action boundary on that page is explicit: “Integrations currently only support read actions, such as searching for or finding information. You can’t use an integration to make changes to third-party apps.” In practical terms, finding a record is not the same as updating it. Treat this as the documented limit for the integrations covered by that page, rather than assuming it applies to every connector or Gemini feature.
What changed with Google’s September 2026 MCP announcement
On September 15, 2026, Google announced MCP integrations in Workspace for Asana, Atlassian Rovo, HubSpot, Intuit Mailchimp, Intuit QuickBooks, Monday, and Salesforce. Its September 30 update corrected the Admin console path for managing access. Google says administrators can control which connectors are enabled, and availability depends on specified Business, Enterprise, consumer, and education editions. The announcement makes a categorical claim that Gemini cannot connect to outside tools untenable, but it does not establish that every workflow is available to every user or that these connectors support write actions. Check Google’s dated Workspace announcement alongside the current help page and your organization’s settings.
How to tell whether Gemini will handle your workflow
Judge a specific task, not the word “integration.” For each outside service you rely on, check these points before building the workflow around Gemini:
- Where you are using Gemini: Identify whether the task uses Gemini Apps Connected Apps or an integration inside Gemini in Workspace. Their supported services and documented actions are not interchangeable.
- Whether your account exposes the connection: Check your account type and edition, plus any location, language, device, or app restrictions Google lists. In a managed work account, ask whether the administrator has enabled the app or connector.
- What action the task needs: Separate retrieval and summarization from editing, sending, creating, or updating. The Workspace third-party integrations page currently documents read actions only; the Connected Apps page separately lists unsupported actions for particular Google app connections.
- What setup the service requires: Confirm whether you need an active third-party subscription, a helper app, or administrator approval before expecting the connection to work.
- How you will verify the result: Open the cited source or record and confirm that the information is current and correct. A useful summary is not proof that a change was made in the source app.
If the required outcome is a write action that the relevant feature does not support, plan to make that change in the source app yourself or use an approved workflow that does. Do not infer that Gemini completed an update merely because it found the right record.

When a Microsoft-centered setup is a better comparison
If most of your work lives in Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 Copilot is a relevant alternative to investigate: Microsoft documents ways to extend apps and actions across those surfaces. That documentation alone is not a head-to-head test and does not show that Copilot is better for your team. Compare the exact apps you use, the actions each connection permits, and your organization’s account and administrator requirements. Microsoft’s overview is available at Microsoft Learn’s guide to extending solutions across Microsoft 365.
