Usually, yes—if another suitable power source is connected. A desktop normally gets operating power from its AC cable and internal power supply, while some laptops can run from a compatible AC adapter without their removable main battery. The answer depends on which battery you mean: a laptop’s rechargeable battery, a desktop’s small CMOS/RTC battery, or the computer’s only available power source.
Which battery do you mean?
Computers may contain different batteries with different jobs. Removing or losing one does not have the same effect as removing another.

Can a laptop run without its main battery?
Some laptops can start and run with the main battery removed, provided they receive power from the correct AC adapter. This is not guaranteed for every laptop. Dell gives this instruction for the removable-battery case: “If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it, and try to power on the laptop using only the AC adapter or charger.” Follow the manual for the exact model and use a manufacturer-provided or approved adapter. If the battery is internal or the laptop is sealed, do not open the computer just to disconnect it. Laptop designs and power controls differ, and a deeply discharged battery may also affect what happens when an adapter is connected. Check the model’s owner or service manual before attempting a battery-free test.

Will a desktop work without its CMOS/RTC battery?
A desktop’s CMOS/RTC coin-cell battery is separate from the main AC power path. The AC cable feeds the PSU, which supplies power to the computer’s components. A depleted CMOS/RTC battery therefore does not automatically mean the desktop cannot start.
Instead, a weak or depleted RTC battery may be associated with a clock/date error, a firmware setup message, or custom BIOS settings reverting to defaults. Dell documents those symptoms for the systems covered in its CMOS battery guidance. Battery presence, format and replacement procedure are model-specific; consult the service information rather than assuming every computer uses the same coin cell.

What to check when the computer will not start
First identify where the failure occurs. No lights or fans suggest a different stage from power indicators with no display, or a computer that reaches firmware but cannot load its operating system. “Powers on” and “boots into the operating system” are not interchangeable symptoms; Dell separates no-power troubleshooting from startup failures in its no-power guidance.

- Check the external power path. Confirm the wall outlet works, the power strip is on, and the cable or laptop adapter is firmly connected at both ends. For a laptop, check the adapter and charging-port connection as well. Dell recommends checking outlet and cable/adapter connections during no-power troubleshooting: laptop adapter guidance and desktop guidance.
- For a removable-battery laptop, consult its manual. If the manufacturer permits it, try starting the machine with the main battery removed and the approved adapter connected. Do not apply this procedure to a sealed laptop without model-specific instructions. Dell’s procedure is specifically framed for removable-battery laptops.
- If it powers on but reports a clock or CMOS problem, investigate the RTC battery. Check whether the model has a separate, serviceable RTC battery and follow its replacement instructions. A clock or settings symptom is a reason to investigate that component, not proof it caused a no-power condition. HP’s model-specific battery guidance directs users to instructions for their computer.
- If it remains completely without power, consider other hardware. A faulty adapter, charging port, cable, desktop PSU, motherboard or another component may be involved. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support steps or seek qualified repair help rather than treating a CMOS battery replacement as a universal fix. Dell’s desktop troubleshooting guide addresses the separate power path.
What the answer depends on
- Device type: A desktop normally relies on its AC cable and PSU; a laptop may use its main battery, its adapter, or both.
- Battery type: The rechargeable main battery and the CMOS/RTC battery serve different purposes.
- Removability and model design: Battery-free AC operation is a model-dependent option, not a universal laptop feature.
- Observed symptom: No power, no display, failure to load the operating system, and a clock or firmware warning point to different troubleshooting stages.
- Compatible external power: Adapter voltage, connector and model compatibility matter; use the exact model’s approved-power guidance.
