Which Mac Laptops Let You Upgrade RAM or Storage Yourself?

For internal upgrades, check specific legacy MacBook Pro models for removable RAM and compatible 2010–2017 MacBook Airs for SSD replacement. Current MacBook Air memory and storage must be configured at purchase.

If you want to change internal components regularly, most current MacBooks are a poor fit: choose memory and storage when you buy, because those parts cannot be upgraded afterward. For a documented internal RAM upgrade, look at specific legacy MacBook Pro models, especially the 15-inch Unibody Mid 2012. Some 2010–2017 MacBook Air models instead allow SSD replacement, but that does not make their RAM upgradeable.

Which MacBooks can you actually modify internally?

The answer depends on which component you want to change. RAM and SSD access are not interchangeable, and a repairable port or replaceable battery does not mean the memory or storage can be upgraded. The strongest evidence here is model-specific: Apple lists the 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) as having removable memory, while iFixit documents a RAM upgrade to 16 GB on the 15-inch Unibody MacBook Pro (Mid 2012). For storage, iFixit identifies supported MacBook Air models from 2010 through 2017 with user-replaceable SSDs.

Model or family Internal RAM Internal storage What it suits
MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012) Apple lists removable memory. Not established by Apple’s cited memory page; verify the exact model separately. Legacy choice when RAM access is the priority.
MacBook Pro 15-inch Unibody (Mid 2012) iFixit documents user installation up to 16 GB, although Apple configured it with up to 8 GB. iFixit’s teardown supports this model as relatively upgradeable; confirm the specific part and configuration before buying. Hands-on legacy modification, especially for RAM.
Supported MacBook Air models, 2010–2017 Do not assume the RAM is upgradeable. iFixit documents SSD replacement for compatible models in this range. Legacy option for storage replacement rather than RAM changes.
MacBook Air with M5 (2026) Configurable at purchase; iFixit says it is not upgradeable afterward. Apple lists 512 GB starting storage and configurations up to 4 TB; iFixit says it is not upgradeable afterward. Modern Mac for buyers willing to select capacity up front.

Best fit if you want to upgrade RAM

MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012)

Apple includes this specific model in its list of Mac laptops with removable memory. That makes it a supported starting point for someone seeking RAM access, but it does not establish the compatible memory capacity or storage-upgrade path. Check Apple’s model list and identify the exact machine before sourcing parts.

MacBook Pro 15-inch Unibody (Mid 2012)

iFixit’s teardown says Apple configured this model with up to 8 GB, but users could install up to 16 GB. Treat that as historical, model-specific guidance—not a promise about every MacBook Pro sold in 2012. Confirm that a used laptop is the Unibody Mid 2012 model and that the memory you plan to install is compatible.

Best fit if you want to replace the SSD

Some MacBook Air models released between 2010 and 2017 have user-replaceable SSDs, according to iFixit’s compatibility guide. The guide does not support treating every Air in that date range—or every configuration—as compatible, so check the exact model before buying a drive. It also does not establish a RAM upgrade path for these Air models.

iFixit warns that newer MacBook Air storage is likely soldered. Do not assume an SSD replacement is possible just because an older Air had a removable drive.

What to expect from a current MacBook Air

Apple announced the MacBook Air with M5 on March 3, 2026, in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Apple says storage starts at 512 GB and can be configured up to 4 TB; its specifications page lists configurable memory and storage tiers. Those are choices to make at purchase, not later internal upgrades: iFixit describes the 2026 Air’s memory and storage as non-serviceable and non-upgradeable.

Repairable does not mean upgradeable

Repair access can matter without making a Mac suitable for frequent RAM or storage changes. iFixit describes the current Air’s MagSafe, Thunderbolt, and headphone ports as modular, but says its memory and storage cannot be upgraded. Apple also provides a repair manual for the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air (2025); the existence of that manual does not establish an upgrade path for its RAM or SSD.

Apple’s June 2024 “Longevity by Design” report says MacBook Air and MacBook Pro batteries were redesigned to be easier and faster to replace. That is evidence about battery serviceability, not about upgrading memory or storage.

How to check a used Mac before buying parts

  1. Identify the exact model. Check its model identifier and match it against Apple’s removable-memory list or the relevant iFixit SSD guide. A year or screen size alone is not sufficient proof of compatibility.
  2. Decide which component you need to change. Confirm the evidence covers RAM, SSD, or both for that exact model; do not infer one upgrade from the other.
  3. Verify the part before purchasing. Match memory or storage specifications to the exact machine and intended configuration. The cited sources do not establish compatibility for a generic RAM kit or SSD.
  4. Inspect the individual laptop. Check its condition, battery health, and installed operating system. The cited upgrade guides do not establish the software-support lifespan or suitability of these legacy computers for current workloads.

Apple’s list explicitly says Mac laptops not included there have non-removable memory. Use it to rule out unsupported RAM assumptions, then consult model-specific documentation for any storage work.
