Wild West RPG Beginner’s Guide: Combat, Crime, and Survival

Wild West RPGs do not share one ruleset. Start with Deadlands’ free Test Drive, then check the 2026 core rules and your edition’s procedures for combat, crime, and survival.

“Wild West RPG” describes a genre, not one ruleset. The rules for combat, crime, and survival depend on the game and edition your group chooses. For a practical starting point, this guide uses Deadlands: The Weird West as an example: a Weird Western with horror and supernatural elements, set in an alternate-history 1884. New players can begin with Pinnacle Entertainment Group’s free Deadlands Test Drive before deciding whether to use the full rules.

First, choose a game and edition

Do not assume that advice for one Western roleplaying game applies to every other one. Even within a single game line, editions can differ in what books or accessories a group needs. This guide uses Deadlands: The Weird West and distinguishes the 2026 Core Rules from an earlier SWADE-era edition.

Pinnacle describes Savage Worlds as the ruleset underlying its roleplaying games. Its system supports both narrative and miniature-based play, with rules covering more than combat, including Dramatic Tasks, Chases, and Interludes. Those features describe the system’s range, not a universal set of Wild West RPG rules. Pinnacle’s Savage Worlds Adventure Edition overview explains the system at a high level.

Start with the free Deadlands Test Drive

If you are curious about Deadlands but do not yet know whether it suits your group, try Pinnacle’s free Test Drive first. The publisher says it includes pregenerated character archetypes, Power Cards, combat rules, and an adventure. That gives a group a way to experience a session before committing to a full rulebook; it is an introductory resource, not a complete substitute for the core rules.

Find it through Pinnacle’s New to Savage Worlds beginner page. Use the included combat rules as your first rules reference rather than importing procedures from another Western game.

When to move to the 2026 core rules

If your group decides to continue with Deadlands, Pinnacle identifies Deadlands: The Weird West Core Rules 2026 as its new default rulebook and says it includes updated Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE) rules. Its product description covers the rules alongside setting material, character options, gear, and powers. See the publisher’s 2026 Core Rules product page and 2026 release announcement for current edition details.

The announcement listed the 332-page PDF for $19.99 USD when it was published; price and availability can change, so check the product page before buying. Pinnacle also lists a print-plus-PDF option in its catalog.

Watch the edition carefully when using older recommendations. A retailer’s listing for an earlier Deadlands: The Weird West SWADE core book says that it requires the separate Savage Worlds core rules. That requirement applies to that earlier listing; it should not be carried over to the 2026 book, which Pinnacle says includes updated SWADE rules. Studio 2 Publishing’s earlier-edition listing identifies the version it describes.

Combat: learn it from the chosen rules

The Deadlands Test Drive includes combat rules, making it the appropriate first stop for a new player who wants to see how a fight works. The available publisher descriptions do not establish enough detail to accurately teach turn order, attack resolution, wounds, or tactical options here. Follow the rules in the exact Test Drive or core edition your group is using; do not treat a procedure from another game or edition as interchangeable.

Savage Worlds also supports scenes beyond fights, including Chases and Dramatic Tasks. These are reasons to look beyond combat when learning the system, but the publisher’s overview is not a step-by-step rules tutorial.

Crime and outlaw play: agree on the game’s approach

“Crime” can mean a character breaking the law, playing an outlaw, investigating a robbery, or facing arrest and other consequences. The publisher sources cited here do not establish one Deadlands or Savage Worlds crime subsystem, nor do they show how every Wild West RPG handles law and punishment.

Before play, check the chosen edition’s rules and setting text for the procedures it actually provides. It is also useful for the group to agree on what kinds of criminal behavior and consequences fit the campaign. Treat that conversation as a table decision unless the rules you are using specify otherwise.

Survival: check the specific edition, not genre assumptions

A Western setting may feature harsh travel and wilderness hazards, but that alone does not tell you what the game models mechanically. The publisher information cited here does not establish a detailed Deadlands survival procedure or a universal equipment checklist, or confirm rules for thirst, exposure, tracking, or travel.

For those situations, consult the selected edition’s rules and setting material. If a procedure is not covered there, the game master and players can decide how to resolve it at their table rather than assuming another Wild West RPG’s method applies.

Accessories are edition- and table-dependent. Pinnacle describes playing cards as part of Savage Worlds initiative on its homepage, but that statement alone does not establish which accessories are required for the 2026 Deadlands rules. Check the chosen book’s requirements before purchasing extras. Pinnacle Entertainment Group is the publisher’s main site.
