Apple’s announced foldable iPhone, iPhone Duo, has a smaller outer display and a larger inner display, with a hinge and camera areas that affect usable space. Make layouts resize, use adaptive system navigation and presentation components, respect safe areas, and test the app in multiple poses. Opting into the edge-to-edge experience is a separate step from making an existing app run on the device.
What iPhone Duo changes for app layouts
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Its listed specifications are a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display; Apple says the inner display has 50 percent more area than iPhone 18 Pro Max and that both displays share an aspect ratio. These are Apple’s product specifications, not independent measurements. As of October 7, 2026, Apple’s announced preorder date—Friday, October 16—and availability date—Friday, October 23—are still upcoming.

The device is not simply a phone that turns into an unobstructed tablet-sized rectangle. When open, a hinge runs through the middle of the inner display, and cameras occupy reserved screen regions. Safe areas and margins can be asymmetric, and navigation or toolbar controls may appear vertically. Design for the usable regions and the current app scene rather than assuming every point on the display is available for content.

Respond to the space the app receives
Use SwiftUI or Auto Layout so the interface responds to its current scene bounds and size classes. Choose compact or expanded presentations from available space, rather than branching on a particular device model, interface idiom, or portrait-versus-landscape assumption. Opening or closing the device, rotating it, folding it partway, resizing a scene, or using Split View can all change the space an app can use.

- [Security & Privacy]: Included 1 RFID Card with RFID blocking technology to prevent card demagnetization and identity theft, it can protect the information security of all cards in the wallet. An essential choice among rfid blocking wallets for men.
- [Perfect Gifts]: An ideal choice for fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, or friends. Great for birthdays, Father's Day, Mother's Day, or Valentine's Day. A unique iphone wallet gift for those who appreciate everyday convenience.
This approach also makes the layout more resilient to contexts beyond the two built-in displays. A scene can be resized or shown on a different screen; the screen’s full bounds are not necessarily the app’s available area.
Use the scene lifecycle and avoid fixed screen bounds
For UIKit apps, Apple recommends the scene lifecycle and says UIScene lifecycle is required when building with the latest SDKs. Review code that reads fixed main-screen dimensions or ties a layout to a single window: use the relevant scene or view’s available space instead. A fixed screen-size calculation can produce incorrect content sizing when a scene is resized or hosted somewhere other than the assumed screen.

Decide whether to adopt the full-screen experience
Apple’s guidance distinguishes running on iPhone Duo from adopting its full-screen behavior. Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK extend to the screen edge; standard navigation and toolbar buttons lay out vertically under the status bar. Apple says apps that have not adopted the iOS 27 SDK still run on the device in a familiar size and aspect ratio when it is open. If you opt in, review the whole interface rather than treating edge-to-edge rendering as a simple background change.
For custom edge-to-edge bars, Apple’s Tech Talk points to the ReservedRegion APIs introduced in iOS 27.1. Use system components where they fit, and account for reserved areas when building custom bars or other foreground controls.

Let standard navigation and presentations adapt
Apple identifies its standard SwiftUI and UIKit components as adaptive across device poses. They can reduce the amount of custom layout and navigation logic needed as the available space changes.
- Navigation: SwiftUI
NavigationSplitViewand UIKitUISplitViewControllercan collapse to a single stack when the device is closed and show tiled or overlay columns when it is open. Developers can opt into a sidebar on the inner display. - Tabs: SwiftUI
TabViewand UIKitUITabBarControlleradapt across poses. - Secondary UI: Sheets, popovers, context menus, and alerts also adapt across poses.
If you use custom navigation or presentation behavior, plan for those same transitions yourself. Check that the hierarchy remains understandable and controls remain reachable when the layout changes between compact and expanded space.

Handle the hinge, cameras, and safe areas deliberately
Keep foreground controls in usable regions
Respect safe areas for interactive foreground content. Apple says system bars avoid the status bar and camera, but insets can differ by side, so do not assume symmetric margins. Background artwork can extend beyond the safe area when that is appropriate; controls and important content should not be placed where reserved areas obscure them.
Move selected elements only when needed
For a control or related group that becomes obscured or difficult to reach, Apple describes a displacement pattern: move the affected element—or a related group—to a more useful region. Keep related content together rather than pushing it far apart. Do not use displacement for continuously scrolling articles, feeds, documents, or lists; preserving their continuity is the better fit.

Compare implementation approaches
| Decision | Adaptive approach | Brittle approach |
|---|---|---|
| What determines layout | Current scene space and size classes. | Device model, interface idiom, or assumed orientation. |
| Navigation and presentations | Standard adaptive SwiftUI or UIKit components where they fit. | Custom navigation and presentations without equivalent behavior across poses. |
| Fold and reserved regions | Let content flow around usable regions; displace selected elements only when necessary. | Treat the open display as one unobstructed rectangle or move scrolling content. |
| Window and screen sizing | Use the scene or view’s available space and the scene lifecycle. | Use fixed main-screen references or assume screen bounds equal app bounds. |
| Validation | Check open, closed, rotated, folded, safe-area, and multitasking states. | Validate only a single portrait screenshot. |
Test more than the open and closed screens
Apple directs developers to use Xcode 27.1 and the iPhone Duo simulator in Device Hub. Its controls allow you to open, close, rotate, or fold the simulated device. Treat this as a set of distinct layout conditions, not a two-screen compatibility check:
- In Xcode 27.1, open Device Hub and select the iPhone Duo simulator.
- Check the closed device’s compact outer display, including whether navigation and primary actions remain clear.
- Open the device and review the expanded inner display, including the hinge, camera areas, safe areas, and any sidebar or additional navigation columns.
- Rotate the device and check landscape and tent-like use, then fold it partially to observe how the interface responds to changed available space.
- Review asymmetric insets and Split View. Confirm that controls remain usable and that content does not rely on the full screen being available to the app.
A single portrait screenshot cannot establish that an app handles scene resizing, folding, or multitasking. Use the simulator states to find layout assumptions that need to be removed or replaced with adaptive behavior.
