It can also make remote control and seasonal schedule changes easier. But the EPA’s average savings estimate does not predict your household’s bill, and a connected controller will not fix leaks or poor sprinkler coverage.
What a WiFi sprinkler controller actually does
Weather-based irrigation controllers use local weather data, landscape conditions, or both to adjust when and how much an automatic system waters. That can make seasonal schedule changes easier than relying on a fixed clock schedule. Some products are standalone replacements; others are add-on devices that need a compatible existing controller.

WiFi provides a connection for remote control and schedule updates. Weather-based operation and WiFi are related but distinct features: check how a specific model obtains weather information and what it can do if its internet connection is interrupted.
What the water-saving estimate can—and cannot—tell you
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program estimates that an average home can save nearly 7,600 gallons of water annually by replacing a standard clock-based controller with a WaterSense-labeled weather-based controller. The EPA page presenting that estimate does not state its publication year. It is an average, not a guarantee for a particular yard or a bill-savings calculation.

- DITCH THE DIAL – Upgrade to smart irrigation with the free Rachio app for precise, easy control.
- AUTOMATIC WEATHER SKIPS – Patented Weather Intelligence skips watering for rain, wind, freeze & more.
- SAVE WATER YEAR-ROUND – Adaptive schedules help your yard thrive in April showers & July heat.
- FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING – Create your own schedule or let Weather Intelligence adjust automatically; includes grow-in options.
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE – Manage watering, run zones, view schedules & track estimated usage in the Rachio App.
WaterSense also presents a national hypothetical: if every U.S. home with an automatic sprinkler system installed and properly operated a WaterSense-labeled controller, the result would be 220 billion gallons and $2.5 billion in water costs saved annually. That is a modeled scenario, not a measured outcome. Neither figure establishes an individual payback period.
The label is a useful quality screen, not a claim that every WiFi controller is certified. EPA says labeled controllers are independently certified against performance criteria that address irrigation adequacy, excess irrigation, and supplemental capabilities. Its revised Weather-Based Irrigation Controller specification, Version 1.1, was released in September 2021; EPA says the referenced performance test method was adopted into ANSI/ASABE S627. Confirm the exact model in EPA’s WaterSense product search rather than inferring certification from a product’s connectivity or marketing.

Work out whether the numbers make sense for your home
Compare the cost of the controller and any installation or required accessories with the potential value over the time you expect to own it. Use your own bill and watering history; the national water-volume estimate cannot be converted into your dollar savings without your local rates and usage details.

- Find your current outdoor-water cost. Use your actual water bill and local rates. If the bill separately charges sewer service on irrigation water, account for that separately rather than assuming all water charges apply to outdoor use.
- Estimate what could change. Consider how often you currently update the schedule, how much the system waters, and whether it follows a fixed schedule despite seasonal weather changes. Do not treat the EPA average as a promised reduction for your yard.
- Add the full upfront cost. Include the controller, installation labor if needed, and any required expansion module or sensor. Check whether your utility currently offers a rebate; availability is local.
- Consider convenience separately from savings. Remote control and easier schedule adjustments may be worthwhile to you even if the water-bill case is modest. They are not the same as a guaranteed financial return.
A WiFi controller is more likely to make sense when you have an in-ground automatic system, a fixed schedule that is rarely adjusted, meaningful outdoor water charges, and a compatible controller with enough zone capacity. The financial case is weaker if you already manage a basic timer effectively, use little outdoor water, lack compatible wiring or reliable WiFi at the controller, or have a healthy, low-cost routine.

Check compatibility before buying
Record the make and model of the existing controller and how many zones are active. Then check the prospective controller’s installation requirements, zone capacity, sensor needs, and compatibility guidance. A product’s listed maximum capacity may require an expansion module to serve all your zones.
- Replacement or add-on: Identify whether you need a standalone controller or an add-on for a compatible base unit. EPA’s product search distinguishes these product types and offers compatibility guidance.
- Valves and wiring: Verify the controller supports the installed valve configuration, including compatible 24 VAC solenoids where applicable. Check how existing rain or freeze sensor wiring will be handled.
- Zones and expansion: Match capacity to the zones you actually use, and account for the cost and fit of any required expansion module.
- Weather inputs: Check whether the model uses a local weather signal, an onsite sensor, or a combination. Choose based on the available inputs and your installation.
- WiFi and outages: Check signal strength where the controller will be mounted and read the manufacturer’s outage documentation. Rachio support says its controllers retain the last schedule received from its cloud during WiFi outages or interruptions. That supports continued use of that stored schedule, not app control or schedule updates without connectivity.
Confirm the exact model and configuration with the manufacturer’s documentation and EPA’s product search. Product availability can vary by market.

What a current product example tells you about cost
Rachio’s U.S. store listing gives the Rachio 3 direct-store prices of $199.99 for an 8-zone model and $249.99 for a 16-zone model, and says there are no monthly app fees. These are the manufacturer’s listed prices, not an independent market survey; prices and availability can change. Rachio also says installation takes 30 minutes or less without special tools. That is a manufacturer claim, not a dependable estimate for every wiring setup or home.
Use the example to check the kinds of cost details that matter—zone count, recurring fees, and installation—not as proof that a particular model will fit your system or deliver savings. Compare the exact configuration you need, including any accessories or expansion hardware.

A controller cannot repair a faulty irrigation system
A smart schedule cannot compensate for leaking pipes or valves, overspray, poorly aimed heads, or uneven coverage. Inspect the system and correct those problems; EPA’s general guidance recommends checking for leaks and overspray and adjusting irrigation to the landscape. If the system wastes water because of a physical fault, address that fault rather than expecting connectivity to solve it.
