In ADAC’s winter comparison on a Volkswagen Golf, the narrower sizes did better on snow, slush, and aquaplaning, while the widest size did better on dry pavement. The tire model you choose can matter as much as the width, and the only width you should buy is one your vehicle’s maker approves.
What the winter comparison showed
How the test was set up
ADAC, the German automobile club, tested five widths of the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 on a Volkswagen Golf. The sizes ran from 195/65 R15 to 225/40 R18. Its report, published October 25, 2018, found that all five dimensions earned an overall “good” rating. The differences between dimensions were smaller than the differences between models within the same dimension. Treat that as a result for this one vehicle, tire family, and test program, not a verdict on width in general. The original report is in German: ADAC, “Reifenbreiten im Winter: lieber schmal oder extrabreit?”

Where narrow won and where wide won
The results split by surface, which is the most useful way to read a width comparison.

Standing water: the numbers and their limits
For one test condition with 7 mm of standing water, ADAC reported that the 225 mm-wide tires lost road contact at about 70 km/h. The 195 mm-wide tires held contact until above 80 km/h. Those speeds describe that test, with that tire family and vehicle. They are not a safe-speed threshold for other tires, other water depths, or other cars.

Beyond grip: comfort, handling, and efficiency
Dry grip and handling
ADAC’s 2025 consumer overview, published March 6, 2025, describes wider tires as giving better grip on dry roads in its comparison. It also says the lower sidewall of a wide tire makes it stiffer and improves handling. That is the same trade-off that shows up in winter: the feature that sharpens dry handling is the one that works against a tire that needs to cut through snow or water. The overview is here: ADAC, “Die richtige Reifengröße: Besser schmal oder breit?”
Ride comfort
According to the same overview, wide, flat tires are less comfortable than narrower tires with taller sidewalls. Sidewall height and stiffness change how much road shock reaches the cabin, so a drive that feels firm on a wide tire may be the result of the design rather than a fault.
Rolling resistance and fuel use
ADAC reports a 6% increase in rolling resistance for a 30 mm increase in width. That figure comes from ADAC’s 2025 comparison and applies to the tires it tested. It does not establish the same penalty for every pair of tires sold.

The National Academies’ 2006 report on tires and fuel economy explains that tire design, construction, and operating conditions all affect rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Width is one of several design variables. A narrower tire from one manufacturer is not guaranteed to beat a wider tire from another. Read the report here: Transportation Research Board, National Academies, Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy (2006).
When a manufacturer changes several things at once
Bridgestone describes its ologic technology as a package. It combines a narrower width with a larger diameter, higher inflation pressure, and changes to materials, tread, and structure. The company reports a 30% reduction in rolling-resistance coefficient and a 10% improvement in wet braking, measured against a conventional comparison tire it specifies. Those figures reflect the whole package and that comparator, so they cannot be credited to narrowness alone: Bridgestone, “ologic”.
Model matters as much as size
ADAC’s winter test found that differences between tire models within one width could exceed the differences between widths. A narrow model can underperform a wider model from a stronger range, and the reverse is also true. If you are choosing between two sizes, compare the models in each size before deciding the size is the decisive factor. ADAC makes the same recommendation for all buyers, whichever width they pick. In the words of Dr. Reinhard Kolke, ADAC’s head of Test and Technology:

- VERSATILITY: Not just for mountain bikes, also perfect for electric bikes, snow bikes or other types of bike.
- SUITABLE SIZE: This is a foldable bike tires kit, sized 26"x4.0", compatible with all inner tubes that width 4.0". The sidewalls are constructed with steel bead, securely fix the tires and tubes in the rim, providing a tight fit and will not fall off. Please confirm the correct size before purchase. PSI: 20.
- STURDY & DURABLE: 26 inch bike tire is made of excellent rubber material, sturdy, thick and durable, have strong puncture resistance and wear resistance. The mountain bike tires have excellent handling on various rugged terrains, pavement, dirt/gravel trails, snow or other off-road rides.
- EXCELLENT GRIP: Tight and symmetrical tread pattern design, well-crafted, with a wider tread for stronger grip and traction, without affecting the speed. The ebike tires are quiet enough to reduce vibrations and provide a smooth and comfortable ride, with strong load-bearing and compression resistance, can hold up to about 200lbs.
- BICYCLE TIRES KIT: Includes 2 bicycle tires and 2 inner tubes, can be used on both front or rear wheels. As well as 2 tire levers, 5 valve cores, 1 valve core wrench and 2 valve cap covers. The package is tight and firm, foldable design can effectively save space, easy to carry. The fat bike tire is lightweight, about 9lbs which can reduce your load.

Choosing a size without guessing
Width is only worth weighing once you have a list of sizes your vehicle allows. Follow these steps:

- Parameters: Folding Replacement Bike Tire 26x2.10 MIN-MAX inflate to 280-450 Kpa(40-65 P.S.L/2.8-4.5BAR).
- Practical: Rice tread design, large ground contact surface, taking into account good road surface and light off-road conditions of driving stability and grip performance
- Premium Material: high content superior butyl rubber formula, more environmentally friendly, less odor, better wear resistance than most tire.
- New soft wire technology: the tire can be folded, easy to store and carry. After the tire is opened from the folding mode, it is normal that it is relatively soft and can be installed normally. Please note: the steel wire part of the outer tire cannot be completely folded after receiving it, which will lead to uneven installation. If you want to restore the original shape after disassembling, you need to gently fold or roll it according to the received state, and do not overexert
- The tires are designed for regular mountain biking use. Damage resulting from extreme off-road riding, overloading, racing, modifications, or improper installation is not covered under warranty. For special requirements, please contact us via Amazon Messages before purchase to confirm
- Find the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver-side door edge or door post. Your owner’s manual also lists the correct tire size. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration directs drivers to both: NHTSA, “Tire Safety Ratings and Awareness | TireWise”.
- Choose either the original size or another size the vehicle manufacturer recommends. A width you prefer does not confirm that a tire fits the wheel, carries the required load, or is an approved option.
- Within those approved sizes, decide which conditions matter most to you. If you drive mostly in snow or slush, the winter results above point toward the narrower approved sizes. If you drive mostly on dry roads and value steering feel, the wider approved sizes deserve a closer look.
- Compare the specific models in each candidate size, not only the size itself.
- Check the tire’s load index and speed rating against the label before buying. Those values are set for your vehicle, so do not substitute a different load or speed rating for a width you like better.
Snow chains and winter equipment
Chain clearance depends on the vehicle and the tire fitment. If you use chains, confirm with your owner’s manual or the chain manufacturer that your approved tire size allows them before you buy either one. A wider tire is not automatically unusable with chains, and a narrow tire is not automatically compatible. Check the specific combination.
Bottom line for buyers
Decide what you need most, then narrow the field with the vehicle’s approved sizes. Narrow sizes have an advantage in the snow, slush, and standing-water conditions tested by ADAC. Wide sizes have an advantage on dry pavement, along with sharper steering feel and a firmer ride. Compare models within each width, because model differences can be larger than width differences.
(Note: all ADAC results above come from its own test conditions and tire family; apply them to your vehicle with that in mind.)
