A Wi-Fi range extender is usually the simplest add-on for one weak room, but it can only rebroadcast the signal it receives. For weak coverage across several rooms or floors, compare a mesh system; where distance or walls make wireless links unreliable, powerline networking or a wired access point may be a better fit. Before buying anything, try improving your router’s placement.
Start by improving the router’s signal
Move the router toward a central, elevated, open spot if your service connection and cables allow. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it beside large metal objects and appliances. Walls, distance, building materials, and the router’s frequency band all affect coverage, so the best location depends on your home.

As general guidance, TP-Link says 2.4 GHz typically reaches farther with less bandwidth, while 5 GHz can offer faster speeds over shorter distances. Those are trade-offs, not a promise of a particular result in every router or building. See TP-Link support.

| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi range extender | One room or a targeted weak area | It receives the router’s Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts it. Its usefulness depends on the signal reaching the extender and its location. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi | Coverage across multiple rooms or floors | Home size, layout, construction, and node placement matter. Check compatibility before adding nodes to an existing system. |
| Powerline networking | Places where distance or obstacles make a wireless link difficult | It carries network traffic through electrical wiring; the available electrical path affects whether it suits your home. |
| Wired access point | A location where you can run Ethernet and want a stable link | Requires an Ethernet connection to the access point; it avoids relying on a wireless link back to the router. |
These are different approaches, not a universal ranking. Compare the number and location of weak areas, your home’s construction, compatibility with existing equipment, whether Ethernet or a usable electrical path is available, setup simplicity, and how much you value a stable connection.

Where to place a Wi-Fi extender
Start by placing it roughly halfway between the router and the weak area, but keep it where the router’s signal is still usable. The halfway point is only a starting rule, not a measured guarantee. TP-Link’s placement guide says placement is the single biggest factor affecting an extender’s performance and conditions its distance guidance on a strong signal and few obstacles: TP-Link’s extender placement guidance.
- Choose an outlet between the router and the room with weak coverage, rather than putting the extender inside the dead zone.
- Check the extender’s signal indicator or companion app after setup. If its connection to the router is weak, move it closer to the router.
- Test the connection in the room and at the devices you care about. Move the extender and test again if coverage remains unreliable.
A connected indicator or successful internet access shows that the extender is operating; it does not establish a particular speed increase. Verify the actual result where you use Wi-Fi. For a wireless link that remains unstable, TP-Link recommends access-point mode with an Ethernet cable when that mode is supported: TP-Link setup guidance.

When mesh makes more sense
Several weak areas, especially across multiple rooms or floors, may point toward mesh rather than a single extender. There is no placement formula that works for every home: Google describes mesh placement as “an inexact science” and advises testing the mesh connection after setup. Home size, construction, layout, and node placement all affect the result. See Google’s guidance on where to place Wifi devices.
Check system compatibility before adding nodes. Google specifically says Nest Wifi Pro cannot join the same mesh as older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices. That limitation applies to those Google products; it is not a general rule for all mesh systems.

Will a range extender make internet faster?
Not necessarily. An extender can make Wi-Fi available in a weak area, but it depends on the quality of its connection back to the router. A poor router-to-extender link can limit the connection it rebroadcasts. The sources cited here provide setup guidance, not independent, model-by-model speed tests or a guaranteed speed gain. Judge the change by testing the rooms and devices that matter to you.
