If both are slow, focus on your internet service or network equipment; if only the Switch is slow, troubleshoot its Wi-Fi or wired connection. A game download can also appear stuck because software is open or sleep-mode settings are preventing progress.
Check whether the Switch or the network is slow
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Record the Download Speed and Upload Speed.
- Run an internet speed test on a phone or computer connected to the same home network.
- Compare the results. If both the Switch and other device are slow, investigate your internet service or home network. If the other device is much faster, focus on the Switch’s connection path or saved network settings.
Nintendo lists 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as troubleshooting comparison values, not as a guaranteed ideal speed for game downloads. If the Switch remains below those values, Nintendo advises contacting your internet service provider to ask whether the results are expected for your service. Nintendo’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide identifies slow ISP service, unresponsive network equipment, weak or interfered-with Wi-Fi, and several devices using excessive bandwidth as common causes.

Improve a slow Wi-Fi connection
- Move the console closer to the router for a test, and reduce obstructions between them.
- Move metal objects and nearby electronic devices away from the console and router where practical; they can interfere with wireless reception.
- In System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, create a fresh connection to your network.
- If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test the band you are not currently using. Neither is always faster: compare the Switch’s connection test in your own location.
Restart the modem and router by unplugging both, waiting 30 seconds, then reconnecting the modem and router in sequence. If the problem continues, ask the router manufacturer about firmware updates or a factory reset.

Use Ethernet to test the wireless path
A wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, but it does not guarantee faster downloads or raise the speed supplied by your internet provider. If your dock has no built-in LAN port, a compatible USB LAN adapter is needed to connect the Switch by Ethernet.

- Power-cycle the modem and router, then test the wired connection.
- For diagnosis, try connecting the console directly to the modem if your network setup allows it.
- Try another Ethernet cable. If the connection remains unreliable, ask the router manufacturer about firmware or reset steps.
Unpause a download that has stopped progressing
Some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Save your game and close the software, then refresh the download status:
- Press HOME and close the game or software.
- Open your user page from the HOME Menu.
- Select User Settings > Update Download Progress.
If the download progress does not begin or remains stuck, restart the console and wait for it to reconnect to the internet. Avoid opening software that may pause the download, and run the connection test if progress is still slow. See Nintendo’s steps for a stuck software or update download.

Check sleep-mode download conditions
The Switch can continue downloading in sleep mode when it has an internet connection and enough free space in system memory or on an inserted microSD card. Keep a Wi-Fi-connected console within router range and avoid obstructions. For a wired connection, enable System Settings > Sleep Mode > Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode.

If a download does not progress while in sleep mode, update the system, restart the console, and check available storage. If it still does not progress, try downloading while the console is on. Sleep mode is a way to let an eligible download continue; Nintendo does not say it increases the connection’s maximum speed. Nintendo’s sleep-mode download guidance covers these conditions.

Choose the next troubleshooting step
