Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

But Wi-Fi can stream 4K reliably when its signal is strong and steady, and Ethernet cannot fix a slow broadband service or another bottleneck farther along the route.
Why Ethernet is usually more consistent
A 4K stream travels from the streaming service across the internet and your broadband connection, through your router, and finally to the TV or streaming device. Any link along that route can become a bottleneck. Ethernet improves only the local connection between the device and router; it does not repair a weak broadband connection, an outage, or congestion elsewhere.

Wi-Fi adds a radio link whose performance can change with distance, walls, obstacles, interference, and other wireless traffic. The Internet Engineering Task Force notes that wireless-link capacity can change rapidly as interference and signal strength change or endpoints move in its RFC 9317, “Operational Considerations for Streaming Media”. A cable avoids those particular variations. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, puts the practical comparison plainly: “A wired connection is usually faster and more reliable” in its broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting advice.

That is a general advantage, not a guaranteed improvement in every home. There is no universal percentage by which Ethernet reduces buffering: results depend on the device, router, broadband service, network load, and the rest of the streaming route.

Do you need Ethernet for 4K?
No. A stable Wi-Fi connection can be enough. Netflix recommends a stable internet connection and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K UHD; that is Netflix’s recommendation, not a universal requirement for every service or a promise that playback will always be smooth. Check the streaming service’s own guidance for its requirements at Netflix’s internet speed recommendations.
Speed and reliability are different. A speed check is a snapshot; it does not prove that the connection will stay steady throughout playback or that other household devices will not compete for capacity. Nor does a fast result on a phone necessarily describe the connection at a TV in another room. Use the TV or streamer’s network check when available.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet: how to choose
| Consideration | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency | A direct cable avoids changes in the local radio link. | Signal and available capacity can vary with distance, obstacles, interference, and congestion. |
| Distance and layout | Works well if there is a practical cable route from the device to the router. | Convenient without a cable, but performance may fall in distant rooms or through walls. |
| Device support | Requires an Ethernet socket on the TV or streamer; use a cable capable of your broadband speed. | Requires compatible Wi-Fi on both the router and device. |
| Mobility and convenience | Best suited to a device that stays in one place; cable routing may be awkward. | Useful when the device moves or a cable run is impractical. |
| What a test tells you | A test on the wired device helps assess its connection through the router and onward route at that time. | A test on the device includes the local Wi-Fi link as well as the onward route, at that time. |
If the device has an Ethernet socket and you can route a cable safely and neatly, connecting it directly to the router is a sensible first choice. A basic cable that supports the broadband speed is sufficient; a premium cable cannot make a service faster than the supported connection. Ofcom’s guidance on improving broadband and Wi-Fi recommends wiring stationary devices where practical.

- Run the device’s network check. Use the TV or streaming device’s built-in connection test. Netflix also provides an in-app connection check on supported TVs and TV-connected devices; see Netflix’s connection-check instructions.
- Compare wired and wireless on the same device. If possible, connect that TV or streamer by Ethernet, use the same streaming service, and compare the network check and playback. This is a home troubleshooting comparison, not a controlled test.
- Repeat at different times if results vary. A single check cannot show whether performance changes with household activity or time of day.
- Check whether other devices are affected. If other devices also struggle, the cause may be beyond the TV’s Wi-Fi link. Netflix’s buffering troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the problem occurs on one device or multiple devices.
If wired playback is steady while Wi-Fi playback on the same device is not, the local wireless link is a likely contributor. If both are poor, look beyond Wi-Fi: check service speed against the provider’s recommendation, pause large downloads or updates, and investigate the router, broadband service, or a wider service problem. Wiring cannot remove those other bottlenecks.

Ways to improve Wi-Fi before buying anything
- Place the router in an open, elevated, central position rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet.
- Reduce walls and other obstacles between router and streaming device where possible.
- Keep the router away from sources of radio interference and test again after changing its position.
- Choose a band supported by both router and client, bearing in mind the range trade-off.
2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz trade-offs
When both router and device support them, 5 GHz often offers higher throughput and less congestion than 2.4 GHz nearby, but it has shorter range and passes through walls less effectively. 2.4 GHz can reach farther and handle obstacles better, though it may be more congested. Six-gigahertz Wi-Fi can offer low congestion and strong performance close to the router, but requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment and also has shorter range. Microsoft explains these Wi-Fi band and home-layout trade-offs.

Consider Ethernet for a fixed device
A suitable Ethernet cable can be a straightforward option when the TV or streamer has a port and a practical route to the router. Match the cable’s capability to your broadband speed; paying extra for a premium cable does not improve service beyond what the connection supports.

- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Consider mesh only for a coverage problem
In a larger home where Wi-Fi is weak in rooms far from the router, a mesh system may help extend coverage. Ofcom notes that mesh can reach more rooms, but costs more and too many units can make problems worse. First try router placement and diagnose the connection; mesh will not fix an ISP outage or a slow broadband service. See Ofcom’s advice on mesh Wi-Fi and coverage.
