What Are NVIDIA AI GPUs, and Why Do Cloud Providers Need So Many?

NVIDIA AI GPUs power parallel computing for training and inference. Cloud providers combine them into connected systems and rent capacity, while power, sites and networking constrain how quickly fleets can grow.

NVIDIA AI GPUs are specialized processors for the parallel calculations used in AI model training and inference. Cloud providers install them in connected data-center systems and rent compute capacity to customers. Providers need large fleets because demand spans more than training a model once: they also have to serve models, support experimentation and data processing, and build systems that connect GPUs to memory, CPUs, networking, power and cooling.

What does an AI GPU do?

A GPU can perform many calculations in parallel, which suits much of the matrix-heavy work involved in training and running AI models. It is best understood as a specialized compute engine, not a complete AI computer: usable capacity also depends on servers, memory, networking, software and the data center around them.

  • Training: compute is used to fit or update a model.
  • Inference: compute is used to generate outputs from a trained model.
  • Other work: GPUs can also accelerate data processing and search, among other applications.

Both training and inference are relevant sources of demand, but available figures here do not establish what share of overall industry GPU demand belongs to either one.

Why do cloud providers need large GPU fleets?

Customers need capacity without building their own data centers

A cloud provider operates the physical infrastructure and makes compute available to customers as needed. That lets startups, enterprises, researchers and other customers access a large cluster without independently financing and running an equivalent facility. NVIDIA describes its AI-cloud partner model as a way to broaden such access.

AI demand continues after training

Once a model is trained, it may need compute every time a service uses it to respond to a prompt or perform another task. Providers also need capacity for model development, experimentation and data processing. AWS and NVIDIA have named agentic AI, scientific discovery, enterprise automation, physical AI and robotics as workload areas for their infrastructure; these are examples of intended uses, not evidence that each is already widespread or profitable.

Large jobs use connected systems, not isolated cards

Many GPUs can be combined, but simply adding cards is not the whole solution. A large job also depends on how GPUs communicate with one another, access memory and work with CPUs, networking and software. AWS and NVIDIA describe their infrastructure in those broader terms. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 results release also described Rubin as a six-chip platform and named AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure among expected early cloud deployers of Rubin-based instances. Those are company statements about product plans, not independent performance comparisons.

Why not use fewer GPUs?

There is no universal GPU count for an AI model. The number a job needs depends on the workload, model, software, memory capacity and bandwidth, GPU-to-GPU interconnect, and how effectively the system is used. A provider may also need capacity available for different customers and jobs at the same time.

Using fewer GPUs can mean a job takes longer or that less work can run concurrently; using more does not automatically make every job faster or cheaper. When comparing options, consider throughput and response time for the actual workload, software compatibility, energy and cooling needs, capacity availability, security and location. Compare the total cost of useful work rather than chip price alone. The available sources do not provide a neutral, controlled comparison that establishes one best cloud provider.

What do the headline GPU and revenue numbers mean?

Figure What it represents
$89.0 billion in Data Center revenue for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, up 117% year over year NVIDIA-reported quarterly business revenue, which the company attributed to the Blackwell Ultra infrastructure ramp. It is evidence about NVIDIA’s business, not a census of worldwide AI compute demand. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
$279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026, versus $119 billion the prior quarter NVIDIA said these commitments primarily cover memory and manufacturing facilities needed to produce products for long-term demand. They are not a count of GPUs shipped. NVIDIA Form 10-Q
2 million additional NVIDIA GPUs planned for AWS across 2027–2028 A future deployment plan announced by AWS and NVIDIA in 2026, identifying Blackwell Ultra, Rubin and Rubin Ultra. It does not mean that all 2 million are already installed or operating. AWS–NVIDIA announcement
$193.7 billion in full-year revenue NVIDIA’s reported total revenue for fiscal 2026, not revenue from AI GPUs alone. NVIDIA fiscal-results announcement

These numbers describe company revenue, commitments or a planned deployment—not interchangeable measures of GPUs installed, customer usage or total industry demand.

What limits how quickly cloud GPU capacity can grow?

Buying GPUs does not immediately create usable data-center capacity. NVIDIA’s July 2026 filing says customers may delay purchases if they lack infrastructure, capital or readiness to deploy a product. It identifies land, power, data-center shells and capital as crucial to building AI infrastructure, and describes expansion as a complex, multi-year process involving regulatory, technical and construction challenges. Power figures also need context. In a 2024 study, Latif and coauthors measured one eight-GPU NVIDIA H100 HGX node during selected ResNet and Llama 2-13B training workloads. They observed a maximum draw of about 8.4 kW, compared with a manufacturer-rated maximum of 10.2 kW for that node. Neither figure is a universal per-GPU value or a data-center total. Estimating facility demand would also require the number and type of systems, their workloads and utilization, other equipment, and facility overhead. Latif et al., 2024 study

The same study reported that, in its ResNet experiment, raising batch size from 512 to 4096 images produced a fourfold reduction in total energy, despite higher average power. That result applies to the tested experiment, not to all models or operating conditions. Latif et al., 2024 study

What cloud GPU announcements do—and do not—tell customers

A capacity announcement indicates a provider’s stated plans; it does not establish current availability, rates, or suitability for a particular workload. When choosing rented compute, check the workload fit, memory and interconnect, software support, location, security requirements, availability and total cost. The available announcements do not provide a controlled basis for ranking providers.

In the AWS–NVIDIA announcement, AWS CEO Matt Garman said: “Customers want the freedom to choose the best tools for their AI workloads, and they want confidence that everything works seamlessly together.” This is a vendor’s statement about choice and integration, not the result of an independent customer survey.
