A Wi-Fi outage does not automatically mean your computer’s wireless module is broken. The cause may be the device, its saved network settings or driver, the router or modem, or your internet provider. Check whether other devices can connect before changing drivers or arranging a repair; that simple comparison helps identify where to focus.
What “Wi-Fi module” can mean
The phrase may refer to a computer’s built-in wireless adapter, the software driver that lets the operating system use it, or—less precisely—the equipment that provides Wi-Fi, such as a router. A connection failure by itself cannot distinguish among these causes. The steps below cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs and Android phones. Menu names can vary by version, manufacturer, and language.

Start with the checks that are easy to undo
Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled
On a Windows PC, make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. Check that the expected network appears and that the device is connected to it. If the saved network or password may be out of date, forget the network and connect again with the current password. Android’s connect, disconnect, and forget options are described in Google’s Android Wi-Fi instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Restart networking equipment if the problem affects multiple devices
If several devices cannot connect, or the modem or router appears stuck, a restart may help. Microsoft’s general sequence is to unplug power from the router and modem, wait at least about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, wait for it to finish starting, and then reconnect the router. Equipment differs, so follow its manual if it gives a different procedure. Restarting the equipment temporarily disconnects everyone using that network. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

Find out whether the fault follows the device
Try the same Wi-Fi network on another phone or computer. If the other device connects, investigate the original device next. If it also fails, look at the router, modem, or internet service. You can also try the affected phone on a different Wi-Fi network; Google recommends this comparison for Pixel phones. On Windows, a working Ethernet connection can help point to a Wi-Fi-router problem. These tests narrow the possibilities but do not prove that a particular component has failed. Microsoft’s and Google’s guidance is available in their Windows troubleshooting and Pixel connection instructions.
Check the wireless adapter and driver in Windows
See whether Windows detects the adapter
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Look for the wireless adapter. Check whether it is present and enabled, and review its status for an error or warning.
- If Windows does not detect it, check the PC manufacturer’s support site for a driver for the exact computer model. Microsoft notes that the driver may need to be installed manually.
Use the computer maker’s instructions and driver rather than guessing from a similar model. If you plan to uninstall a driver, download a backup first when possible. Microsoft says Windows will look for and install a driver after a restart; the downloaded copy can be used if automatic installation does not work. The steps and cautions are in Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guide.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Consider recent driver or Windows changes
If the connection stopped working after a Windows update, check available updates and the computer maker’s support guidance. Rolling back or reinstalling a driver may be relevant, but use instructions for the exact PC and adapter rather than removing software at random.
Leave Network reset until later
Windows Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. It is a later step, not a first response: afterward, VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured again. Microsoft describes the reset and its effects in its Windows troubleshooting guide.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Try the Android checks on a phone
For Pixel phones, Google recommends checking Wi-Fi and Airplane mode, toggling them, restarting the phone, and testing the same network with another device. Android’s general guidance also covers resetting the internet connection and forgetting a saved network. Resetting the connection can end an active phone or video call. Options and menu labels differ among Android versions and manufacturers; see Google’s Pixel troubleshooting steps and its guides to Android internet problems and Wi-Fi networks.
Know when to seek repair—and when not to open the device
Consider model-specific manufacturer support or a qualified repair service if the device still cannot detect Wi-Fi hardware after supported software checks. Before treating the module as defective, establish whether the problem follows the device across networks and check the adapter and driver state. A replacement part cannot be specified reliably without the exact make and model.

Repair rules are product-specific. Google’s Nest Wifi Pro safety guide says: “Do not attempt to repair your Nest Wifi Pro yourself. Disassembling the device may cause injury or damage to your device.” It directs owners to customer service; this warning applies to that product and should not be generalized to every laptop or router.
When an external adapter is only a workaround
If a computer’s built-in wireless adapter is unavailable, a USB Wi-Fi adapter may provide a way to connect without repairing the internal module. It does not fix that module, and compatibility is not universal. Before choosing one, check the computer’s operating system and port, the adapter’s supported wireless bands or standards, and whether suitable drivers are available for the exact PC. Treat it as a temporary connection option unless a model-specific repair decision says otherwise; no particular adapter is established here as tested or suitable for every computer.
