RACV Renters Contents Insurance: What It Covers, What It Leaves Out

RACV Renters Insurance is contents insurance for renters, not cover for the landlord’s building. It may suit you if its insured events, limits and optional extras match the belongings and risks you need to protect—but the right choice depends on your Certificate of Insurance, excess and quote. RACV’s product information is Victoria-focused, so confirm availability and applicable documents for your location.

What does RACV renters insurance cover?

The policy is designed to insure a renter’s contents. RACV describes cover for loss or damage caused by up to 16 insured events, with examples including theft, fire and flood. The number of events is a product summary, not a guarantee that every incident involving one of those hazards is covered: the policy defines each event, its conditions and exclusions.

RACV also advertises liability cover of up to $20 million for claims against you and your family involving death, injury or property damage in Australia. The policy wording determines when liability cover applies; the headline limit does not mean every incident is covered or that cover applies worldwide.

Other features described by RACV include up to $500 for spoiled food and prescription medicine, and up to two weeks of contents cover during an Australian move, subject to the policy’s stated conditions. RACV’s explainer says the policy may also help with reasonable extra rent for up to a year if an insured event makes the rental home unliveable. Check the applicable wording for eligibility, limits and conditions for each benefit.

Does RACV renters insurance cover theft, flood or accidental damage?

Theft and other listed events

Theft is among the events RACV identifies as an example of cover. Whether a particular loss qualifies depends on the policy definition and circumstances. RACV’s claims guidance says a claim can be declined if the event is not covered, the insured type does not cover the loss, required information is missing, or there was no valid policy when the loss occurred.

Flood, storm and rainwater run-off

Do not assume that every water-related loss is treated the same way. RACV’s October 2023 supplementary wording applies a 72-hour timing condition to certain listed events, including flood, rainwater run-off, storm and storm surge. The applicable wording, any selected removal of flood-related cover and your certificate matter; check these before relying on cover for a specific address or event.

Accidental damage

Accidental damage is an optional add-on, not automatic cover. RACV gives knocking over a television as an example. Its claims guidance says a $300 excess applies to accidental-damage claims when this cover has been added; a special excess may also apply under the policy. Weigh the added premium against the belongings and risks you want covered.

Motor burnout

CHOICE’s feature summary lists optional motor-burnout cover for motors up to 15 years old. Confirm that this option is available for your quote and check the current RACV policy wording for the definition, age limit and conditions before treating it as covered.

Are my phone and laptop covered when I take them out?

RACV offers optional Portable Contents cover for belongings taken outside the home, including examples such as phones, cameras, laptops and jewellery. RACV’s product page states that each item is typically covered for up to $10,000 in Australia and New Zealand, or more if separately listed, and that the total limit outside those countries is up to $10,000. These are product-page limits, not a promise that every loss or location is covered: check the policy’s territory, triggers, conditions and any listing requirements.

If you mainly want protection for items used away from home, check whether the add-on covers the kinds of loss you are concerned about—such as accidental damage, loss or theft—and compare its premium and excess with the value of those items.

How are valuables and higher-value belongings limited?

RACV says $2,500 is included for each listed valuables category and offers an option to increase category cover. Its examples of categories include jewellery and watches, collections, music, games and movies, and art. A category limit is not necessarily the maximum available for a specifically listed item. If a belonging is worth more than the included limit, check the category definition and whether you need to list it or select increased cover.

RACV says it may request proof of ownership for lost, stolen or badly damaged contents. Keep receipts, payment statements, photos, packaging or a valuation certificate where available, especially for valuable items.

What is not covered by RACV renters insurance?

Contents insurance is not a substitute for cover on the landlord’s building or permanent fixtures. RACV gives examples of things or circumstances it does not cover, including:

  • Structures and fixtures belonging to the property.
  • Intentional loss or damage caused by the insured or someone allowed into the home.
  • Business stock and certain vehicles.
  • Wear, rust or gradual deterioration.

These are examples, not a complete exclusion list. The PDS and any applicable supplementary PDS set out the full terms. A claim can also fail if the policy was not active at the time, the event or type of cover does not apply, or required information is not provided.

How much contents insurance should I choose as a renter?

Estimate what it would cost to repair or replace your belongings at today’s prices, rather than relying on what you originally paid or assuming a landlord’s policy protects your possessions. RACV warns that underinsurance can leave you short. At the same time, a higher sum insured does not entitle you to more than the actual covered repair or replacement cost.

Use an inventory by room to reduce the chance of overlooking everyday items such as clothing, kitchen equipment, bedding and electronics. Then check the certificate for the selected sum insured, applicable item or category limits, and any optional covers. A high total sum insured cannot by itself resolve a lower sublimit on a particular category or item.

What excess will I pay if I make a claim?

RACV’s claims guidance lists basic excess choices from $100 to $5,000. The exact amount payable is the one shown on your Certificate of Insurance, and a special excess may apply. For a claim involving added accidental-damage cover, RACV says the $300 accidental-damage excess applies instead of the basic excess.

A higher excess may reduce the premium but means more out of pocket when you claim. If the likely repair or replacement cost is below the applicable excess, making a claim may not result in a payment. Consider the excess you could comfortably pay, not only the quoted premium.

How do RACV renters insurance claims work?

RACV says contents claims can be lodged online at any time or by phone. It may ask for receipts, payment statements, packaging, photos or a valuation certificate to establish ownership. Depending on the circumstances and policy terms, settlement may involve repair or restoration, replacement arranged through suppliers, store credit or cash. These are possible methods, not a guaranteed choice of settlement.

When assessing cover, keep the event, item, date and proof of ownership together. Follow RACV’s instructions for the claim and provide requested information; RACV identifies missing required information as one reason a claim might be declined.

How much does RACV renters insurance cost?

There is no single premium that establishes whether this policy is cheap or good value. RACV says the premium reflects personal circumstances and the insured property or items, and that renewal prices may change. Get a current quote for your address and household, then compare it with another renters contents policy using the same sum insured, optional covers and excess. A headline premium alone is not a like-for-like comparison.

Which RACV policy documents should renters check?

RACV’s policy-document index identifies the RACV Home Insurance Product Disclosure Statement and Policy Booklet – October 2023 for policies starting from 11 October 2023 or renewing effective from 13 November 2023. Renters should use the PDS sections referring to contents cover. The index separately identifies the Home Insurance Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide – January 2026 for policies starting from 29 January 2026 or renewing from 15 March 2026.

RACV’s PDS says the contract is made up of the current Certificate of Insurance, the PDS and any applicable Supplementary PDS. Check the certificate and supplementary documents that apply to your policy: they determine the selected sum insured, policy period, limits, excesses and options. RACV’s product page is Victoria-focused, so confirm the documents and availability for your location.

How should you compare RACV with another renters contents policy?

Compare policies on the terms that change what protection you actually receive, using quotes for the same address, household and contents value.

What to compare What to check
Insured events Definitions and restrictions for theft, flood, storm, water escape and accidental damage.
Limits Total contents sum insured, valuables category sublimits, portable-item caps and listing rules.
Excess Basic, accidental-damage and special excesses, including the amount payable for a likely claim.
Away-from-home cover Whether it is included or optional, what losses and territories apply, and per-item or total caps.
Claims and settlement Proof-of-ownership expectations and whether repair, replacement or cash settlement may apply.
Price Quotes matched for address, household, contents value, options and excess.

CHOICE provides an independent feature summary of RACV, which can help identify features to investigate. Use it as a comparison aid rather than a substitute for the current RACV documents and your own quote.

Is RACV renters insurance worth considering?

It is worth considering if you rent in an area where the policy is available and its event definitions, limits, options and excess fit your needs. The central trade-off is that core contents cover does not automatically include every protection a renter may want: portable contents and accidental damage are optional, category limits can matter for valuables, and the premium is individualized. Review the applicable certificate and policy wording, then compare a matched quote before deciding.
